Algebraic Approach to Timed Petri Nets
One aspect often needed when modelling systems of any kind is time-based analysis, especially for real-time or in general time-critical systems. Algebraic place/transition (P/T) nets do not inherently provide a way to model the passing of time or to restrict the ïŹring behaviour with regards to passing time. In this paper, we present an extension of algebraic P/T nets by adding time durations to transitions and timestamps to tokens. We deïŹne categories for different timed net classes and functorial relations between them. Our ïŹrst result is the deïŹnition of morphisms preserving ïŹring behaviour for all timed net classes. As second result, we deïŹne structuring techniques for timed P/T nets in a way that our category fulïŹlls the properties of M-adhesive systems, a general categorical framework for structuring and transforming high-level algebraic structures. We demonstrate our approach by applying it to model a real-time communication network
Encoding Higher Level Extensions of Petri Nets in Answer Set Programming
Answering realistic questions about biological systems and pathways similar
to the ones used by text books to test understanding of students about
biological systems is one of our long term research goals. Often these
questions require simulation based reasoning. To answer such questions, we need
formalisms to build pathway models, add extensions, simulate, and reason with
them. We chose Petri Nets and Answer Set Programming (ASP) as suitable
formalisms, since Petri Net models are similar to biological pathway diagrams;
and ASP provides easy extension and strong reasoning abilities. We found that
certain aspects of biological pathways, such as locations and substance types,
cannot be represented succinctly using regular Petri Nets. As a result, we need
higher level constructs like colored tokens. In this paper, we show how Petri
Nets with colored tokens can be encoded in ASP in an intuitive manner, how
additional Petri Net extensions can be added by making small code changes, and
how this work furthers our long term research goals. Our approach can be
adapted to other domains with similar modeling needs

The use of Petri nets for modeling pipelined processors
This paper discusses the use of Petri Nets for modeling and analyzing pipelined processors. Petri Nets are particularly well-suited to modeling the synchronization, buffering, resource contention and delicate timing so common in pipelined processors. Tools for simulating, animating and analyzing the behavior of the models are described. The usefulness of the tools and the analysis methods they support in evaluating the performance and analyzing the detailed timing of pipelined microprocessors is illustrated through an example
Effective representation of RT-LOTOS terms by finite time petri nets
The paper describes a transformational approach for the
specification and formal verification of concurrent and real-time systems. At upper level, one system is specified using the timed process algebra RT-LOTOS. The output of the proposed transformation is a Time Petri net (TPN). The paper particularly shows how a TPN can be automatically constructed from an RT-LOTOS specification using a compositionally defined mapping. The proof of the translation consistency is sketched in the paper and developed in [1]. The RT-LOTOS to TPN translation patterns formalized in the paper are being implemented. in a prototype tool. This enables reusing TPNs verification techniques and tools for the profit of RT-LOTOS
Formal and efficient verification techniques for Real-Time UML models
The real-time UML profile TURTLE has a formal semantics expressed by translation into a timed process algebra: RT-LOTOS. RTL, the formal verification tool developed for RT-LOTOS, was first used to check TURTLE models against design errors. This paper opens new avenues for TURTLE
model verification. It shows how recent work on translating RT-LOTOS specifications into Time Petri net model may be applied to TURTLE. RT-LOTOS to TPN translation patterns are presented. Their formal proof is the subject of another paper. These patterns have been implemented in a RT-LOTOS to TPN translator which has been interfaced with TINA, a Time Petri Net Analyzer which implements several reachability analysis procedures depending on the class of property to be verified. The paper illustrates the benefits of the TURTLE->RT-LOTOS->TPN transformation chain on an avionic case study
Testing real-time systems using TINA
The paper presents a technique for model-based black-box conformance testing of real-time systems using the Time Petri Net Analyzer TINA. Such test suites are derived from a prioritized time Petri net composed of two concurrent sub-nets specifying respectively the expected behaviour of the system under test and its environment. We describe how the toolbox TINA has been extended to support automatic generation of time-optimal test suites. The result is optimal in the sense that the set of test cases in the test suite have the shortest possible accumulated time to be executed. Input/output conformance serves as the notion of implementation correctness, essentially timed trace inclusion taking environment assumptions into account. Test cases selection is based either on using manually formulated test purposes or automatically from various coverage criteria specifying structural criteria of the model to be fulfilled by the test suite. We discuss how test purposes and coverage criterion are specified in the linear temporal logic SE-LTL, derive test sequences, and assign verdicts
Survivability study of a Water Cleaning Facility using Fluid Stochastic Petri Nets
This paper investigates the survivability of a water cleaning facility using Fluid Stochastic Petri Nets (FSPNs). Water cleaning facilities are responsible for providing drinking water to a specific district. The provided service is very important and makes such facilities belong to a nation's critical infrastructures. Therefore, such a facility should be able to recover in a timely manner after the occurrence of disasters. The use of FSPNs in survivability research is new and promising due to its general applicability. In this paper we model and analyze the survivability of of the last phases of the water cleaning process in a Dutch water company. Analysis results identify the weaknesses of the process and redundancy is suggested to improve the survivability

Performance analysis using timed Petri Nets
Petri Nets have been successfully used to model and evaluate the performance of distributed systems. Several researchers have extended the basic Petri Net model to include time, and have demonstrated that restricted classes of Petri Nets can be analyzed efficiently. Unfortunately, the restrictions prohibit the techniques from being applied to many interesting systems, e.g. communication protocols. This paper proposes a version of timed Petri Nets which accurately models communication protocols, and which can be analyzed using Timed Reachability Graphs. Procedures for constructing and analyzing these graphs are presented. The analysis is shown to be applicable to a larger class of Timed Petri Nets than previously thought. The model and the analysis technique are demonstrated using a simple communication protocol
