    Knowledge intensive industries, networks, and collective learning

    Knowledge has become a key source of competitiveness for advanced regions and nations, indicating a transformation of capitalism towards “knowledge-driven economies“. Know ledge intensive sectors in production and in services have a lead in this respect, they can be considered as role models for the future. The innovation process, the mechanisms of knowledge exchange and the respective linkages in those industries differ quite markedly from those in other sectors. Clustering and local knowledge spillovers are frequently stated phenomena, although it is still unclear to what extent regional networks and collective learning are indeed relevant and what the mechanisms of knowledge flows are. The aim of the paper is to examine in a differentiated way the character of the innovation process and the ype of interactions in those industries, in order to find out how strongly they are related to regional, national and international innovation systems. We will analyse the relevant types of actors, the respective mechanisms of knowledge exchange and the importance of collective learning and innovation. The paper will discuss relevant theoretical concepts and available evidence and it will be based on an empirical analysis for Austria. The data base is a recent firm survey which was carried out in the year 2003. From this analysis conclusions regarding the role of regional and other innovation systems for the development of knowledge-based industries will be drawn.

    Strategic alignment: a performance tool (an empirical study of SMEs).

    The purpose of this research is to investigate whether the alignment of IT with the strategy (particularly the partnership strategy or cooperation practice) and organizational structure of an SME could have a decisive influence on its performance. We constructed a model and tested it empirically using data from 381 SMEs operating in different sectors. A multivariate perspective, modelled with structural equations, was used to test the alignment between strategy, structure and IT. The alignment is considered as a covariation of a set of theoretically related variables. The results indicate that the alignment of IT with corporate strategy and organizational structure could generate the best performance levels for an SME.strategy; performance; IT; SME; Strategic alignment; organizational structure;

    Textile Prototyping Lab - A Platform and Open Laboratory for the Promotion of Open Innovation and Networking between Research, Design and Industry

    This paper introduces and discusses the Textile Prototyping Lab (hereinafter referred to as 'TPL'), which is a joint research project in its early stages of five organisations from the fields of textiles, electronic research, design and economics. It comprises the concept, design, installation and testing of a textile prototyping laboratory that is more open, flexible and interdisciplinary than other textile-related laboratories known to date. The core topic of the project is Open Innovation, which means research and development is conducted within the new context of sharing resources and results amongst the directly involved actors and the interested community consisting of industry, individual professionals and students. Thus the research and development activities relevant to the individual parties involved in this project are conducted jointly and made available beyond their own organisational boundaries. The concept is implemented by five partners with a sound expertise in their respective fields of action: The Saxon Textile Research Institute (STFI) and the Textile Research Institute Thuringia-Vogtland (TITV Greiz) - two leading German textile research institutes - are contributing their expertise in textile process chains, lightweight construction and Smart Textiles to the project. The Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) supports the lab in the field of microelectronic integration into textile structures, but Fab Lab Berlin - with their expertise related to Open Innovation processes. weißensee academy of art berlin serves as the network coordinator and contributes its knowledge in textile design, design education and design research. This research project is part of futureTEX, an interdisciplinary competence network in which industry, scientific institutions and associations work together to actively shape the future of the German textile industry, fostering new interdisciplinary ideas, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germany. The infrastructure of TPL consists of a digitally supported central prototyping lab located at the weißensee academy of art berlin, supplemented by highly specialised facilities and 'focus labs‘ located at the partner institutes. A specifically developed software connects the different facilities and supports lean development processes. Additionally an extensive material library embodies and represents the textile expertise and serves as an analogue resource of references, information and inspiration in order to communicate the competence fields and technological possibilities of TPL. TPL connects different stakeholders from the textile sector and beyond promoting exchange among these. Diverse actors benefit from the competences of the TPL infrastructure and its network. The processes are adapted to serve different user types (e.g. industry, SMEs, start-ups, designers, engineers, developers, free-lancers, students). Thus TPL is an open and agile place where interdisciplinary practices and interests meet to foster quick and effective innovation processes within the extended field of textiles

They are regarded as an essential tool to stimulate growth and enable firms to master the competition brought about by the forces of globalization. In developed countries they are thought to provide a vital buffer against challenges from low-cost producers from emerging countries. At the same time, innovations in today's globalized world are hardly feasible in isolation. World-wide economic reforms and far-reaching technological advancements have brought to fore new economic powerhouses, such as China and India, which possess strong scientific capabilities. Products are marketed internationally which often necessitates adaptation to specific needs of targeted markets. All these developments are leading to the globalization of innovation.     Machine Learning in SME: An Empirical Study on Enablers and Success Factors

    Machine learning (ML) techniques are rapidly evolving, both in academia and practice. However, enterprises show different maturity levels in successfully implementing ML techniques. Thus, we review the state of adoption of ML in enterprises. We find that ML technologies are being increasingly adopted in enterprises, but that small and medium-size enterprises (SME) are struggling with the introduction in comparison to larger enterprises. In order to identify enablers and success factors we conduct a qualitative empirical study with 18 companies in different industries. The results show that especially SME fail to apply ML technologies due to insufficient ML knowhow. However, partners and appropriate tools can compensate this lack of resources.     Analytical Hierarchy Process Approach on Regional Product Competitiveness in Magelang, Central Java

    This study aims to identify and analyze the data and information to determine the local featured products through the aspects of value-added, market expansion and production technology. The location is the town of Magelang in which there are many small and medium industries with a wide range of their products. The analytical tools used include common analytical technique used to determine a featured product. They are scoring, value chain and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The result of the study shows that the main criteria for weighting the featured products are competitive advantage, stakeholders' acceptance and societal benefits. Through all three criteria, there are three main local featured products becoming the. They are getuk (the result of processed cassava), kerupuk tahu (tofu crackers) and ceriping ketela (cassava crackers). Furthermore, through a comparative analysis of the criteria, it can be concluded that the product getuk can be considered as the Regional Industry Core Competence based featured product from Magelang.Keywords: Analytical Hierarchy Proces, Regional Product, Competitivenes
