    Active Queue Management for Fair Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks

    This paper investigates the interaction between end-to-end flow control and MAC-layer scheduling on wireless links. We consider a wireless network with multiple users receiving information from a common access point; each user suffers fading, and a scheduler allocates the channel based on channel quality,but subject to fairness and latency considerations. We show that the fairness property of the scheduler is compromised by the transport layer flow control of TCP New Reno. We provide a receiver-side control algorithm, CLAMP, that remedies this situation. CLAMP works at a receiver to control a TCP sender by setting the TCP receiver's advertised window limit, and this allows the scheduler to allocate bandwidth fairly between the users

    Resource dimensioning through buffer sampling

    Link dimensioning, i.e., selecting a (minimal) link capacity such that the users’ performance requirements are met, is a crucial component of network design. It requires insight into the interrelationship among the traffic offered (in terms of the mean offered load , but also its fluctuation around the mean, i.e., ‘burstiness’), the envisioned performance level, and the capacity needed. We first derive, for different performance criteria, theoretical dimensioning formulas that estimate the required capacity cc as a function of the input traffic and the performance target. For the special case of Gaussian input traffic, these formulas reduce to c=M+αVc = M + \alpha V, where directly relates to the performance requirement (as agreed upon in a service level agreement) and VV reflects the burstiness (at the timescale of interest). We also observe that Gaussianity applies for virtually all realistic scenarios; notably, already for a relatively low aggregation level, the Gaussianity assumption is justified.\ud As estimating MM is relatively straightforward, the remaining open issue concerns the estimation of VV. We argue that particularly if corresponds to small time-scales, it may be inaccurate to estimate it directly from the traffic traces. Therefore, we propose an indirect method that samples the buffer content, estimates the buffer content distribution, and ‘inverts’ this to the variance. We validate the inversion through extensive numerical experiments (using a sizeable collection of traffic traces from various representative locations); the resulting estimate of VV is then inserted in the dimensioning formula. These experiments show that both the inversion and the dimensioning formula are remarkably accurate

    User preference aware caching deployment for device-to-device caching networks

    Content caching in the device-to-device (D2D) cellular networks can be utilized to improve the content delivery efficiency and reduce traffic load of cellular networks. In such cache-enabled D2D cellular networks, how to cache the diversity contents in the multiple cache-enabled mobile terminals, namely, the caching deployment, has a substantial impact on the network performance. In this paper, a user preference aware caching deployment algorithm is proposed for D2D caching networks. First, the definition of the user interest similarity is given based on the user preference. Then, a content cache utility of a mobile terminal is defined by taking the transmission coverage region of this mobile terminal and the user interest similarity of its adjacent mobile terminals into consideration. A general cache utility maximization problem with joint caching deployment and cache space allocation is formulated, where the special logarithmic utility function is integrated. In doing so, the caching deployment and the cache space allocation can be decoupled by equal cache space allocation. Subsequently, we relax the logarithmic utility maximization problem, and obtain a low complexity near-optimal solution via a dual decomposition method. Compared with the existing caching placement methods, the proposed algorithm can achieve significant improvement on cache hit ratio, content access delay, and traffic offloading gain

    A Survey on the Contributions of Software-Defined Networking to Traffic Engineering

    Since the appearance of OpenFlow back in 2008, software-defined networking (SDN) has gained momentum. Although there are some discrepancies between the standards developing organizations working with SDN about what SDN is and how it is defined, they all outline traffic engineering (TE) as a key application. One of the most common objectives of TE is the congestion minimization, where techniques such as traffic splitting among multiple paths or advanced reservation systems are used. In such a scenario, this manuscript surveys the role of a comprehensive list of SDN protocols in TE solutions, in order to assess how these protocols can benefit TE. The SDN protocols have been categorized using the SDN architecture proposed by the open networking foundation, which differentiates among data-controller plane interfaces, application-controller plane interfaces, and management interfaces, in order to state how the interface type in which they operate influences TE. In addition, the impact of the SDN protocols on TE has been evaluated by comparing them with the path computation element (PCE)-based architecture. The PCE-based architecture has been selected to measure the impact of SDN on TE because it is the most novel TE architecture until the date, and because it already defines a set of metrics to measure the performance of TE solutions.     Time4: Time for SDN

    With the rise of Software Defined Networks (SDN), there is growing interest in dynamic and centralized traffic engineering, where decisions about forwarding paths are taken dynamically from a network-wide perspective. Frequent path reconfiguration can significantly improve the network performance, but should be handled with care, so as to minimize disruptions that may occur during network updates. In this paper we introduce Time4, an approach that uses accurate time to coordinate network updates. Time4 is a powerful tool in softwarized environments, that can be used for various network update scenarios. Specifically, we characterize a set of update scenarios called flow swaps, for which Time4 is the optimal update approach, yielding less packet loss than existing update approaches. We define the lossless flow allocation problem, and formally show that in environments with frequent path allocation, scenarios that require simultaneous changes at multiple network devices are inevitable. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a Time4-enabled OpenFlow prototype. The prototype is publicly available as open source. Our work includes an extension to the OpenFlow protocol that has been adopted by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), and is now included in OpenFlow 1.5. Our experimental results show the significant advantages of Time4 compared to other network update approaches, and demonstrate an SDN use case that is infeasible without Time4.Comment: This report is an extended version of "Software Defined Networks: It's About Time", which was accepted to IEEE INFOCOM 2016.
