The Private Foundation\u27s Topsy Turvy Road in the American Political Process

    Get PDF
This article studies this American political debate on the charitable tax exemption from 1864 to 1969, in particular, the debate regarding philanthropic, private foundations. The article\u27s premise is that the debate\u27s core has little evolved since that between the 1850s and 1870s. To create perspective, a short brief of the modern economic significance of the foundation sector follows. Thereafter, the article begins with a review of the preand post-colonial attitudes toward charitable institutions leading up to the 1800s debates, illustrating the incongruity of American policy regarding whether and to what extent to grant charities tax exemption. The 1800s state debates are referenced and correlated to parts of the 1900s federal debate to show the similarity if not sameness of the arguments against and justifications for exemption. The twentieth century legislative examination primarily focuses upon the regulatory evolution for foundations. Finally, the article concludes with a brief discussion of the 1969 tax reform\u27s changes to the foundation rules and the significant twentieth century legislation regulating both public and private foundations

Brown study an original musical recording

For a year and a spring semester, I have been in the works of a school music project. I set out to make a record of ten self-penned songs. Along the length of the project, I would discover musicians and recording artists. I notated my songs on a staff and recorded demos to assist players of drums, electric bass, French horn, and violin. I play guitar, percussion, synthesized instruments, and do all of the singing on Brown Study, the record\u27s title. The technology used to create the songs include a Tascam 2488 (home digital recording device), computers, printers, cell phones and i-phones, amplifiers, microphones and headphones, and a drum machine. This is my first attempt at collaborating with other musicians. At the defense I will be presenting 4 songs: Runaway, Lonely Heart, Topsy Turvy, and Friendliest Advice. Each song has a particular history and story to tell containing influences and aesthetic philosophies. My gift is to be shared with whoever will listen upon completing and distributing the full-length album

    Engineering: Design & Build

    Get PDF
Engineering: Design & Build focuses on investigating engineering. Student led teams conceptualize, build, test and acquire knowledge while becoming familiar with the engineering design process. Using an open-ended inquiry approach students are able to foster their creativity. Students learn to apply multiple skills and develop the habits of innovators. Students are encouraged to think about needs, requirements, and alternatives as they progress throughout the curriculum. Additionally, students consider materials, energy, inputs and outputs. Unit lessons combine generative, analytical, synthesis, and evaluative thinking to allow students to finalize their design choice and initiate construction

    NeverEnding Loop

    Get PDF
The intention of NeverEnding Loop is to depict the trauma of queer adolescense contrasted by the shadow of the closet that follows LGBTQ+ children into adulthood. The reality for queer people is that coming out is a process that never ends and a task that can create a lonely existence for those that are different from the norm. The artwork aims to convey the very real and confusing struggle of finding your identity as a queer person existing in a heterosexual world. NeverEnding Loop explores loops and cycles in short animations, sculptural forms with repeating imagery, and mixed media forms that require interaction from the audience. By placing animated loops, interactive sculptures, and miniature environments together in the gallery, I hope to entice and overwhelm the viewer, so that they might begin to feel a fraction of what life is like for a queer child
