EURACE: A Massively Parallel Agent-Based Model of the European Economy

    Get PDF
EURACE is a major European attempt to construct an agent-based model of the European economy with a very large population of autonomous, purposive agents interacting in a complicated economic environment. To create it, major advances are needed, in particular in terms of economic modeling and software engineering. In this paper, we describe the general structure of the economic model developed for EURACE and present the Flexible Large-scale Agent Modeling Environment (FLAME) that will be used to describe the agents and run the model on massively parallel supercomputers. Illustrative simulations with a simplifiedmodel based on EURACE's labour market module are presented.Agent-based Computational Economics; X-Machines; Parallelcomputation.

Computability and Evolutionary Complexity: Markets As Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS)

The purpose of this Feature is to critically examine and to contribute to the burgeoning multi disciplinary literature on markets as complex adaptive systems (CAS). Three economists, Robert Axtell, Steven Durlauf and Arthur Robson who have distinguished themselves as pioneers in different aspects of how the thesis of evolutionary complexity pertains to market environments have contributed to this special issue. Axtell is concerned about the procedural aspects of attaining market equilibria in a decentralized setting and argues that principles on the complexity of feasible computation should rule in or out widely held models such as the Walrasian one. Robson puts forward the hypothesis called the Red Queen principle, well known from evolutionary biology, as a possible explanation for the evolution of complexity itself. Durlauf examines some of the claims that have been made in the name of complex systems theory to see whether these present testable hypothesis for economic models. My overview aims to use the wider literature on complex systems to provide a conceptual framework within which to discuss the issues raised for Economics in the above contributions and elsewhere. In particular, some assessment will be made on the extent to which modern complex systems theory and its application to markets as CAS constitutes a paradigm shift from more mainstream economic analysis

Study of Trust Aggregation Authentication Protocol

    Get PDF
The main focus of this work is to sense and share the data that are required to be trusted and the solutions are to be provided to the data, as trust management models. Additionally, the elements in the IoT network model are required to communicate with the trusted links, hence the identity services and authorization model are to be defined to develop the trust between the different entities or elements to exchange data in a reliable manner. Moreover, data and the services are to be accessed from the trusted elements, where the access control measures are also to be clearly defined. While considering the whole trust management model, identification, authentication, authorization and access control are to be clearly defined

The main objective of this thesis is to provide methodologies for finding exact worst case end to end communication delays of AFDX network. Presently, only pessimistic upper bounds of these delays can be calculated by using Network Calculus and Trajectory approach. To achieve this goal, different existing tools and approaches have been analyzed in the context of this thesis. Based on this analysis, it is deemed necessary to develop new approaches and algorithms. First, Model checking with existing well established real time model checking tools are explored, using timed automata. Then, exhaustive simulation technique is used with newly developed algorithms and their software implementation in order to find exact worst case communication delays of AFDX network. All this research work has been applied on real life implementation of AFDX network, allowing us to validate our research work on industrial scale configuration of AFDX network such as used on Airbus A380 aircraft. Towards an infrastructure for preparation and control of intelligent automation systems

In an attempt to handle some of the challenges of modern production, intelligent automation systems offer solutions that are flexible, adaptive, and collaborative. Contrary to traditional solutions, intelligent automation systems emerged just recently and thus lack the supporting tools and infrastructure that traditional systems nowadays take for granted. To support efficient development, commissioning, and control of such systems, this thesis summarizes various lessons learned during years of implementation. Based on what was learned, this thesis investigates key features of infrastructure for modern and flexible intelligent automation systems, as well as a number of important design solutions. For example, an important question is raised whether to decentralize the global state or to give complete access to the main controller. Moreover, in order to develop such systems, a framework for virtual preparation and commissioning is presented, with the main goal to offer support for engineers. As traditional virtual commissioning solutions are not intended for preparing highly flexible, collaborative, and dynamic systems, this framework aims to provide some of the groundwork and point to a direction for fast and integrated preparation and virtual commissioning of such systems. Finally, this thesis summarizes some of the investigations made on planning as satisfiability, in order to evaluate how different methods improve planning performance. Throughout the thesis, an industrial material kitting use case exemplifies presented perspectives, lessons learned, and frameworks
