The financing of climate change solutions is extremely urgent as countries face increasing negative impacts from climate change that pose severe threats to current and future generations. Damages from environmental disasters that have been linked to climate change, such as the Australian wildfires, Cyclone Idai, Cyclone Fani, Hurricane Dorian, and extreme flooding events in many countries across the world, have resulted in more than $100 billion dollars of damage in 2019 alone. The financial sector has the power to invest in solutions that positively affect the environment and meaningfully contribute to sustainable development. Impact investing is the practice of investing by prioritizing positive social and environmental impact while still seeking financial returns. The MaRS Centre for Impact Investing defines impact investing as the investor intention to create measurable positive environmental and social impact beyond financial returns. The ability of impact investing to catalyze climate change solutions is crucial to consider because nations urgently require monetary and material investment as they further develop infrastructure, increase resource consumption, and grow their economies while adapting to and mitigating climate change. The research objective of this study aimed to assess the degree to which impact investing can be a driver for climate change solutions. To understand the relationship between impact investing and climate change in financial institutions that engage in impact investing and to assess how impact investing can positively contribute to climate change solutions, a review of academic literature and a quantitative analysis of impact investors was conducted. A review of academic literature illustrated a tendency within the impact investing space to focus more on social issues than environmental challenges. This study’s quantitative analysis involved financial institutions that were Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) members, the largest global community of impact investors, and assessed their propensity for addressing climate change. The quantitative analysis focused on the effects of geographic region, investor type, and assets under management on impact investors’ focus on climate change. The results of this research indicate that the effects of geographic region and investor type is significant for impact investors addressing climate change, while the effect of assets under management was found to be not significant. There is strong growth potential and large opportunity for impact investors to make investment decisions inclined towards climate change solutions. This research adds to the academic and theoretical impact investing subject matter in that it uses a real-world sample of financial institutions practicing impact investing to observe and assess the degree to which impact investing can be a driver for climate change solutions. The practical contribution of this research is relevant to and useful for investment decision makers, impact investors, the financial industry, and the field of sustainable finance. This research has made a first step in analyzing the degree to which impact investors focus on climate change

Machphrasis: towards a poetics of video games in contemporary literary culture

This article develops Kawika Guillermo's ‚Äėmachphrasis‚Äô (2016) as a theoretical contribution to discourse considering the deployment of video games in contemporary literary culture. After presenting machphrasis‚Äô academic stakes, I propose that machphrasis can give explanations for some techniques and images endemic to late 20th/21st century writing with regards to video games represented in prose. By appending Guillermo's conceptual work with three additions, I work towards a reproducible poetics of the video game in prose writing. I will show that machphrasis may be used to understand video games in literature as proxies for anticipated technologies, as discursive tools for reckoning with new subjectivities indebted to play, and as the means for generating new ideological positions for those who play games but are excluded from the normative ‚Äėgamer‚Äô group. This contribution prepares current academic discourse for a future literary landscape increasingly beholden to machphrastic themes, ambitions, and language

Restoration of degraded land is key to enhancing land productivity and farmers' wellbeing in sub-Saharan Africa. Evidence shows that the benefits of land restoration are tremendous, ranging from biophysical benefits in soil health, agricultural productivity, ecosystem services, to socio-economic dimensions such as improving farmers‚Äô income and livelihoods. Yet one issue that is rarely considered is how the outcomes of restoration initiatives affect different social groups, specifically women, men, and the marginalized. Our study aims to understand the extent of gender and social inclusion in land restoration studies in Ethiopia. Through analyzing 314 peer-reviewed scientific articles on land restoration initiatives and studies for Ethiopia published between 1985 and 2020, we aimed to: i) develop a novel approach that would allow for the semi-automatization of analyzing gender aspects in a large set of scientific documents using machine learning techniques, ii) assessed the current evidence on gender integration in peer-reviewed studies related to RDL, and iii) identified what gender issues are discussed in RDL literature. We employed text mining techniques to analyze the literature for keywords and to classify articles into three main classes: gender blind, gender sensitive, and gender transformative, based on the extent to which gender and social inclusion keywords appeared in the studies. Our analysis showed that gender and social inclusion are rarely considered in landscape restoration studies in Ethiopia, as most studies and interventions are heavily focused on the biophysical and environmental aspects of restoration. Despite an exponential increase in the use of gender and social inclusion keywords after 2005, most of the research (58 percent of articles) remains gender blind. The most frequently used related terms remained generic, e.g. community, access, participatory, and tenure. Only 38% of the studies could be classified as gender sensitive to a certain degree, and a strikingly low number of articles (4 percent) ‚Äē which consider the systematic challenges women face ‚Äē could be defined as gender transformative. This implies that scientific evidence about how land restoration has benefited men and women, and to what extent it could transform gender and power dynamics, is lacking. Our findings demonstrate the urgent need to consider gender and social inclusion to ensure associated benefits of land restoration practices

This article discusses the relationship between linguistic translation and social translation through a study of the social actions involved in the transformation of objects into artworks in a postcolonial context. Based on an ethnographic study of a contemporary San art workshop in Botswana, it explores how translations processes condition and modify the definition and status of artworks. To this end, this article examines one particular moment ‚Ästthe titling of pieces¬†‚Äď through which many operations of translation are set in motion¬†: the transition from image to discourse on the image, from orality to script, from one language to another, and eventually from non-art to art. Through an analysis of the collaborative discussions involved in the titling of artworks, it highlights the misunderstandings, the reformulations and the shifts in meaning generated by these operations of translation. Notably it shows how a differentiated access to means of expression has a direct impact on the production of meaning and on the capacity of these pieces to become a new medium of representation for their authors. Finally, while the contribution of ethnography to the study of interlinguistic translations has often be noted, this article explores how a closer examination of linguistic translations may provide new insights into processes of social translation observed during ethnographical fieldworks
