Logic in the Torah is a ‘thematic compilation’ by Avi Sion. It collects in one volume essays that he has written on this subject in Judaic Logic (1995) and A Fortiori Logic (2013), in which traces of logic in the Torah and related religious documents (the Nakh, the Christian Bible, and the Koran and Hadiths) are identified and analyzed

    Kinetic energy harvesting

    No full text
This paper reviews kinetic energy harvesting as a potential localised power supply for wireless applications. Harvesting devices are typically implemented as resonant devices of which the power output depends upon the size of the inertial mass, the frequency and amplitude of the driving vibrations, the maximum available mass displacement and the damping. Three transduction mechanisms are currently primarily employed to convert mechanical into electrical energy: electromagnetic, piezoelectric and electrostatic. Piezoelectric and electrostatic mechanisms are best suited to small size MEMS implementations, but the power output from such devices is at present limited to a few microwatts. An electromagnetic generator implemented with discrete components has produced a power 120 ?W with the highest recorded efficiency to date of 51% for a device of this size reported to date. The packaged device is 0.8 cm3 and weighs 1.6 grams. The suitability of the technology in space applications will be determined by the nature of the available kinetic energy and the required level of output power. A radioactively coupled device may present an opportunity where suitable vibrations do not exist

Wisdom and Torah: with special reference to the wisdom psalms

    Get PDF
The early Hebrew wisdom was expounded by the parents, teachers, and priests in the family and temples. Its content was utilitarian and concerned with the worldly life, yet its distinctive nature was the fear of Yahweh which is found in JE stories, Proverbs, the Deuteronomic writings. As to the pre-exilic Torah, in Proverbs it means the instruction given by parents/teachers, and in the Tetrateuch and the early prophets the instruction given by the priests and the prophets. As the Book of Proverbs contains an instructional form of Torah drawn from individual experience, the Deuteronomic history is another from of it based on a collective experience. In the exilic and post-exilic period the priestly Torah-giving was gradually replaced by the scribal Torah-studying/teaching. In Ben Sira the Torah became the book of life that contains all the wisdom from the past.In the wisdom psalms the Torah is identified with wisdom: the "Torah" as God's wisdom and human "wisdom" as man's fear of Yahweh. Ps 1 testifies to the Torah as the source of life, health, growth, and fruit. Ps 19 confesses it as trustworthy or sufficient to bring salvation and joy. Ps 119 praises it as promise, salvation, mercy, as well as the way or the truth for life. The Torah was never a static rigid code of law, but the living address of God that emanates light and holiness. The essential force of the Torah is to make man hope in God. The Torah is the gift of God, the living force to guide the people

This study aimed to determine the definition, meaning, and classification of Torah according to Judaism. Accordingly, this study used a descriptive analysis method through a qualitative approach with literature studies to sufficiently understand the intended research purpose. This study concluded that Torah is Jews guideline of life, containing divine laws taught to Moses and transmitted to further generations. Torah, in detail, encompasses five books: Bereshit, Shemot, Vayiqra, Bemidbar, and Devarim. The Ramifications of \u3cem\u3eWisconsin v. Yoder\u3c/em\u3e: Six Foundational Problems with a 50-Year Old Landmark Case

My essay introduces the 1972 United States Supreme Court case Wisconsin v. Yoder to readers who don’t come from a legal background who want to understand the negative ramifications of the case and how it affects their individual rights. Yoder says that children of practicing Amish don’t have a right to any education and future other than one inside the Amish Church. My essay deconstructs the case from the perspective of an Amish American woman— yours truly — who escaped in the middle of the night at age 15 because of how this ruling has shaped the Amish people. I wanted to go to high school, and Yoder was cited in my emancipation hearing post-escape for why I had to be on my own if I wanted an education past the eighth grade. If I waited until I was 18 to escape, I would’ve been prevented or discouraged from enrolling in high school and advised or required to attend an alternative program for juvenile delinquents or, at best, adult education.
