    Analysing observer preferences when presenting a product in a rendered scene: 2D vs. autostereoscopic 3D displays

    This research compares the way the image of a product included within a rendered scene shown on an autostereoscopic 3D display is rated versus the same image shown in a 2D display. The purpose is to understand the observer's preferences and to determine the features that a composition should have to highlight the product and to make its presentation more attractive to observers, thereby helping designers and advertisers who use both displays to prepare images to make them more effective when visually presenting a product. The results show that observers like the images on autostereoscopic 3D displays slightly more than those presented by means of 2D displays. On both displays the product is perceived more quickly when it is larger than the other elements and is shown with greater chromatic contrast, but a composition is seen as more attractive when the chromatic relationship between all the elements is more harmonious

    Reliable Pb(Zr,Ti)O3-based thin film piezoelectric micromirrors for space-applications

    Although Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) piezoelectric thin films are finding widespread applications on Earth, it is yet unclear if they are suitable for space-related applications. In space, their long-term reliability is a significant concern due to the difficulties of repairing and replacing malfunctioning devices. In this work, PZT thin film micromirrors for compact interferometric 3D imaging systems have been exposed to operating conditions encountered on a space mission and tested according to criteria set by the European Space Agency. Thermal cycling in vacuum, sinusoidal and random mechanical vibrations, and -radiation with and without bias did not degrade key functional device properties of the micromirror such as angular deflection, resonance frequency, polarization, and permittivity. Apart from -radiation, stressing the devices enhanced their large-signal angular deflection and improved their electrical lifetime compared to pristine devices. Their dielectric and ferroelectric characteristics remained comparable to that of a lab-scale environment. Simultaneously applying a 10 V field-down bias while -radiating the micromirrors changed the capacitance-field and polarization-field characteristics and enhanced the electrical imprint. After stress-testing, the median time-to-failure in moderate acceleration conditions of 150 kV/cm and 175 °C ranged from 1.95 to 2.64 h, close to 2.11 h as measured for a reference group. All actuator membranes had shorter electrical lifetimes, smaller voltage acceleration factors, and smaller activation energies, ranging from 2.56 to 2.88 V−1 and 1.03 to 1.09 eV, than simple bonding pads.     FVV Live: A real-time free-viewpoint video system with consumer electronics hardware

    FVV Live is a novel end-to-end free-viewpoint video system, designed for low cost and real-time operation, based on off-the-shelf components. The system has been designed to yield high-quality free-viewpoint video using consumer-grade cameras and hardware, which enables low deployment costs and easy installation for immersive event-broadcasting or videoconferencing. The paper describes the architecture of the system, including acquisition and encoding of multiview plus depth data in several capture servers and virtual view synthesis on an edge server. All the blocks of the system have been designed to overcome the limitations imposed by hardware and network, which impact directly on the accuracy of depth data and thus on the quality of virtual view synthesis. The design of FVV Live allows for an arbitrary number of cameras and capture servers, and the results presented in this paper correspond to an implementation with nine stereo-based depth cameras. FVV Live presents low motion-to-photon and end-to-end delays, which enables seamless free-viewpoint navigation and bilateral immersive communications. Moreover, the visual quality of FVV Live has been assessed through subjective assessment with satisfactory results, and additional comparative tests show that it is preferred over state-of-the-art DIBR alternatives

    Improved stereo matching algorithm based on census transform and dynamic histogram cost computation

    Stereo matching is a significant subject in the stereo vision algorithm. Traditional taxonomy composition consists of several issues in the stereo correspondences process such as radiometric distortion, discontinuity, and low accuracy at the low texture regions. This new taxonomy improves the local method of stereo matching algorithm based on the dynamic cost computation for disparity map measurement. This method utilised modified dynamic cost computation in the matching cost stage. A modified Census Transform with dynamic histogram is used to provide the cost volume. An adaptive bilateral filtering is applied to retain the image depth and edge information in the cost aggregation stage. A Winner Takes All (WTA) optimisation is applied in the disparity selection and a left-right check with an adaptive bilateral median filtering are employed for final refinement. Based on the dataset of standard Middlebury, the taxonomy has better accuracy and outperformed several other state-of-the-art algorithms

    This chapter addresses the view synthesis of natural scenes in virtual reality (VR) using depth image-based rendering (DIBR). This method reaches photorealistic results as it directly warps photos to obtain the output, avoiding the need to photograph every possible viewpoint or to make a 3D reconstruction of a scene followed by a ray-tracing rendering. An overview of the DIBR approach and frequently encountered challenges (disocclusion and ghosting artifacts, multi-view blending, handling of non-Lambertian objects) are described. Such technology finds applications in VR immersive displays and holography. Finally, a comprehensive manual of the Reference View Synthesis software (RVS), an open-source tool tested on open datasets and recognized by the MPEG-I standardization activities (where”I″ refers to”immersive”) is described for hands-on practicing

    Captured open book image de-warping and shading correction using 3D depth information

    Various three dimensional (3D) measuring or capturing devices are introduced to the society recently, and there are abundant possibilities that we can take advantage of this new technology. In this research, we worked on one useful application: to correct the distortion due to the curved shape of the pages of an open book in captured images using of depth information. This work is relevant to camera-based capture devices that can use a projector to cast structured light patterns to provide depth information. In order to improve the visual quality of captured documents, we established our algorithm from two perspectives. First, we deal with the shading situation in the captured image as a result of the non-uniform lighting condition. The shading correction is based on the shading information of the margin of the document, or based on the estimated relative position of each piece of the scanned open book to the active illumination. The open book will look like it is captured under a uniform lighting source in the corrected images. Next, we handle the geometric distortion. The 3D shape reconstruction methods and geometric rectification are used to flatten the curvature of an open book. The models we used exploit specific prior assumptions about the nature of the printed material that is captured. The warped text line can be straightened after this rectification. The overall readability improvement in captured open book images obtained by using our method can be observed in the experimental results

    Literature Survey On Stereo Vision Disparity Map Algorithms

    This paper presents a literature survey on existing disparity map algorithms. It focuses on four main stages of processing as proposed by Scharstein and Szeliski in a taxonomy and evaluation of dense two-frame stereo correspondence algorithms performed in 2002. To assist future researchers in developing their own stereo matching algorithms, a summary of the existing algorithms developed for every stage of processing is also provided. The survey also notes the implementation of previous software-based and hardware-based algorithms. Generally, the main processing module for a software-based implementation uses only a central processing unit. By contrast, a hardware-based implementation requires one or more additional processors for its processing module, such as graphical processing unit or a field programmable gate array. This literature survey also presents a method of qualitative measurement that is widely used by researchers in the area of stereo vision disparity mappings
