A Tutte polynomial inequality for lattice path matroids
Let be a matroid without loops or coloops and let be its Tutte
polynomial. In 1999 Merino and Welsh conjectured that holds for graphic matroids. Ten years later, Conde and
Merino proposed a multiplicative version of the conjecture which implies the
original one. In this paper we prove the multiplicative conjecture for the
family of lattice path matroids (generalizing earlier results on uniform and
Catalan matroids). In order to do this, we introduce and study particular
lattice path matroids, called snakes, used as building bricks to indeed
establish a strengthening of the multiplicative conjecture as well as a
complete characterization of the cases in which equality holds.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, improved exposition/minor correction
Matroids arising from electrical networks
This paper introduces Dirichlet matroids, a generalization of graphic
matroids arising from electrical networks. We present four main results. First,
we exhibit a matroid quotient formed by the dual of a network embedded in a
surface with boundary and the dual of the associated Dirichlet matroid. This
generalizes an analogous result for graphic matroids of cellularly embedded
graphs. Second, we characterize the Bergman fans of Dirichlet matroids as
explicit subfans of graphic Bergman fans. In doing so, we generalize the
connection between Bergman fans of complete graphs and phylogenetic trees.
Third, we use the half-plane property of Dirichlet matroids to prove an
interlacing result on the real zeros and poles of the trace of the response
matrix. And fourth, we bound the coefficients of the precoloring polynomial of
a network by the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial of the underlying
graph.Comment: 27 pages, 14 figure
Hopf algebras for matroids over hyperfields
Recently, M.~Baker and N.~Bowler introduced the notion of matroids over hyperfields as a unifying theory of various generalizations of matroids. In this paper we generalize the notion of minors and direct sums from ordinary matroids to matroids over hyperfields. Using this we generalize the classical construction of matroid-minor Hopf algebras to the case of matroids over hyperfields
There are 174 Subdivisions of the Hexahedron into Tetrahedra
This article answers an important theoretical question: How many different
subdivisions of the hexahedron into tetrahedra are there? It is well known that
the cube has five subdivisions into 6 tetrahedra and one subdivision into 5
tetrahedra. However, all hexahedra are not cubes and moving the vertex
positions increases the number of subdivisions. Recent hexahedral dominant
meshing methods try to take these configurations into account for combining
tetrahedra into hexahedra, but fail to enumerate them all: they use only a set
of 10 subdivisions among the 174 we found in this article.
The enumeration of these 174 subdivisions of the hexahedron into tetrahedra
is our combinatorial result. Each of the 174 subdivisions has between 5 and 15
tetrahedra and is actually a class of 2 to 48 equivalent instances which are
identical up to vertex relabeling. We further show that exactly 171 of these
subdivisions have a geometrical realization, i.e. there exist coordinates of
the eight hexahedron vertices in a three-dimensional space such that the
geometrical tetrahedral mesh is valid. We exhibit the tetrahedral meshes for
these configurations and show in particular subdivisions of hexahedra with 15
tetrahedra that have a strictly positive Jacobian
