    To Adapt or Not to Adapt – Consequences of Adapting Driver and Traffic Light Agents

    One way to cope with the increasing traffic demand is to integrate standard solutions with more intelligent control measures. However, the result of possible interferences between intelligent control or information provision tools and other components of the overall traffic system is not easily predictable. This paper discusses the effects of integrating co-adaptive decision-making regarding route choices (by drivers) and control measures (by traffic lights). The motivation behind this is that optimization of traffic light control is starting to be integrated with navigation support for drivers. We use microscopic, agent-based modelling and simulation, in opposition to the classical network analysis, as this work focuses on the effect of local adaptation. In a scenario that exhibits features comparable to real-world networks, we evaluate different types of adaptation by drivers and by traffic lights, based on local perceptions. In order to compare the performance, we have also used a global level optimization method based on genetic algorithms

    Self-Organization Promotes the Evolution of Cooperation with Cultural Propagation

    In this paper three computational models for the study of the evolution of cooperation under cultural propagation are studied: Kin Selection, Direct Reciprocity and Indirect Reciprocity. Two analyzes are reported, one comparing their behavior between them and a second one identifying the impact that different parameters have in the model dynamics. The results of these analyzes illustrate how game transitions may occur depending of some parameters within the models and also explain how agents adapt to these transitions by individually choosing their attachment to a cooperative attitude. These parameters regulate how cooperation can self-organize under different circumstances. The emergence of the evolution of cooperation as a result of the agent's adapting processes is also discussed

    ’Eyes free’ in-car assistance: parent and child passenger collaboration during phone calls

    This paper examines routine family car journeys, looking specifically at how passengers assist during a mobile telephone call while the drivers address the competing demands of handling the vehicle, interacting with various artefacts and controls in the cabin, and engage in co-located and remote conversations while navigating through busy city roads. Based on an analysis of video fragments, we see how drivers and child passengers form their conversations and requests around the call so as to be meaningful and paced to the demands, knowledge and abilities of their cooccupants, and how the conditions of the road and emergent traffic are oriented to and negotiated in the context of the social interaction that they exist alongside. The study provides implications for the design of car-based collaborative media and considers how hands- and eyesfree natural interfaces could be tailored to the complexity of activities in the car and on the road

    Federated Robust Embedded Systems: Concepts and Challenges

    The development within the area of embedded systems (ESs) is moving rapidly, not least due to falling costs of computation and communication equipment. It is believed that increased communication opportunities will lead to the future ESs no longer being parts of isolated products, but rather parts of larger communities or federations of ESs, within which information is exchanged for the benefit of all participants. This vision is asserted by a number of interrelated research topics, such as the internet of things, cyber-physical systems, systems of systems, and multi-agent systems. In this work, the focus is primarily on ESs, with their specific real-time and safety requirements. While the vision of interconnected ESs is quite promising, it also brings great challenges to the development of future systems in an efficient, safe, and reliable way. In this work, a pre-study has been carried out in order to gain a better understanding about common concepts and challenges that naturally arise in federations of ESs. The work was organized around a series of workshops, with contributions from both academic participants and industrial partners with a strong experience in ES development. During the workshops, a portfolio of possible ES federation scenarios was collected, and a number of application examples were discussed more thoroughly on different abstraction levels, starting from screening the nature of interactions on the federation level and proceeding down to the implementation details within each ES. These discussions led to a better understanding of what can be expected in the future federated ESs. In this report, the discussed applications are summarized, together with their characteristics, challenges, and necessary solution elements, providing a ground for the future research within the area of communicating ESs

    Affective automotive user interfaces

    Technological progress in the fields of ubiquitous sensing and machine learning has been fueling the development of user-aware human-computer interaction in recent years. Especially natural user interfaces, like digital voice assistants, can benefit from understanding their users in order to provide a more naturalistic experience. Such systems can, for example, detect the emotional state of users and accordingly act in an empathic way. One major research field working on this topic is Affective Computing, where psycho-physiological measures, speech input, and facial expressions are used to sense human emotions. Affective data allows natural user interfaces to respond to emotions, providing promising perspectives not only for user experience design but also for safety aspects. In automotive environments, informed estimations of the driver’s state can potentially avoid dangerous errors and evoking positive emotions can improve the experience of driving. This dissertation explores Affective Automotive User Interfaces using two basic interaction paradigms: firstly, emotion regulation systems react to the current emotional state of the user based on live sensing data, allowing for quick interventions. Secondly, emotional interaction synthesizes experiences which resonate with the user on an emotional level. The constituted goals of these two interaction approaches are the promotion of safe behavior and an improvement of user experience. Promoting safe behavior through emotion regulation: Systems which detect and react to the driver’s state are expected to have great potential for improving road safety. This work presents a model and methods needed to investigate such systems and an exploration of several approaches to keep the driver in a safe state. The presented methods include techniques to induce emotions and to sample the emotional state of drivers. Three driving simulator studies investigate the impacts of emotionaware interventions in the form of implicit cues, visual mirroring and empathic speech synthesis. We envision emotion-awareness as a safety feature which can detect if a driver is unfit or in need of support, based on the propagation of robust emotion detection technology. This thesis entails methods to build emotional experiences derived from a variety of lab and simulator studies, expert feedback, car-storming sessions and design thinking workshops. Verbesserung des Nutzererlebnisses durch emotionale Interaktion: Emotionen tragen einen großen Teil zum Nutzerlebnis bei, darum ist es nur sinnvoll den zweiten Fokuspunkt dieser Arbeit auf systeminitiierte emotionale Interaktion zu legen.Wir stellen die Ergebnisse nutzerzentrierter Ideenfindung und mehrer Evaluationsstudien der resultierenden Systeme vor. Um sich den Vorlieben und Eigenschaften von Nutzern anzupassen wird nicht zwingend Emotionserkennung benötigt. Der Mehrwert solcher Systeme besteht vielmehr darin, auf Basis verfügbarer Verhaltensdaten ein emotional anspruchsvolles Erlebnis zu ermöglichen.     Independent learners in abstract traffic scenarios

    Traffic is a phenomena that emerges from individual, uncoordinatedand, most of the times, selfish route choice made by drivers. In general, this leads topoor global and individual performance, regarding travel times and road network loadbalance. This work presents a reinforcement learning based approach for route choicewhich relies solely on drivers experience to guide their decisions. There is no coordinatedlearning mechanism, thus driver agents are independent learners. Our approachis tested on two abstract traffic scenarios and it is compared to other route choice methods.Experimental results show that drivers learn routes in complex scenarios with noprior knowledge. Plus, the approach outperforms the compared route choice methodsregarding drivers’ travel time. Also, satisfactory performance is achieved regardingroad network load balance. The simplicity, realistic assumptions and performance ofthe proposed approach suggests that it is a feasible candidate for implementation innavigation systems for guiding drivers decision regarding route choice

    Logistics 4.0: Evolution of transport for the pharmaceutical sector: Evolution and application analysis of autonomous vehicles for pharmaceutical logistics in Portugal

    Digital transformation makes the business environment increasingly competitive. Companies must follow this transformation to differentiate themselves and build a solid competitive position in the markets in which they operate. In this sense, it is crucial to recognize the importance of new technologies in improving logistics operations and the advantages that come with them. Among these technologies, autonomous vehicles stand out. Thus, this study attempts, on the one hand, to understand how autonomous vehicle technology can transform the way goods are transported and how logistics processes and the dynamics within supply chains can be improved. On the other hand, it aims to understand how companies in the supply chain of the pharmaceutical market in Portugal view these transformations from the point of view of the logistics operations they develop. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate if it is possible to implement this technology in the sector and in which activities its use will bring more benefits and may be feasible. The main results allow us to conclude that autonomous vehicles are already a reality in various activities, particularly for logistics operations carried out in restricted environments such as warehouses. In this segment of warehouse activities, companies in the sector under study are more willing to invest in autonomous vehicles. The results indicate that companies do not believe in the possibility of these vehicles being used in the distribution of medicines in the short and medium-term, and there are still factors that limit the introduction of this technology in this market.A transformação digital torna o ambiente empresarial cada vez mais competitivo. As empresas devem seguir essa transformação, caso queiram diferenciar-se e construir uma posição competitiva sólida nos mercados em que operam. Neste sentido, é crucial reconhecer a importância das novas tecnologias na melhoria das operações logísticas e as vantagens que daí advêm. Entre estas tecnologias destacam-se os veículos autónomos. Deste modo, o presente estudo tenta, por um lado, compreender de que forma é que a tecnologia dos veículos autónomos poderá transformar a maneira como os bens são transportados, e como os processos logísticos e as dinâmicas dentro das cadeias de abastecimento podem ser melhorados. Por outro lado, visa perceber como é que as empresas da cadeia de abastecimento do mercado farmacêutico em Portugal, encaram estas transformações do ponto de vista das operações logísticas que desenvolvem. Assim sendo, esta investigação pretende avaliar se será possível implementar esta tecnologia no sector e em que atividades a sua utilização trará mais benefícios e poderá ser viável. Os principais resultados alcançados permitem concluir que, os veículos autónomos já são uma realidade em várias atividades, nomeadamente nas operações logísticas efetuadas em ambientes restritos como armazéns. É neste segmento das atividades de armazém, que as empresas do sector em estudo estão mais recetivas em apostar na utilização de veículos autónomos. Os resultados indicam que as empresas não acreditam na possibilidade destes veículos serem utilizados na distribuição de medicamentos a curto e medio prazo, existindo ainda fatores que limitam a introdução desta tecnologia neste mercado
