IEEE 802.11ac MU-MIMO Wireless LAN cells with legacy clients
We provide an empirical evaluation of an IEEE 802.11ac Wireless LocalArea Network (WLAN) cell with Multiple User Multiple Input MultipleOutput (MU-MIMO) technology. We conducted our experiments on a testbed comprising consumer equipment under different office scenarios using 40MHz and 80MHz channels. This is the first performance study of MU-MIMO with 802.11ac in an operational scenario using a commercial access point. We find that, for clients that do not support MU-MIMO,operating in a cell that has MU-MIMO enabled may result in reduced performance.Postprin
Impact of cell load on 5GHz IEEE 802.11 WLAN
We have conducted an empirical study of the latest 5GHz IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) variants of 802.11n (5GHz) and 802.11ac (Wave 1), under different cell load conditions. We have considered typical configurations of both protocols on a Linux testbed. Under light load,there is no clear difference between 802.11n and 802.11ac in terms of performance and energy consumption. However, in some cases of high cell load, we have found that there may be a small advantage with 802.11ac. Overall, we conclude that there may be little benefit in upgrading from 802.11n (5GHz) to 802.11ac in its current offering, as the benefits may be too small.Postprin
Quality of service differentiation for multimedia delivery in wireless LANs
Delivering multimedia content to heterogeneous devices over a variable networking environment while maintaining high quality levels involves many technical challenges. The research reported in this thesis presents a solution for Quality of Service (QoS)-based service differentiation when delivering multimedia content over the wireless LANs. This thesis has three major contributions outlined below:
1. A Model-based Bandwidth Estimation algorithm (MBE), which estimates the available bandwidth based on novel TCP and UDP throughput models over IEEE 802.11 WLANs. MBE has been modelled, implemented, and tested through simulations and real life testing. In comparison with other bandwidth estimation techniques, MBE shows better performance in terms of error rate, overhead, and loss.
2. An intelligent Prioritized Adaptive Scheme (iPAS), which provides QoS service differentiation for multimedia delivery in wireless networks. iPAS assigns dynamic priorities to various streams and determines their bandwidth share by employing a probabilistic approach-which makes use of stereotypes. The total bandwidth to be allocated is estimated using MBE. The priority level of individual stream is variable and dependent on stream-related characteristics and delivery QoS parameters. iPAS can be deployed seamlessly over the original IEEE 802.11 protocols and can be included in the IEEE 802.21 framework in order to optimize the control signal communication. iPAS has been modelled, implemented, and evaluated via simulations. The results demonstrate that iPAS achieves better performance than the equal channel access mechanism over IEEE 802.11 DCF and a service differentiation scheme on top of IEEE 802.11e EDCA, in terms of fairness, throughput, delay, loss, and estimated PSNR. Additionally, both objective and subjective video quality assessment have been performed using a prototype system.
3. A QoS-based Downlink/Uplink Fairness Scheme, which uses the stereotypes-based structure to balance the QoS parameters (i.e. throughput, delay, and loss) between downlink and uplink VoIP traffic. The proposed scheme has been modelled and tested through simulations. The results show that, in comparison with other downlink/uplink fairness-oriented solutions, the proposed scheme performs better in terms of VoIP capacity and fairness level between downlink and uplink traffic

IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN traffic analysis: a cross-layer approach
textThe deployment of broadband wireless data networks, e.g., wireless local area
networks (WLANs) [29], experienced tremendous growth in the last several
years, and this trend is continuously gaining momentum. In fact, WLAN is
becoming an indispensable component of the modern telecommunication infrastructure.
Despite this optimistic outlook, however, little is known about
the impact of the wireless channel on the characteristics of WLAN traffic.
This dissertation characterizes the correlation structures of WLAN channel
with traffic statistics from a cross-layer point of view, and provides new measurement
methodologies and statistical models for WLAN networks.
Currently WLAN standards are designed within the paradigm of the
layered network architecture. For example, the architecture of IEEE 802.11

is almost identical to the Ethernet. However, wireless networks are fundamentally
different from their wired peers due to the shift of transmission media
from cables to over-the-air radio waves. This transition exposes wireless
systems to the influence of radio propagation, and more importantly, to the
temporal and spacial fluctuations of the radio channel that can actually be
propagated up to upper layers. However, the current WLAN architecture isolates
network layers, and largely ignores this impact. Therefore, we believe
that a cross-layer based approach is necessary to understand and reflect this
underlying impact of the channel to the upper layers of the network, especially
in relation to WLAN traffic behavior.
Measurement is one of the fundamental tools used to quantify radio
propagation. As part of this dissertation, a complete framework for a measurement
methodology, including hardware, software, and measurement procedures,
is established. Characteristics of the propagation channel are estimated
from measurement data, and the channel knowledge is applied to the upper
layers for more realistic and accurate modeling.
In WLAN environments, knowledge of the traffic characteristics is essential
for proper network provisioning, and for improving the performance
of the IEEE 802.11 standard and network devices, e.g., to design improved
MAC schemes, or to build better buffer scheduling algorithms with channel
knowledge, etc. Built upon extensive WLAN traffic traces, this dissertation
work presents cross-layer models for WLAN throughput predictions, traffic
statistics, and link layer characteristics.

The main goal of this dissertation work is to experiment with and develop
new methods for identifying channel characteristics. Thereby utilizing
this knowledge, we show how to predict and improve WLAN performance.
Within the framework of the developed cross-layer measurement methodology,
we conducted extensive measurements in different physical environments
and different settings such as office buildings and stores, and (1) show that
the impact of the propagation channel can be quantified by using simple large
scale channel metric (throughput over longer period of time), and (2) also
present the existence of a Doppler effect within today’s WLAN packet traffic
at sub-second time scales. We also show the real-world WLAN usage pattern
from our measurement results. From this data, we conclude that the key issues
to study WLAN networks include accurate site-specific propagation channel
modeling and real-time autonomous traffic control.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Cooperative Energy-efficient Management of Federated WiFi Networks
The proliferation of overlapping, always-on IEEE 802.11 access points (APs) in urban areas, can cause inefficient bandwidth usage and energy waste. Cooperation among APs could address these problems by allowing underused devices to hand over their wireless stations to nearby APs and temporarily switch off, while avoiding to overload a BSS and thus offloading congested APs. The federated house model provides an appealing backdrop to implement cooperation among APs. In this paper, we outline a distributed framework that assumes the presence of a multipurpose gateway with AP capabilities in every household. Our framework allows cooperation through the monitoring of local wireless resources and the triggering of offloading requests toward other federated gateways. Our simulation results show that, in realistic residential settings, the proposed framework yields an energy saving between 45 and 86 percent under typical usage patterns, while avoiding congestion and meeting user expectations in terms of throughput. Furthermore, we show the feasibility and the benefits of our framework with a real test-bed deployed on commodity hardware
A software framework for alleviating the effects of MAC-aware jamming attacks in wireless access networks
The IEEE 802.11 protocol inherently provides the same long-term throughput to all the clients associated with a given access point (AP). In this paper, we first identify a clever, low-power jamming attack that can take advantage of this behavioral trait: the placement of a lowpower jammer in a way that it affects a single legitimate client can cause starvation to all the other clients. In other words, the total throughput provided by the corresponding AP is drastically degraded. To fight against this attack, we design FIJI, a cross-layer anti-jamming system that detects such intelligent jammers and mitigates their impact on network performance. FIJI looks for anomalies in the AP load distribution to efficiently perform jammer detection. It then makes decisions with regards to optimally shaping the traffic such that: (a) the clients that are not explicitly jammed are shielded from experiencing starvation and, (b) the jammed clients receive the maximum possible throughput under the given conditions. We implement FIJI in real hardware; we evaluate its efficacy through experiments on two wireless testbeds, under different traffic scenarios, network densities and jammer locations. We perform experiments both indoors and outdoors, and we consider both WLAN and mesh deployments. Our measurements suggest that FIJI detects such jammers in realtime and alleviates their impact by allocating the available bandwidth in a fair and efficient way. © Springer Science+Business Media
