Educing coherent eddy structures in air curtain systems
The work reported here comes within a broader research program dealing with ambiance
separation or confining by means of air curtains (plane air jets). The process is studied
experimentally by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). In this paper, the emphasis is put on the
flow structure in the impingement region of such jet systems insofar as it is where transfers
occur preferentially. More precisely, a vortex eduction method was implemented under the
Matlab environment enabling both the automatic detection of 2D coherent patterns embedded
in PIV velocity vector maps, and a statistical analysis of the topological and energy features
of these structures. First, the approach is explained in detail. The second part of this paper is
devoted to its application in the case of plane turbulent impinging simple- and twin-jets for
various jet exit velocities. Results about the size, the shape, the spatial distribution and the
energy content of the detected vortices are provided. Although many questions still remain
open, new insights into the fashion these structures might form, organize and evolve are
given providing an original picture of the plane turbulent impinging jet
On the role of domain-specific knowledge in the visualization of technical flows
In this paper, we present an overview of a number of existing flow visualization methods, developed by the authors in the recent past, that are specifically aimed at integrating and leveraging domain-specific knowledge into the visualization process. These methods transcend the traditional divide between interactive exploration and featurebased schemes and allow a visualization user to benefit from the abstraction properties of feature extraction and topological methods while retaining intuitive and interactive control over the visual analysis process, as we demonstrate on a number of examples
Visualization of intricate flow structures for vortex breakdown analysis
Journal ArticleVortex breakdowns and flow recirculation are essential phenomena in aeronautics where they appear as a limiting factor in the design of modern aircrafts. Because of the inherent intricacy of these features, standard flow visualization techniques typically yield cluttered depictions. The paper addresses the challenges raised by the visual exploration and validation of two CFD simulations involving vortex breakdown. To permit accurate and insightful visualization we propose a new approach that unfolds the geometry of the breakdown region by letting a plane travel through the structure along a curve. We track the continuous evolution of the associated projected vector field using the theoretical framework of parametric topology. To improve the understanding of the spatial relationship between the resulting curves and lines we use direct volume rendering and multi-dimensional transfer functions for the display of flow-derived scalar quantities. This enriches the visualization and provides an intuitive context for the extracted topological information. Our results offer clear, synthetic depictions that permit new insight into the structural properties of vortex breakdowns
Automatic eduction and statistical analysis of coherent structures in the wall region of a confine plane
This paper describes a vortex detection algorithm used to expose and statistically characterize the
coherent flow patterns observable in the velocity vector fields measured by Particle Image
Velocimetry (PIV) in the impingement region of air curtains. The philosophy and the architecture of
this algorithm are presented. Its strengths and weaknesses are discussed. The results of a
parametrical analysis performed to assess the variability of the response of our algorithm to the 3
user-specified parameters in our eduction scheme are reviewed. The technique is illustrated in the
case of a plane turbulent impinging twin-jet with an opening ratio of 10. The corresponding jet
Reynolds number, based on the initial mean flow velocity U0 and the jet width e, is 14000. The
results of a statistical analysis of the size, shape, spatial distribution and energetic content of the
coherent eddy structures detected in the impingement region of this test flow are provided.

On Lagrangian and vortex-surface fields for flows with Taylor–Green and Kida–Pelz initial conditions
For a strictly inviscid barotropic flow with conservative body forces, the Helmholtz vorticity theorem shows that material or Lagrangian surfaces which are vortex surfaces at time t = 0 remain so for t > 0. In this study, a systematic methodology is developed for constructing smooth scalar fields φ(x, y, z, t = 0) for Taylor–Green and Kida–Pelz velocity fields, which, at t = 0, satisfy ω·∇φ = 0. We refer to such fields as vortex-surface fields. Then, for some constant C, iso-surfaces φ = C define vortex surfaces. It is shown that, given the vorticity, our definition of a vortex-surface field admits non-uniqueness, and this is presently resolved numerically using an optimization approach. Additionally, relations between vortex-surface fields and the classical Clebsch representation are discussed for flows with zero helicity. Equations describing the evolution of vortex-surface fields are then obtained for both inviscid and viscous incompressible flows. Both uniqueness and the distinction separating the evolution of vortex-surface fields and Lagrangian fields are discussed. By tracking φ as a Lagrangian field in slightly viscous flows, we show that the well-defined evolution of Lagrangian surfaces that are initially vortex surfaces can be a good approximation to vortex surfaces at later times prior to vortex reconnection. In the evolution of such Lagrangian fields, we observe that initially blob-like vortex surfaces are progressively stretched to sheet-like shapes so that neighbouring portions approach each other, with subsequent rolling up of structures near the interface, which reveals more information on dynamics than the iso-surfaces of vorticity magnitude. The non-local geometry in the evolution is quantified by two differential geometry properties. Rolled-up local shapes are found in the Lagrangian structures that were initially vortex surfaces close to the time of vortex reconnection. It is hypothesized that this is related to the formation of the very high vorticity regions
Extraction and Visualization of Swirl and Tumble Motion from Engine Simulation Data
