    Bearing fault analysis using kurtosis and wavelet based multi-scale PCA

    The vibration signal monitoring that is being generated by a rotor supported by a rolling element bearing is becoming important to define reliability of rotary machine. It is most prudent and useful method for bearing fault detection. Recently, there has been a lot of research on rolling element bearings fault. The kurtosis is most vital parameter to find inner race fault and outer race fault. It is enhanced by a proper selection of variable frame sizes and decompositions levels using wavelet based multi-scale principal component analysis (WMSPCA). It is observed that the kurtosis changes significantly as compared to the actual kurtosis of the un-decomposed faulty signals by proper selection of frame size and decompositions level

    Study of noise effect on bearing vibration signal based on statistical parameters

    The signals emanating from the bearings are complex and contribute to various distributions. The effect of the distribution and mathematical operations are responsible for the change in the statistical moments. This paper investigates the effect of noise on statistical moments of the bearing vibration signals. Initially, the distribution function for Healthy, inner race defect (IRD), outer race defect (ORD), and ball defect (BD) are tested using Kolmogorov Smirnov test (K-S test). The resulting distributions obtained from the K-S test are normal and Laplacian distributed patterns and convey the faulty state of the bearings. The change in noise levels and their influence on the statistical moments are verified. It is observed, the kurtosis for IRD and ORD decreases with increase in noise, whereas, the trend increases for healthy and BD faults

    Feature extraction of vibration signal using OMP-NWE method

    Feature extraction is one of the core problems in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of mechanical equipment. In this study, an OMP-NWE method of feature extraction is proposed, aiming at the problem of low accuracy of existing feature extraction method. The OMP-NWE method integrates the strengths of orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm with the benefits of nonparametric waveform estimation (NWE). Signal feature extraction model is constructed by design of filter bank and adaptive template signal. Then the vibration signal is linearly decomposed into a set of best matching waveform, which solves the problem that the basis function must be chosen in advance in OMP algorithm. The OMP-NWE method is applied to the feature extraction of the simulation and experimental vibration signal of rolling bearing, compared with the traditional OMP algorithm. Results show that the SNR of the extracted feature signal using OMP-NWE method increased by 19.22 % compared with that using the OMP method, which illustrates that OMP-NWE method has a higher accuracy in the feature extraction of unknown complex vibration signals. This work provides a new idea and a successful example for the feature extraction of vibration signal in the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of mechanical equipment

    Computing Intelligence Technique and Multiresolution Data Processing for Condition Monitoring

    Condition monitoring (CM) of rotary machines has gained increasing importance and extensive research in recent years. Due to the rapid growth of data volume, automated data processing is necessary in order to deal with massive data efficiently to produce timely and accurate diagnostic results. Artificial intelligence (AI) and adaptive data processing approaches can be promising solutions to the challenge of large data volume. Unfortunately, the majority of AI-based techniques in CM have been developed for only the post-processing (classification) stage, whereas the critical tasks including feature extraction and selection are still manually processed, which often require considerable time and efforts but also yield a performance depending on prior knowledge and diagnostic expertise. To achieve an automatic data processing, the research of this PhD project provides an integrated framework with two main approaches. Firstly, it focuses on extending AI techniques in all phases, including feature extraction by applying Componential Coding Neural Network (CCNN) which has been found to have unique properties of being trained through unsupervised learning, capable of dealing with raw datasets, translation invariance and high computational efficiency. These advantages of CCNN make it particularly suitable for automated analyzing of the vibration data arisen from typical machine components such as the rolling element bearings which exhibit periodic phenomena with high non-stationary and strong noise contamination. Then, once an anomaly is detected, a further analysis technique to identify the fault is proposed using a multiresolution data analysis approach based on Double-Density Discrete Wavelet Transform (DD-DWT) which was grounded on over-sampled filter banks with smooth tight frames. This makes it nearly shift-invariant which is important for extracting non-stationary periodical peaks. Also, in order to denoise and enhance the diagnostic features, a novel level-dependant adaptive thresholding method based on harmonic to signal ratio (HSR) is developed and implemented on the selected wavelet coefficients. This method has been developed to be a semi-automated (adaptive) approach to facilitate the process of fault diagnosis. The developed framework has been evaluated using both simulated and measured datasets from typical healthy and defective tapered roller bearings which are critical parts of all rotating machines. The results have demonstrated that the CCNN is a robust technique for early fault detection, and also showed that adaptive DD-DWT is a robust technique for diagnosing the faults induced to test bearings. The developed framework has achieved multi-objectives of high detection sensitivity, reliable diagnosis and minimized computing complexity

    The motor drive system plays a significant role in the safety of electric vehicles as a bridge for power transmission. Meanwhile, to enhance the efficiency and stability of the drive system, more and more studies based on AI technology are devoted to the fault detection and diagnosis of the motor drive system. This paper reviews the application of AI techniques in motor fault detection and diagnosis in recent years. AI-based FDD is divided into two main steps: feature extraction and fault classification. The application of different signal processing methods in feature extraction is discussed. In particular, the application of traditional machine learning and deep learning algorithms for fault classification is presented in detail. In addition, the characteristics of all techniques reviewed are summarized. Finally, the latest developments, research gaps and future challenges in fault monitoring and diagnosis of motor faults are discussed

    Information Theory and Its Application in Machine Condition Monitoring

    Condition monitoring of machinery is one of the most important aspects of many modern industries. With the rapid advancement of science and technology, machines are becoming increasingly complex. Moreover, an exponential increase of demand is leading an increasing requirement of machine output. As a result, in most modern industries, machines have to work for 24 hours a day. All these factors are leading to the deterioration of machine health in a higher rate than before. Breakdown of the key components of a machine such as bearing, gearbox or rollers can cause a catastrophic effect both in terms of financial and human costs. In this perspective, it is important not only to detect the fault at its earliest point of inception but necessary to design the overall monitoring process, such as fault classification, fault severity assessment and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction for better planning of the maintenance schedule.
