The Chameleon Architecture for Streaming DSP Applications
We focus on architectures for streaming DSP applications such as wireless baseband processing and image processing. We aim at a single generic architecture that is capable of dealing with different DSP applications. This architecture has to be energy efficient and fault tolerant. We introduce a heterogeneous tiled architecture and present the details of a domain-specific reconfigurable tile processor called Montium. This reconfigurable processor has a small footprint (1.8 mm in a 130 nm process), is power efficient and exploits the locality of reference principle. Reconfiguring the device is very fast, for example, loading the coefficients for a 200 tap FIR filter is done within 80 clock cycles. The tiles on the tiled architecture are connected to a Network-on-Chip (NoC) via a network interface (NI). Two NoCs have been developed: a packet-switched and a circuit-switched version. Both provide two types of services: guaranteed throughput (GT) and best effort (BE). For both NoCs estimates of power consumption are presented. The NI synchronizes data transfers, configures and starts/stops the tile processor. For dynamically mapping applications onto the tiled architecture, we introduce a run-time mapping tool
A survey on scheduling and mapping techniques in 3D Network-on-chip
Network-on-Chips (NoCs) have been widely employed in the design of
multiprocessor system-on-chips (MPSoCs) as a scalable communication solution.
NoCs enable communications between on-chip Intellectual Property (IP) cores and
allow those cores to achieve higher performance by outsourcing their
communication tasks. Mapping and Scheduling methodologies are key elements in
assigning application tasks, allocating the tasks to the IPs, and organising
communication among them to achieve some specified objectives. The goal of this
paper is to present a detailed state-of-the-art of research in the field of
mapping and scheduling of applications on 3D NoC, classifying the works based
on several dimensions and giving some potential research directions
Run-time Spatial Mapping of Streaming Applications to Heterogeneous Multi-Processor Systems
In this paper, we define the problem of spatial mapping. We present reasons why performing spatial mappings at run-time is both necessary and desirable. We propose what is—to our knowledge—the first attempt at a formal description of spatial mappings for the embedded real-time streaming application domain. Thereby, we introduce criteria for a qualitative comparison of these spatial mappings. As an illustration of how our formalization relates to practice, we relate our own spatial mapping algorithm to the formal model
Performance evaluation of HEVC RCL applications mapped onto NoC-based embedded platforms
Today, several applications running into embedded systems have to fulfill soft or hard timing constraints. Video applications, like the modern High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), e.g., most often have soft real-time constraints. However, in specific scenarios, such as in robotic surgeries, the coupling of satellites and so on, harder timing constraints arise, becoming a huge challenge. Although the implementation of such applications in Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) being an alternative to reduce their algorithmic complexity and meet real-time constraints, a performance evaluation of the mapped NoC and the schedulability analysis for a given application are mandatory. In this work we make a performance evaluation of HEVC Residual Coding Loop (RCL) mapped onto a NoC-based embedded platform, considering the encoding of a single 1920x1080 pixels frame. A set of analysis exploring the combination of different NoC sizes and task mapping strategies were performed, showing for the typical and upper-bound workload cases scenarios when the application is schedulable and meets the real-time constraints
Energy and performance-aware application mapping for inhomogeneous 3D networks-on-chip
Three dimensional Networks-on-Chip (3D NoCs) have evolved as an ideal solution to the communication demands and complexity of future high density many core architectures. However, the design practicality of 3D NoCs faces several challenges such as thermal issues, high power consumption and area overhead of 3D routers as well as high complexity and cost of vertical link implementation. To mitigate the performance and manufacturing cost of 3D NoCs, inhomogeneous architectures have emerged to combine 2D and 3D routers in 3D NoCs producing lower area and energy consumption while maintaining the performance of homogeneous 3D NoCs. Due to the limited number of vertical links, application mapping on inhomogeneous 3D NoCs can be complex. However, application mapping has a great impact on the performance and energy consumption of NoCs. This paper presents an energy and performance aware application mapping algorithm for inhomogeneous 3D NoCs. The algorithm has been evaluated with various realistic traffic patterns and compared with existing mapping algorithms. Experimental results show NoCs mapped with the proposed algorithm have lower energy consumption and significant reduction in packet delays compared to the existing algorithms and comparable average packet latency with Branch-and-Bound
From MARTE to Reconfigurable NoCs: A model driven design methodology
Due to the continuous exponential rise in SoC's design complexity, there is a critical need to find new seamless methodologies and tools to handle the SoC co-design aspects. We address this issue and propose a novel SoC co-design methodology based on Model Driven Engineering and the MARTE (Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time and Embedded Systems) standard proposed by Object Management Group, to raise the design abstraction levels. Extensions of this standard have enabled us to move from high level specifications to execution platforms such as reconfigurable FPGAs. In this paper, we present a high level modeling approach that targets modern Network on Chips systems. The overall objective: to perform system modeling at a high abstraction level expressed in Unified Modeling Language (UML); and afterwards, transform these high level models into detailed enriched lower level models in order to automatically generate the necessary code for final FPGA synthesis
