Wireless data usage is increasing at a phenomenal rate and driving the need for continued innovations in wireless data technologies to provide more capacity and higher quality of service. In October 2009, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) submitted LTE-Advanced to the ITU as a proposed candidate IMT-Advanced technology for which specifications could become available in 2011 through Release-10 . The aim of “LTE-Advanced” is to further enhance LTE radio access in terms of system performance and capabilities compared to current cellular systems, including the first release of LTE, with a specific goal to ensure that LTE fulfills and even surpass the requirements of “IMT-Advanced” as defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) . This thesis offers an introduction to the mobile communication standard known as LTE Advanced, depicting the evolution of the standard from its roots and discussing several important technologies that help it evolve to accomplishing the IMT-Advanced requirements. A short history of the LTE standard is offered, along with a discussion of its standards and performance. LTE-Advanced details include analysis on the physical layer by investigating the performance of SC-FDMA and OFDMA of LTE physical layer. The investigation is done by considering different modulation schemes (QPSK, 16QAM and 64QAM) on the basis of PAPR, BER, power spectral density (PSD) and error probability by simulating the model of SC-FDMA & OFDMA. To evaluate the performance in presence of noise, an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel was introduced. A set of conclusions is derived from our results describing the effect of higher order modulation schemes on BER and error probability for both OFDMA and SC-FDMA. The power spectral densities of both the multiple access techniques (OFDMA and SC-FDMA) are calculated and result shows that the OFDMA has higher power spectral density.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format

The main objectives of this dissertation are the evaluation of the link level performance and the study of link abstraction for LTE/LTE-Advanced DL. An E-UTRA DL link level simulator has been developed based on MIMO-OFDM technology. We simulate channel estimation errors by a Gaussian additive noise error model called CEEM. The result of this simulator serves to evaluate the MIMO-OFDM LTE/LTE-Advanced DL link level performance in different environments. The basic idea of link abstraction methods is to map the vector of the subcarrier SNRs to a single scalar, the ESNR, which is then used to predict the BLER. We propose a novel link abstraction method that can predict the BLER with good accuracy in multipath fading and including the effects of HARQ retransmissions. The proposed method is based on estimating the mutual information between the transmitted bits and the received LLRs.Postprint (published version

In recent years, Machine-Type Communications (MTC) has become one of the most attractive technologies in the area of wireless networking. Different sources are predicting a large grow of smart grid machine-to-machine deployments in several decades, which also means that the total number of wireless devices will increase dramatically. In connection to this problem, the choice of the standard, which will satisfy all the MTC requirements without harming current wireless deployments has become very relevant. Because of these reasons, many companies are proposing to modify one (or several) of the current wireless standard in a way that it will be possible to use for MTC purposes. This will be perfect from point of view of interference problems, because they will be already included in a standard itself. Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE- A) is one of the most rapidly developing wireless technologies, that seems to be an ideal candidate for future MTC implementation. However, while the capacity of typical LTE-A network should be enough to satisfy traffic demands of large number of MTC devices, the signaling is not ready to face new requirements. In this Thesis, we are considering and partly solving problems, that could occur in LTE-A signaling channels under MTC conditions. Particularly, these are data access mechanisms, which could be realized via Physical Uplink Control Channel (PUCCH) and Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH). Speaking about assessment methods, the research made in this work is based on 2 approaches: simulation and analysis. Both of them are also in details described in the pages of this Thesis. As a conclusion it could be said that PUCCH channel is not suitable for the MTC data access, while PRACH is having problems only in heavily loaded (overloaded) cases and should be slightly modified to face them

The use of Millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum frequencies is seen as a key enabler technology for the future wireless communication systems to overcome the bandwidth shortage of the sub 6GHz microwave spectrum band, enabling high speed data transmissions in the 5G/6G systems. Nevertheless, mmWave propagation characteristics are associated to significant free-path losses and many more attenuations that become even more harsher as the frequency increases, rendering the communication challenging at this frequencies. To overcome these distinct disadvantages, multiple antenna arrays are employed to allow beamforming techniques for the transmission of narrower concentrated beams in more precise directions and less interference levels between them, consequently improving the link budget. Thus, to constantly assure that the communication with each device is done using the beam pair that allows the best possible connectivity, a set of Beam Management control procedures is necessary to assure an efficient beamformed connection establishment and its continuous maintenance between the device and the network. This dissertation will address the description of the Initial Beam Establishment (IBE) BM procedure, focusing the selection of the most suitable transmit-receive beam pair available after completed beam sweeping techniques to measure the different power levels of the received signal. The main goal is to design a new 3GPP-standard compliant beam pair selection algorithm based on SSS angle estimation (BSAE), that makes use of multiple Synchronization Signal Blocks (SSBs) to maximize the Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) value at the receiver, through the selected beam pair. This optimization is done using the Secondary Synchronization Signals (SSSs) present in each SSB to perform channel estimation in the digital domain (comprising the effects of the analog processing). Afterwards, the combination of those estimations were used to perform the equivalent channel propagation matrix estimation without the analog processing effects. Finally, through the channel propagation matrix, the angle that maximizes the RSRP was determined to compute the most suitable beam through the aggregated response vector. The obtained results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance levels compared to a conventional beam pair selection algorithm. Furthermore, a comparison with an optimal case is also done, i.e., the situation where the channel is known, and the optimal beam pair angle can be determined.

Recent trends to wireless Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication and Internet of Things (IoT) has created a new demand for more efficient low-throughput wireless data connections. Beside the traditional wireless standards, focused on high bandwidth data transfer, has emerged a new generation of Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) which targets for less power demanding low-throughput devices requiring inexpensive data connections. Recently released NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) specification extends the existing 4G/LTE standard allowing more easily accessible LPWAN cellular connectivity for IoT devices. Narrower bandwidth and lower data rates combined to a simplified air interface make it less resource demanding still benefiting from the widely spread LTE technologies and infrastructure. %% Applications & Why space Applications, such as wide scale sensor or asset tracking networks, can benefit from a global scale network coverage and easily available low-cost user equipment which could be made possible by new narrowband IoT satellite networks. In this thesis, the NB-IoT specification and its applicability for satellite communication is discussed. Primarily, LTE and NB-IoT standards are designed only for terrestrial and their utilization in Earth-to-space communication raises new challenges, such as timing and frequency synchronization requirements when utilizing Orthogonal Frequency Signal Multiplexing (OFDM) techniques. Many of these challenges can be overcome by specification adaptations and other existing techniques making minimal changes to the standard and allowing extension of the terrestrial cellular networks to global satellite access.Viimeaikaiset kehitystrendit koneiden välisessä kommunikaatiossa (Machine to Machine Communication, M2M) ja esineiden Internet (Internet of Things, IoT) -sovelluksissa ovat luoneet perinteisteisten nopean tiedonsiirron langattomien standardien ohelle uuden sukupolven LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Networks) -tekniikoita, jotka ovat tarkoitettu pienitehoisille tiedonsiirtoa tarvitseville sovelluksille. Viimeaikoina yleistynyt NB-IoT standardi laajentaa 4G/LTE standardia mahdollistaen entistä matalamman virrankulutuksen matkapuhelinyhteydet IoT laitteissa.

Providing QoS while optimizing the LTE network in a cost efficient manner is very challenging. Thus, radio scheduling is one of the most important functions in mobile broadband networks. The design of a mobile network radio scheduler holds several objectives that need to be satisfied, for example: the scheduler needs to maximize the radio performance by efficiently distributing the limited radio resources, since the operator's revenue depends on it. In addition, the scheduler has to guarantee the user's demands in terms of their Quality of Service (QoS). Thus, the design of an effective scheduler is rather a complex task. In this thesis, the author proposes the design of a radio scheduler that is optimized towards QoS guarantees and system performance optimization. The proposed scheduler is called Optimized Service Aware Scheduler (OSA). The OSA scheduler is tested and analyzed in several scenarios, and is compared against other well-known schedulers. A novel wireless network virtualization framework is also proposed in this thesis. The framework targets the concepts of wireless virtualization applied within the 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) system. LTE represents one of the new mobile communication systems that is just entering the market. Therefore, LTE was chosen as a case study to demonstrate the proposed wireless virtualization framework. The framework is implemented in the LTE network simulator and analyzed, highlighting the many advantages and potential gain that the virtualization process can achieve. Two potential gain scenarios that can result from using network virtualization in LTE systems are analyzed: Multiplexing gain coming from spectrum sharing, and multi-user diversity gain. Several LTE radio analytical models, based on Continuous Time Markov Chains (CTMC) are designed and developed in this thesis. These models target the modeling of three different time domain radio schedulers: Maximum Throughput (MaxT), Blind Equal Throughput (BET), and Optimized Service Aware Scheduler (OSA). The models are used to obtain faster results (i.e., in a very short time period in the order of seconds to minutes), compared to the simulation results that can take considerably longer periods, such as hours or sometimes even days. The model results are also compared against the simulation results, and it is shown that it provides a good match. Thus, it can be used for fast radio dimensioning purposes. Overall, the concepts, investigations, and the analytical models presented in this thesis can help mobile network operators to optimize their radio network and provide the necessary means to support services QoS differentiations and guarantees. In addition, the network virtualization concepts provides an excellent tool that can enable the operators to share their resources and reduce their cost, as well as provides good chances for smaller operators to enter the market
