Multipath and interference errors reduction in gps using antenna arrays
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide satellite based positioning system that provides any user with
tridimensional position, speed and time information. The measured pseudorange is affected by the multipath propagation,
which probably is the major source of errors for high precision systems. After a presentation of the GPS and the basic
techniques employed to perform pseudorange measurements, the influence of the multipath components on the pseudorange
measurement is explained. Like every system the GPS is also exposed to the errors that can be caused by the interferences,
and a lot of civil applications need robust receivers to interferences for reasons of safety. In this paper some signal array
processing techniques for reducing the code measurement errors due to the multipath propagation and the interferences are
presented. Firstly, a non-adaptive beamforming is used. Secondly, a variant of the MUSIC and the maximum likelihood
estimator can be used to estimate the DOA of the reflections and the interferences, and then a weight vector that removes
these signals is calculated. In the third place, a beamforming with temporal reference is presented; the reference is not the
GPS signal itself, but the output of a matched filter to the code. An interesting feature of the proposed techniques is that they

Experimental analysis of dense multipath components in an industrial environment
This work presents an analysis of dense multipath components (DMC) in an industrial workshop. Radio channel sounding was performed with a vector network analyzer and virtual antenna arrays. The specular and dense multipath components were estimated with the RiMAX algorithm. The DMC covariance structure of the RiMAX data model was validated. Two DMC parameters were studied: the distribution of radio channel power between specular and dense multipath, and the DMC reverberation time. The DMC power accounted for 23% to 70% of the total channel power. A significant difference between DMC powers in line-of-sight and nonline-of-sight was observed, which can be largely attributed to the power of the line-of-sight multipath component. In agreement with room electromagnetics theory, the DMC reverberation time was found to be nearly constant. Overall, DMC in the industrial workshop is more important than in office environments: it occupies a fraction of the total channel power that is 4% to 13% larger. The industrial environment absorbs on average 29% of the electromagnetic energy compared to 45%-51% for office environments in literature: this results in a larger reverberation time in the former environment. GPS Multipath Detection in the Frequency Domain
Multipath is among the major sources of errors in precise positioning using
GPS and continues to be extensively studied. Two Fast Fourier Transform
(FFT)-based detectors are presented in this paper as GPS multipath detection
techniques. The detectors are formulated as binary hypothesis tests under the
assumption that the multipath exists for a sufficient time frame that allows
its detection based on the quadrature arm of the coherent Early-minus-Late
discriminator (Q EmL) for a scalar tracking loop (STL) or on the quadrature (Q
EmL) and/or in-phase arm (I EmL) for a vector tracking loop (VTL), using an
observation window of N samples. Performance analysis of the suggested
detectors is done on multipath signal data acquired from the multipath
environment simulator developed by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) as well as
on multipath data from real GPS signals. Application of the detection tests to
correlator outputs of scalar and vector tracking loops shows that they may be
used to exclude multipath contaminated satellites from the navigation solution.
These detection techniques can be extended to other Global Navigation Satellite

Indoor wireless communications and applications
Chapter 3 addresses challenges in radio link and system design in indoor scenarios. Given the fact that most human activities take place in indoor environments, the need for supporting ubiquitous indoor data connectivity and location/tracking service becomes even more important than in the previous decades. Specific technical challenges addressed in this section are(i), modelling complex indoor radio channels for effective antenna deployment, (ii), potential of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radios for supporting higher data rates, and (iii), feasible indoor localisation and tracking techniques, which are summarised in three dedicated sections of this chapter
Wideband performance comparison between the 40 GHz and 60 GHz frequency bands for indoor radio channels
When 5G networks are to be deployed, the usability of millimeter-wave frequency allocations seems to be left out of the debate. However, there is an open question regarding the advantages and disadvantages of the main candidates for this allocation: The use of the licensed spectrum near 40 GHz or the unlicensed band at 60 GHz. Both bands may be adequate for high performance radio communication systems, and this paper provides insight into such alternatives. A large measurement campaign supplied enough data to analyze and to evaluate the network performance for both frequency bands in different types of indoor environments: Both large rooms and narrow corridors, and both line of sight and obstructed line of sight conditions. As a result of such a campaign and after a deep analysis in terms of wideband parameters, the radio channel usability is analyzed with numerical data regarding its performance
Sub-Nanosecond Time of Flight on Commercial Wi-Fi Cards
Time-of-flight, i.e., the time incurred by a signal to travel from
transmitter to receiver, is perhaps the most intuitive way to measure distances
using wireless signals. It is used in major positioning systems such as GPS,
RADAR, and SONAR. However, attempts at using time-of-flight for indoor
localization have failed to deliver acceptable accuracy due to fundamental
limitations in measuring time on Wi-Fi and other RF consumer technologies.
While the research community has developed alternatives for RF-based indoor
localization that do not require time-of-flight, those approaches have their
own limitations that hamper their use in practice. In particular, many existing
approaches need receivers with large antenna arrays while commercial Wi-Fi
nodes have two or three antennas. Other systems require fingerprinting the
environment to create signal maps. More fundamentally, none of these methods
support indoor positioning between a pair of Wi-Fi devices
without~third~party~support.
In this paper, we present a set of algorithms that measure the time-of-flight
to sub-nanosecond accuracy on commercial Wi-Fi cards. We implement these
algorithms and demonstrate a system that achieves accurate device-to-device
localization, i.e. enables a pair of Wi-Fi devices to locate each other without
any support from the infrastructure, not even the location of the access

Ăšvod je vÄ›nován popisu souÄŤasnĂ©ho stavu vÄ›deckĂ©ho poznánĂ v oblasti RFID prostorovĂ© identifikace a struÄŤnĂ©mu shrnutĂ problematiky modelovánĂ a návrhu prototypĹŻ tÄ›chto systĂ©mĹŻ. Po specifikaci cĂlĹŻ disertace pokraÄŤuje práce popisem teorie modelovánĂ degenerovanĂ©ho kanálu pro RFID komunikaci. DetailnÄ› jsou rozebrány metody měřenĂ vzdálenosti a odhadu smÄ›ru pĹ™Ăchodu signálu zaloĹľenĂ© na zpracovánĂ fázovĂ© informace. Pro účely lokalizace je navrĹľeno nÄ›kolik scĂ©nářů rozmĂstÄ›nĂ antĂ©n. Modely degenerovanĂ©ho kanálu jsou simulovány v systĂ©mu MATLAB. VĂ˝znamná část tĂ©to práce je vÄ›nována konceptu softwarovÄ› definovanĂ©ho rádia (SDR) a specifikĹŻm jeho adaptace na UHF RFID, která vyuĹľitĂ běžnĂ˝ch SDR systĂ©mĹŻ znaÄŤnÄ› omezujĂ. Oba navrĹľenĂ© scĂ©náře rozmĂstÄ›nĂ antĂ©n jsou v závÄ›ru ověřeny lokalizaÄŤnĂm měřenĂm v reálnĂ˝ch podmĂnkách.The doctoral thesis is focused on methods and systems for ranging and localization of RFID tags operating in the UHF band. It begins with a description of the state of the art in the field of RFID positioning with short extension to the area of modeling and prototyping of such systems. After a brief specification of dissertation objectives, the thesis overviews the theory of degenerate channel modeling for RFID communication. Details are given about phase-based ranging and direction of arrival finding methods. Several antenna placement scenarios are proposed for localization purposes. The degenerate channel models are simulated in MATLAB. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to software defined radio (SDR) concept and its adaptation for UHF RFID operation, as it has its specialties which make the usage of standard SDR test equipment very disputable. Transmit carrier leakage into receiver path and requirements on local oscillator signals for mixing are discussed. The development of three experimental prototypes is also presented there: experimental interrogator EXIN-1, measurement system based on Ettus USRP platform, and antenna switching matrix for an emulation of SIMO system. The final part is focused on testing and evaluation of described positioning techniques based on complex backscatter channel transfer function measurement. Both narrowband/wideband ranging and direction of arrival methods are validated. Finally, both proposed antenna placement scenarios are evaluated with real-world measurements.
Comparison of SAGE and classical multi-antenna algorithms for multipath mitigation in real-world environment
