    A batch-service queueing model with a discrete batch Markovian arrival process

    Queueing systems with batch service have been investigated extensively during the past decades. However, nearly all the studied models share the common feature that an uncorrelated arrival process is considered, which is unrealistic in several real-life situations. In this paper, we study a discrete-time queueing model, with a server that only initiates service when the amount of customers in system (system content) reaches or exceeds a threshold. Correlation is taken into account by assuming a discrete batch Markovian arrival process (D-BMAP), i.e. the distribution of the number of customer arrivals per slot depends on a background state which is determined by a first-order Markov chain. We deduce the probability generating function of the system content at random slot marks and we examine the influence of correlation in the arrival process on the behavior of the system. We show that correlation merely has a small impact on the threshold that minimizes the mean system content. In addition, we demonstrate that correlation might have a significant influence on the system content and therefore has to be included in the model

    International audienceThis booklet contains the proceedings of the second European Conference in Queueing Theory (ECQT) that was held from the 18th to the 20th of July 2016 at the engineering school ENSEEIHT, Toulouse, France. ECQT is a biannual event where scientists and technicians in queueing theory and related areas get together to promote research, encourage interaction and exchange ideas. The spirit of the conference is to be a queueing event organized from within Europe, but open to participants from all over the world. The technical program of the 2016 edition consisted of 112 presentations organized in 29 sessions covering all trends in queueing theory, including the development of the theory, methodology advances, computational aspects and applications. Another exciting feature of ECQT2016 was the institution of the TakĂĄcs Award for outstanding PhD thesis on "Queueing Theory and its Applications"

    Analysis of a multi-server queueing model with vacations and optional secondary services

    In this paper we study a multi-server queueing model in which the customer arrive according to a Markovian arrival process. The customers may require, with a certain probability, an optional secondary service upon completion of a primary service. The secondary services are offered (in batches of varying size) when any of the following conditions holds good: (a) upon completion of a service a free server finds no primary customer waiting in the queue and there is at least one secondary customer (including possibly the primary customer becoming a secondary customer) waiting for service; (b) upon completion of a primary service, the customer requires a secondary service and at that time the number of customers needing a secondary service hits a pre-determined threshold value; (c) a server returning from a vacation finds no primary customer but at least one secondary customer waiting. The servers take vacation when there are no customers (either primary or secondary) waiting to receive service. The model is studied as a QBD-process using matrix-analytic methods and some illustrative examples arediscussed

    Multi-threshold Control of the BMAP/SM/1/K Queue with Group Services

    We consider a finite capacity queue in which arrivals occur according to a batch Markovian arrival process (BMAP). The customers are served in groups of varying sizes. The services are governed by a controlled semi-Markovian process according to a multithreshold strategy. We perform the steady-state analysis of this model by computing (a) the queue length distributions at departure and arbitrary epochs, (b) the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the sojourn time distribution of an admitted customer, and (c) some selected system performance measures. An optimization problem of interest is presented and some numerical examples are illustrated

These phase service queueing models have been investigated for resolving the congestion problems of many day-to-day as well as industrial scenarios. In this survey paper, an attempt has been made to review the work done by the prominent researchers on the phase service queues and their applications in several realistic queueing situations. The methodology used by several researchers for solving various phase service queueing models has also been described. We have classified the related literature based on modeling and methodological concepts. The main objective of present paper is to provide relevant information to the system analysts, managers, and industry people who are interested in using queueing theory to model congestion problems wherein the phase type services are prevalent

    Determining milk isolated and conjugated trans-unsaturated fatty acids using Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy

    The feasibility of Raman spectroscopy in combination with partial least-squares (PLS) regression for the determination of individual or grouped trans-monounsaturated fatty acids (trans-MUFA) and conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) in milk fat is demonstrated using spectra obtained at two temperature conditions: room, temperature and after freezing at -80 degrees C. The PLS results displayed capability for direct semiroutine quantification of several individual CLA (cis-9,trans-11 and trans-10,cis-12 C18:2) and trans-MUFA (trans-4-15 C18:1) in minor concentrations (below 1.0 g/100 g of milk fat). Calibration models were based on reference data cross-correlation or determined by specific scattering signals in the Raman spectra. Distinct bands for trans-MUFA (1674 cm(-1)) and CLA (1653 cm(-1)) from the trans isolated and cis,trans conjugated C=C bonds were identified, as well as original evidence for the temperature effect (new bands, peak shifts, and higher intensities) on the Raman spectra of fatty acid methyl ester and triacylglyceride standards, are supplied

    Queueing System with Potential for Recruiting Secondary Servers

    In this paper, we consider a single server queueing system in which the arrivals occur according to a Markovian arrival process (MAP). The served customers may be recruited (or opted from those customers’ point of view) to act as secondary servers to provide services to the waiting customers. Such customers who are recruited to be servers are referred to as secondary servers. The service times of the main as well as that of the secondary servers are assumed to be exponentially distributed possibly with different parameters. Assuming that at most there can only be one secondary server at any given time and that the secondary server will leave after serving its assigned group of customers, the model is studied as a QBD-type queue. However, one can also study this model as a G I/M/1-type queue. The model is analyzed in steady state, and a few illustrative numerical examples are presented

    MAP/PH/1 systems with group service: performance analysis under diïŹ€erent admission strategies

    2015 - 2016Recent advances in wireless communication networks led to possibility of multi-rate transmission of information. The queueing theory represents a valid tool to study how the performances of such communication systems can be improved, and to give proper solutions. Modeling a multi-rate transmission system, in terms of queueing theory, means that a particular discipline has to be considered: a group of requests from users can be processed simultaneously in parallel and processing of the whole group is supposed ïŹnished if processing of all individual requests belonging to this group is over. In order to model this typology of telecommunication systems, some particular assumption can be made on arrivals, which occur by a Markovian arrival process, and on service time and length of admission period, which are regulated by phase type distributions. Thus, in this thesis MAP/PH/1 queueing systems have been considered, with and without retrial to take into account all possible behaviours of the customers. The main goal of the research activity presented in this work is to introduce novel admission strategies for the described systems, in order to give a major contribute to the current performance analysys, in particular as regard the choice of the optimal length of admission period and optimal size of the groups. Dynamics of such systems are described by multidimensional Markov chains. Ergodicity condition for these Markov chains have been derived, stationary probability distribution of the states have been computed, formulas for the main performance measures of the system have been attained. La teoria delle code rappresenta un valido strumento per studiare come le performance di tali sistemi di comunicazione possano essere migliorate, e individuare opportune soluzioni. In termini di teoria delle code, modellare un sistema di trasmissione multi-frequenza signiïŹca considerare una determinata disciplina: un gruppo di richieste da parte di utenti possono essere processate simultaneamente in parallelo, e il processo dell’intero gruppo risulta completato se tutte le richieste appartenenti a tale gruppo sono espletate. Al ïŹne di modellare tale tipologia di sistemi di telecomunicazione, si possono deïŹnire particolari assunzioni sugli arrivi, determinati da processi di arrivo Markoviani, e sul tempo di servizio e lunghezza del periodo di ammissione, regolati da distribuzioni di tipo a fasi. Pertanto, in tale lavoro di tesi sono stati considerati sistemi a coda di tipo MAP/PH/1, con e senza retrial per considerare tutti i possibili comportamenti degli utenti. Il principale obiettivo dell’attivita` di ricerca presentata in tale lavoro `e introdurre nuove strategie di ammissione per i sistemi descritti, al ïŹne di fornire un maggior contributo alle attuali analisi sulle performance, in particolare relativamente alla scelta della lunghezza ottimale del periodo di ammissione e la dimensione ottimale dei gruppi. Le dinamiche di tali sistemi sono descritte da catene di Markov multidimensionali. `E stata ricavata la condizione di ergodicit`a per tali catene di Markov, `e stata calcolata la distribuzione delle probabilita` stazionarie degli stati, e sono state ottenute le formule per le misure dei principali parametri prestazionali del sistema.     Analysis of batch arrival bulk service queue with multiple vacation closedown essential and optional repair

    The objective of this paper is to analyze an queueing model with multiple vacation, closedown, essential and optional repair. Whenever the queue size is less than , the server starts closedown and then goes to multiple vacation. This process continues until at least customer is waiting in the queue. Breakdown may occur with probability when the server is busy. After finishing a batch of service, if the server gets breakdown with a probability , the server will be sent for repair. After the completion of the first essential repair, the server is sent to the second optional repair with probability . After repair (first or second) or if there is no breakdown with probability , the server resumes closedown if less than ` \u27 customers are waiting. Otherwise, the server starts the service under the general bulk service rule. Using supplementary variable technique, the probability generating function of the queue size at an arbitrary time is obtained for the steady-state case. Also some performance measures and cost model are derived. Numerical illustrations are presented to visualize the effect of various system parameters
