Desktop Sharing Portal
Desktop sharing technologies have existed since the late 80s. It is often used in scenarios where collaborative computing is beneficial to participants in the shared environment by the control of the more knowledgeable party. But the steps required in establishing a session is often cumbersome to many. Selection of a sharing method, obtaining sharing target’s network address, sharing tool’s desired ports, and firewall issues are major hurdles for a typical non-IT user. In this project, I have constructed a web-portal that helps collaborators to easily locate each other and initialize sharing sessions. The portal that I developed enables collaborated sessions to start as easily as browsing to a URL of the sharing service provider, with no need to download or follow installation instructions on either party’s end. In addition, I have added video conferencing and audio streaming capability to bring better collaborative and multimedia experience
An innovative collaborative high-performance platform for simulation
This paper presents an innovative collaborative visualization platform for the simulation-based design applications. Following the scope and the main objectives, the general architecture based on the internet standard technologies is explained. Based on a multi-domain approach, several demonstrators are involved crossing interests of industrial and academic communities. Related to the field of process engineering, we adapt and deploy a web-based architecture research application on the targeted platform
CyberLiveApp: a secure sharing and migration approach for live virtual desktop applications in a cloud environment
In recent years we have witnessed the rapid advent of cloud computing, in which the remote software is delivered as a service and accessed by users using a thin client over the Internet. In particular, the traditional desktop application can execute in the remote virtual machines without re-architecture providing a personal desktop experience to users through remote display technologies. However, existing cloud desktop applications mainly achieve isolation environments using virtual machines (VMs), which cannot adequately support application-oriented collaborations between multiple users and VMs. In this paper, we propose a flexible collaboration approach, named CyberLiveApp, to enable live virtual desktop applications sharing based on a cloud and virtualization infrastructure. The CyberLiveApp supports secure application sharing and on-demand migration among multiple users or equipment. To support VM desktop sharing among multiple users, a secure access mechanism is developed to distinguish view privileges allowing window operation events to be tracked to compute hidden window areas in real time. A proxy-based window filtering mechanism is also proposed to deliver desktops to different users. To support application sharing and migration between VMs, we use the presentation streaming redirection mechanism and VM cloning service. These approaches have been preliminary evaluated on an extended MetaVNC. Results of evaluations have verified that these approaches are effective and useful

A Discussion of Thin Client Technology for Computer Labs
Computer literacy is not negotiable for any professional in an increasingly
computerised environment. Educational institutions should be equipped to
provide this new basic training for modern life. Accordingly, computer labs are
an essential medium for education in almost any field. Computer labs are one of
the most popular IT infrastructures for technical training in primary and
secondary schools, universities and other educational institutions all over the
world. Unfortunately, a computer lab is expensive, in terms of both initial
purchase and annual maintenance costs, and especially when we want to run the
latest software. Hence, research efforts addressing computer lab efficiency,
performance or cost reduction would have a worldwide repercussion. In response
to this concern, this paper presents a survey on thin client technology for
computer labs in educational environments. Besides setting out the advantages
and drawbacks of this technology, we aim to refute false prejudices against
thin clients, identifying a set of educational scenarios where thin clients are
a better choice and others requiring traditional solutions

Enterprise portals: addressing the organisational and individual perspectives of information systems
Enterprise portals are being viewed as the next generation application platform of choice, offering benefits over both client/server and thin client arrangements. By providing a mediating layer between the information applications and resources of the organisation and the individuals using them, enterprise portals appear to provide a unique context to allow both the organisational and individual perspectives of information systems to be addressed. This study seeks to examine these often competing perspectives of information systems by using an exploratory empirical survey to investigate the actual deployment of enterprise portals within a range of different organisations. It is found that both the individual and organisational benefits that enterprise portals can offer appear to have been recognised, and coherent sets of services addressing each of these perspectives are being developed. Consistent with diffusion and acceptance of technology models, organisations appear to be commencing their portal developments with services that will ensure utilisation by individuals, and are subsequently seeking to realise organisational level benefits
