    Performance Analysis of Train Communication Systems

    Trains are considered as a highly efficient transport mode which generate significant challenges in terms of their communication systems. For improved safety, to cope with the expected rapid increase in traffic, and to meet customer demands, an enhanced and reliable communication system is required for high-speed trains (HSRs). Mobile phone and laptop users would like to make use of the non-negligible time that they spend commuting but current HSR communication systems have a foreseeable end to their lifetime and a reliable, efficient, and fast communication replacement system has become essential. Encouraged by the use of existing power line networks for communication purposes, this research investigates the possibility of developing a train communication system based on the use of overhead line equipment (OLE). The ABCD transfer line model is developed to represent the transfer function of the OLE channel and is evaluated using computer simulations. The simulations of the OLE system used are based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing as the chosen modulation scheme. Within the train, for the provision of broadband services, developing a reliable communication system which is a combination of power line communication and optical wireless communication services using visible light communication (VLC) is considered. Mathematical methods were developed for these networks to assess the overall capacities and outage probabilities of the hybrid systems. Derivation of such analytical expressions offered opportunities to investigate the impact of several system parameters on the performance of the system. To assess the possibility of improving the performance of the proposed integrated systems, their performance in the presence of different relaying protocols has been comprehensively analyzed in terms of capacity and outage probability. This thesis studied the outage probability and energy per bit consumption performance of different relaying protocols over the VLC channel. Accurate analytical expressions for the overall outage probability and energyper-bit consumption of the proposed system configurations, including the single-hop and multi-hop approaches were derived. It was found that the transfer function of the OLE channel can be represented by the two-port network model. It was also revealed that transmission over OLE is negatively affected by the speed of the train, frequency, and length of the OLE link. In train, relay-based communication systems can provide reliable connectivity to the end-user. However, choosing an optimal system configuration can enhance system performance. It was also shown that increasing relay numbers on the network contributes to the total power consumption of the system

The resulting explosion of wireless demand has put immense pressure on available spectrum. Improving spectrum utilization is therefore necessary to enable wireless networks to keep up with burgeoning demand. This dissertation presents a cognitive and cooperative wireless architecture that significantly enhances spectrum utilization. Specifically, it introduces four new systems that embody a cross-layer design for cognition and cooperation. The first system, SWIFT, is a cognitive cross technology solution that enables wideband devices to exploit higher layer network semantics to adaptively sense which portions of the spectrum are occupied by unknown narrowband devices, and weave the remaining unoccupied spectrum bands into a single high-throughput wideband link. Second, FARA is a cooperative system that enables multi-channel wireless solutions like 802.11 to dynamically use all available channels for all devices in a performance-aware manner by using information from the physical layer and allocating to each link the frequency bands that show the highest performance for that link. SourceSync, the third system, enables wireless nodes in last-hop and wireless mesh networks to cooperatively transmit synchronously in order to exploit channel diversity and increase reliability. Finally, MegaMIMO enables wireless throughput to scale linearly with the number of transmitters by enabling multiple wireless transmitters to transmit simultaneously in the same frequency bands to multiple wireless receivers without interfering with each other. The systems in this dissertation demonstrate the practicality of cognitive and cooperative wireless systems to enable spectrum sharing. Further, as part of these systems, we design several novel primitives - adaptive spectrum sensing, time alignment, frequency synchronization, and distributed phase-coherent transmission, that can serve as fundamental building blocks for wireless cognition and cooperation.     Spatial Modulation for Generalized MIMO:Challenges, Opportunities, and Implementation

    A key challenge of future mobile communication research is to strike an attractive compromise between wireless network's area spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. This necessitates a clean-slate approach to wireless system design, embracing the rich body of existing knowledge, especially on multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technologies. This motivates the proposal of an emerging wireless communications concept conceived for single-radio-frequency (RF) large-scale MIMO communications, which is termed as SM. The concept of SM has established itself as a beneficial transmission paradigm, subsuming numerous members of the MIMO system family. The research of SM has reached sufficient maturity to motivate its comparison to state-of-the-art MIMO communications, as well as to inspire its application to other emerging wireless systems such as relay-aided, cooperative, small-cell, optical wireless, and power-efficient communications. Furthermore, it has received sufficient research attention to be implemented in testbeds, and it holds the promise of stimulating further vigorous interdisciplinary research in the years to come. This tutorial paper is intended to offer a comprehensive state-of-the-art survey on SM-MIMO research, to provide a critical appraisal of its potential advantages, and to promote the discussion of its beneficial application areas and their research challenges leading to the analysis of the technological issues associated with the implementation of SM-MIMO.
