Matroidal approaches to rough sets via closure operators

AbstractThis paper studies rough sets from the operator-oriented view by matroidal approaches. We firstly investigate some kinds of closure operators and conclude that the Pawlak upper approximation operator is just a topological and matroidal closure operator. Then we characterize the Pawlak upper approximation operator in terms of the closure operator in Pawlak matroids, which are first defined in this paper, and are generalized to fundamental matroids when partitions are generalized to coverings. A new covering-based rough set model is then proposed based on fundamental matroids and properties of this model are studied. Lastly, we refer to the abstract approximation space, whose original definition is modified to get a one-to-one correspondence between closure systems (operators) and concrete models of abstract approximation spaces. We finally examine the relations of four kinds of abstract approximation spaces, which correspond exactly to the relations of closure systems

© 2014 Elsevier B.V. Both rough and fuzzy set theories offer interesting tools for dealing with imperfect data: while the former allows us to work with uncertain and incomplete information, the latter provides a formal setting for vague concepts. The two theories are highly compatible, and since the late 1980s many researchers have studied their hybridization. In this paper, we critically evaluate most relevant fuzzy rough set models proposed in the literature. To this end, we establish a formally correct and unified mathematical framework for them. Both implicator-conjunctor-based definitions and noise-tolerant models are studied. We evaluate these models on two different fronts: firstly, we discuss which properties of the original rough set model can be maintained and secondly, we examine how robust they are against both class and attribute noise. By highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of the different fuzzy rough set models, this study appears a necessary first step to propose and develop new models in future research.Lynn D’eer has been supported by the Ghent University Special Research Fund, Chris Cornelis was partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology under the project TIN2011-28488 and the Andalusian Research Plans P11-TIC-7765 and P10-TIC-6858, and by project PYR-2014-8 of the Genil Program of CEI BioTic GRANADA and Lluis Godo has been partially supported by the Spanish MINECO project EdeTRI TIN2012-39348-C02-01Peer Reviewe

Cluster soft sets and cluster soft topologies

The cluster soft point is an attempt to introduce a novel generalization of the soft closure point and the soft limit point. A cluster soft set is defined to be the system of all cluster soft points of a soft set. Then the fundamental properties of cluster soft sets are demonstrated. Moreover, the concept of a cluster soft topology on a universal set is introduced with regard to the cluster soft sets. The cluster soft topology is derived from a soft topology with an associated soft ideal, but it is finer than the original soft topology. On the other hand, if we start constructing the cluster soft topology from another cluster soft topology, we will end up with the first cluster soft topology we started with. The implication of cluster soft topologies is highlighted using some examples. Eventually, we represent the cluster soft closed sets in terms of several forms of soft sets
