Time Aware Knowledge Extraction for Microblog Summarization on Twitter
Microblogging services like Twitter and Facebook collect millions of user
generated content every moment about trending news, occurring events, and so
on. Nevertheless, it is really a nightmare to find information of interest
through the huge amount of available posts that are often noise and redundant.
In general, social media analytics services have caught increasing attention
from both side research and industry. Specifically, the dynamic context of
microblogging requires to manage not only meaning of information but also the
evolution of knowledge over the timeline. This work defines Time Aware
Knowledge Extraction (briefly TAKE) methodology that relies on temporal
extension of Fuzzy Formal Concept Analysis. In particular, a microblog
summarization algorithm has been defined filtering the concepts organized by
TAKE in a time-dependent hierarchy. The algorithm addresses topic-based
summarization on Twitter. Besides considering the timing of the concepts,
another distinguish feature of the proposed microblog summarization framework
is the possibility to have more or less detailed summary, according to the
user's needs, with good levels of quality and completeness as highlighted in

A rule dynamics approach to event detection in Twitter with its application to sports and politics
The increasing popularity of Twitter as social network tool for opinion expression as well as informa- tion retrieval has resulted in the need to derive computational means to detect and track relevant top- ics/events in the network. The application of topic detection and tracking methods to tweets enable users to extract newsworthy content from the vast and somehow chaotic Twitter stream. In this paper, we ap- ply our technique named Transaction-based Rule Change Mining to extract newsworthy hashtag keywords present in tweets from two different domains namely; sports (The English FA Cup 2012) and politics (US Presidential Elections 2012 and Super Tuesday 2012). Noting the peculiar nature of event dynamics in these two domains, we apply different time-windows and update rates to each of the datasets in order to study their impact on performance. The performance effectiveness results reveal that our approach is able to accurately detect and track newsworthy content. In addition, the results show that the adaptation of the time-window exhibits better performance especially on the sports dataset, which can be attributed to the usually shorter duration of football events
Can twitter replace newswire for breaking news?
Twitter is often considered to be a useful source of real-time news, potentially replacing newswire for this purpose. But is this true? In this paper, we examine the extent to which news reporting in newswire and Twitter overlap and whether Twitter often reports news faster than traditional newswire providers. In particular, we analyse 77 days worth of tweet and newswire articles with respect to both manually identified major news events and larger volumes of automatically identified news events. Our results indicate that Twitter reports the same events as newswire providers, in addition to a long tail of minor events ignored by mainstream media. However, contrary to popular belief, neither stream leads the other when dealing with major news events, indicating that the value that Twitter can bring in a news setting comes predominantly from increased event coverage, not timeliness of reporting
Analysis and Forecasting of Trending Topics in Online Media Streams
Among the vast information available on the web, social media streams capture
what people currently pay attention to and how they feel about certain topics.
Awareness of such trending topics plays a crucial role in multimedia systems
such as trend aware recommendation and automatic vocabulary selection for video
concept detection systems.
Correctly utilizing trending topics requires a better understanding of their
various characteristics in different social media streams. To this end, we
present the first comprehensive study across three major online and social
media streams, Twitter, Google, and Wikipedia, covering thousands of trending
topics during an observation period of an entire year. Our results indicate
that depending on one's requirements one does not necessarily have to turn to
Twitter for information about current events and that some media streams
strongly emphasize content of specific categories. As our second key
contribution, we further present a novel approach for the challenging task of
forecasting the life cycle of trending topics in the very moment they emerge.
Our fully automated approach is based on a nearest neighbor forecasting
technique exploiting our assumption that semantically similar topics exhibit
similar behavior.
We demonstrate on a large-scale dataset of Wikipedia page view statistics
that forecasts by the proposed approach are about 9-48k views closer to the
actual viewing statistics compared to baseline methods and achieve a mean
average percentage error of 45-19% for time periods of up to 14 days.Comment: ACM Multimedia 201
A Topic Recommender for Journalists
The way in which people acquire information on events and form their own
opinion on them has changed dramatically with the advent of social media. For many
readers, the news gathered from online sources become an opportunity to share points
of view and information within micro-blogging platforms such as Twitter, mainly
aimed at satisfying their communication needs. Furthermore, the need to deepen the
aspects related to news stimulates a demand for additional information which is often
met through online encyclopedias, such as Wikipedia. This behaviour has also
influenced the way in which journalists write their articles, requiring a careful assessment
of what actually interests the readers. The goal of this paper is to present
a recommender system, What to Write and Why, capable of suggesting to a journalist,
for a given event, the aspects still uncovered in news articles on which the
readers focus their interest. The basic idea is to characterize an event according to
the echo it receives in online news sources and associate it with the corresponding
readers’ communicative and informative patterns, detected through the analysis of
Twitter and Wikipedia, respectively. Our methodology temporally aligns the results
of this analysis and recommends the concepts that emerge as topics of interest from
Twitter and Wikipedia, either not covered or poorly covered in the published news
articles
