    Direct Torque Control Strategies of Induction Machine: Comparative Studies

    The direct torque control (DTC) was proposed as an alternative to the vector control in the middle of 1980s for AC machine control. This strategy bases on the direct determination of inverter switching states and offers a simpler scheme and less sensitivity to machine parameters. However, the variable switching frequency of DTC causes high flux and torque ripples which lead to an acoustical noise and degrade the performance of the control technique, especially at low-speed regions. In the objective of improving the performance of DTC for the induction motor, this work addresses the most important points concerning this issue. The reduction of high ripples, which are the major drawbacks, by applying a constant switching frequency using the space vector modulation (SVM) has been done firstly. Then, fuzzy DTC-SVM strategy with adaptive fuzzy-PI speed controller has been proposed. The results of all the discussed aspects of this chapter have been obtained by numerical simulation using MATLAB/Simulink software

    Simulation-based coyote optimization algorithm to determine gains of PI controller for enhancing the performance of solar PV water-pumping system

    In this study, a simulation-based coyote optimization algorithm (COA) to identify the gains of PI to ameliorate the water-pumping system performance fed from the photovoltaic system is presented. The aim is to develop a stand-alone water-pumping system powered by solar energy, i.e., without the need of electric power from the utility grid. The voltage of the DC bus was adopted as a good candidate to guarantee the extraction of the maximum power under partial shading conditions. In such a system, two proportional-integral (PI) controllers, at least, are necessary. The adjustment of (Proportional-Integral) controllers are always carried out by classical and tiresome trials and errors techniques which becomes a hard task and time-consuming. In order to overcome this problem, an optimization problem was reformulated and modeled under functional time-domain constraints, aiming at tuning these decision variables. For achieving the desired operational characteristics of the PV water-pumping system for both rotor speed and DC-link voltage, simultaneously, the proposed COA algorithm is adopted. It is carried out through resolving a multiobjective optimization problem employing the weighted-sum technique. Inspired on theCanis latransspecies, the COA algorithm is successfully investigated to resolve such a problem by taking into account some constraints in terms of time-domain performance as well as producing the maximum power from the photovoltaic generation system. To assess the efficiency of the suggested COA method, the classical Ziegler-Nichols and trial-error tuning methods for the DC-link voltage and rotor speed dynamics, were compared. The main outcomes ensured the effectiveness and superiority of the COA algorithm. Compared to the other reported techniques, it is superior in terms of convergence rapidity and solution qualities

    AbstractThis paper analyze design of space vector modulation based direct torque controlled (DTC-SVM) five-phase induction motor incorporated with ANN controller and has given a comparison with PI controller. This ANN controller is employed to improve the control performance parameters such as reducing torque & flux ripple, reducing the settling and rise time compare to that of PI controller. The modelling and simulation is performed in MATLAB, it shows that with intelligent controlled the performance parameters have been improved and drive system could be operated at low speed.     Implementation and Analysis of Direct Torque Control for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Using Gallium Nitride based Inverter

    Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) attract considerable attention in various industrial applications, such as electric and hybrid electric vehicles, due to their high efficiency and high-power density. In this thesis, the mathematical model of PMSM and two popular control strategies, field-oriented control (FOC) and direct torque control (DTC), are analyzed and compared. The results demonstrated that the DTC has better dynamic response in comparison to FOC. Moreover, DTC can eliminate the use of position sensor, which will save the cost of the PMSM drive system. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the design and implementation of high-performance DTC for PMSMs with a Gallium Nitride (GaN) based high switching frequency motor drive. First, the characteristics and operation principles of a PMSM are introduced. Then, the mathematical models of a PMSM under different coordinate systems are investigated. Consequently, a PMSM model is developed based on the dq rotating reference frame and implemented in the MATLAB/Simulink for validation. Two advanced PMSM control strategies, FOC and DTC, are investigated and compared in terms of control performance through comprehensive simulation studies and the results demonstrate that DTC has better dynamic performance. Conventional DTC contributes to higher torque ripple in the PMSM due to the limited switching frequency in a conventional semiconductor-based motor drive, which inevitably deteriorates the drive performance. Therefore, this thesis aims to reduce the torque ripple in the DTC based PMSM drive by using the new generation wide bandgap switching devices. More specifically, DTC is improved by using the optimized space vector pulse width modulation strategy and a higher switching frequency contributed by the GaN based motor drive. Finally, the proposed DTC-SVM based PMSM control strategy is implemented on the digital signal processor (DSP) and evaluated on the laboratory GaN based PMSM drive. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the proposed improvement in the DTC can further improve the PMSM drive performance

    Performance Analysis of DTC-SVM Sliding Mode Controllers-Based Parameters Estimator of Electric Motor Speed Drive

    This paper is concerned with a framework which unifies direct torque control space vector modulation (DTC-SVM) and variable structure control (VSC). The result is a hybrid VSC-DTC-SVM controller design which eliminates several major limitations of the two individual controls and retains merits of both controllers. It has been shown that obtained control laws are very sensitive to variations of the stator resistance, the rotor resistance, and the mutual inductance. This paper discusses the performances of adaptive controllers of VSC-DTC-SVM monitored induction motor drive in a wide speed range and even in the presence of parameters uncertainties and mismatching disturbances. Better estimations of the stator resistance, the rotor resistance, and the mutual inductance yield improvements of induction motor performances using VSC-DTC-SVM, thereby facilitating torque ripple minimization. Simulation results verified the performances of the proposed approach
