Topological Self-Stabilization with Name-Passing Process Calculi
Topological self-stabilization is the ability of a distributed system to have its nodes themselves establish a meaningful overlay network. Independent from the initial network topology, it converges to the desired topology via forwarding, inserting, and deleting links to neighboring nodes.
We adapt a linearization algorithm, originally designed for a shared memory model, to asynchronous message-passing. We use an extended localized pi-calculus to model the algorithm and to formally prove its essential self-stabilization properties: closure and weak convergence for every arbitrary initial configuration, and strong convergence for restricted cases
Frontiers of Membrane Computing: Open Problems and Research Topics
This is a list of open problems and research topics collected after the Twelfth
Conference on Membrane Computing, CMC 2012 (Fontainebleau, France (23 - 26 August
2011), meant initially to be a working material for Tenth Brainstorming Week on
Membrane Computing, Sevilla, Spain (January 30 - February 3, 2012). The result was
circulated in several versions before the brainstorming and then modified according to
the discussions held in Sevilla and according to the progresses made during the meeting.
In the present form, the list gives an image about key research directions currently active
in membrane computing
The Quantum Monadology
The modern theory of functional programming languages uses monads for
encoding computational side-effects and side-contexts, beyond bare-bone program
logic. Even though quantum computing is intrinsically side-effectful (as in
quantum measurement) and context-dependent (as on mixed ancillary states),
little of this monadic paradigm has previously been brought to bear on quantum
programming languages.
Here we systematically analyze the (co)monads on categories of parameterized
module spectra which are induced by Grothendieck's "motivic yoga of operations"
-- for the present purpose specialized to HC-modules and further to set-indexed
complex vector spaces. Interpreting an indexed vector space as a collection of
alternative possible quantum state spaces parameterized by quantum measurement
results, as familiar from Proto-Quipper-semantics, we find that these
(co)monads provide a comprehensive natural language for functional quantum
programming with classical control and with "dynamic lifting" of quantum
measurement results back into classical contexts.
We close by indicating a domain-specific quantum programming language (QS)
expressing these monadic quantum effects in transparent do-notation, embeddable
into the recently constructed Linear Homotopy Type Theory (LHoTT) which
interprets into parameterized module spectra. Once embedded into LHoTT, this
should make for formally verifiable universal quantum programming with linear
quantum types, classical control, dynamic lifting, and notably also with

Field-based Coordination with the Share Operator
Field-based coordination has been proposed as a model for coordinating
collective adaptive systems, promoting a view of distributed computations as
functions manipulating data structures spread over space and evolving over
time, called computational fields. The field calculus is a formal foundation
for field computations, providing specific constructs for evolution (time) and
neighbor interaction (space), which are handled by separate operators (called
rep and nbr, respectively). This approach, however, intrinsically limits the
speed of information propagation that can be achieved by their combined use. In
this paper, we propose a new field-based coordination operator called share,
which captures the space-time nature of field computations in a single operator
that declaratively achieves: (i) observation of neighbors' values; (ii)
reduction to a single local value; and (iii) update and converse sharing to
neighbors of a local variable. We show that for an important class of
self-stabilising computations, share can replace all occurrences of rep and nbr
constructs. In addition to conceptual economy, use of the share operator also
allows many prior field calculus algorithms to be greatly accelerated, which we
validate empirically with simulations of frequently used network propagation
and collection algorithms
Toward a formal theory for computing machines made out of whatever physics offers: extended version
Approaching limitations of digital computing technologies have spurred
research in neuromorphic and other unconventional approaches to computing. Here
we argue that if we want to systematically engineer computing systems that are
based on unconventional physical effects, we need guidance from a formal theory
that is different from the symbolic-algorithmic theory of today's computer
science textbooks. We propose a general strategy for developing such a theory,
and within that general view, a specific approach that we call "fluent
computing". In contrast to Turing, who modeled computing processes from a
top-down perspective as symbolic reasoning, we adopt the scientific paradigm of
physics and model physical computing systems bottom-up by formalizing what can
ultimately be measured in any physical substrate. This leads to an
understanding of computing as the structuring of processes, while classical

Engineering Self-Adaptive Collective Processes for Cyber-Physical Ecosystems
The pervasiveness of computing and networking is creating significant opportunities for building valuable socio-technical systems. However, the scale, density, heterogeneity, interdependence, and QoS constraints of many target systems pose severe operational and engineering challenges. Beyond individual smart devices, cyber-physical collectives can provide services or solve complex problems by leveraging a “system effect” while coordinating and adapting to context or environment change. Understanding and building systems exhibiting collective intelligence and autonomic capabilities represent a prominent research goal, partly covered, e.g., by the field of collective adaptive systems. Therefore, drawing inspiration from and building on the long-time research activity on coordination, multi-agent systems, autonomic/self-* systems, spatial computing, and especially on the recent aggregate computing paradigm, this thesis investigates concepts, methods, and tools for the engineering of possibly large-scale, heterogeneous ensembles of situated components that should be able to operate, adapt and self-organise in a decentralised fashion. The primary contribution of this thesis consists of four main parts. First, we define and implement an aggregate programming language (ScaFi), internal to the mainstream Scala programming language, for describing collective adaptive behaviour, based on field calculi. Second, we conceive of a “dynamic collective computation” abstraction, also called aggregate process, formalised by an extension to the field calculus, and implemented in ScaFi. Third, we characterise and provide a proof-of-concept implementation of a middleware for aggregate computing that enables the development of aggregate systems according to multiple architectural styles. Fourth, we apply and evaluate aggregate computing techniques to edge computing scenarios, and characterise a design pattern, called Self-organising Coordination Regions (SCR), that supports adjustable, decentralised decision-making and activity in dynamic environments.Con lo sviluppo di informatica e intelligenza artificiale, la diffusione pervasiva di device computazionali e la crescente interconnessione tra elementi fisici e digitali, emergono innumerevoli opportunità per la costruzione di sistemi socio-tecnici di nuova generazione. Tuttavia, l'ingegneria di tali sistemi presenta notevoli sfide, data la loro complessità —si pensi ai livelli, scale, eterogeneità , e interdipendenze coinvolti. Oltre a dispositivi smart individuali, collettivi cyber-fisici possono fornire servizi o risolvere problemi complessi con un “effetto sistema” che emerge dalla coordinazione e l'adattamento di componenti fra loro, l'ambiente e il contesto. Comprendere e costruire sistemi in grado di esibire intelligenza collettiva e capacità autonomiche è un importante problema di ricerca studiato, ad esempio, nel campo dei sistemi collettivi adattativi. Perciò, traendo ispirazione e partendo dall'attività di ricerca su coordinazione, sistemi multiagente e self-*, modelli di computazione spazio-temporali e, specialmente, sul recente paradigma di programmazione aggregata, questa tesi tratta concetti, metodi, e strumenti per l'ingegneria di
ensemble di elementi situati eterogenei che devono essere in grado di lavorare, adattarsi, e auto-organizzarsi in modo decentralizzato. Il contributo di questa tesi consiste in quattro parti principali. In primo luogo, viene definito e implementato un linguaggio di programmazione aggregata (ScaFi), interno al linguaggio Scala, per descrivere comportamenti collettivi e adattativi secondo l'approccio dei campi computazionali. In secondo luogo, si propone e caratterizza l'astrazione di processo aggregato per rappresentare computazioni collettive dinamiche concorrenti, formalizzata come estensione al field calculus e implementata in ScaFi. Inoltre, si analizza e implementa un prototipo di middleware per sistemi aggregati, in grado di supportare piĂą stili architetturali. Infine, si applicano e valutano tecniche di programmazione aggregata in scenari di edge computing, e si propone un pattern, Self-Organising Coordination Regions, per supportare, in modo decentralizzato, attivitĂ decisionali e di regolazione in ambienti dinamici
