    Artificial Collective Intelligence Engineering: a Survey of Concepts and Perspectives

    Collectiveness is an important property of many systems--both natural and artificial. By exploiting a large number of individuals, it is often possible to produce effects that go far beyond the capabilities of the smartest individuals, or even to produce intelligent collective behaviour out of not-so-intelligent individuals. Indeed, collective intelligence, namely the capability of a group to act collectively in a seemingly intelligent way, is increasingly often a design goal of engineered computational systems--motivated by recent techno-scientific trends like the Internet of Things, swarm robotics, and crowd computing, just to name a few. For several years, the collective intelligence observed in natural and artificial systems has served as a source of inspiration for engineering ideas, models, and mechanisms. Today, artificial and computational collective intelligence are recognised research topics, spanning various techniques, kinds of target systems, and application domains. However, there is still a lot of fragmentation in the research panorama of the topic within computer science, and the verticality of most communities and contributions makes it difficult to extract the core underlying ideas and frames of reference. The challenge is to identify, place in a common structure, and ultimately connect the different areas and methods addressing intelligent collectives. To address this gap, this paper considers a set of broad scoping questions providing a map of collective intelligence research, mostly by the point of view of computer scientists and engineers. Accordingly, it covers preliminary notions, fundamental concepts, and the main research perspectives, identifying opportunities and challenges for researchers on artificial and computational collective intelligence engineering.Comment: This is the author's final version of the article, accepted for publication in the Artificial Life journal.     Elementary Landscape Decomposition of the Hamiltonian Path Optimization Problem

    There exist local search landscapes where the evaluation function is an eigenfunction of the graph Laplacian that corresponds to the neighborhood structure of the search space. Problems that dis- play this structure are called “Elementary Landscapes” and they have a number of special mathematical properties. The problems that are not elementary landscapes can be decomposed in a sum of elementary ones. This sum is called the elementary landscape decomposition of the problem.     Expected Fitness Gains of Randomized Search Heuristics for the Traveling Salesperson Problem.

    Randomized search heuristics are frequently applied to NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. The runtime analysis of randomized search heuristics has contributed tremendously to their theoretical understanding. Recently, randomized search heuristics have been examined regarding their achievable progress within a fixed time budget. We follow this approach and present a fixed budget analysis for an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. We consider the well-known Traveling Salesperson problem (TSP) and analyze the fitness increase that randomized search heuristics are able to achieve within a given fixed time budget. In particular, we analyze Manhattan and Euclidean TSP instances and Randomized Local Search (RLS), (1 + 1) EA and (1 + λ) EA algorithms for the TSP in a smoothed complexity setting and derive the lower bounds of the expected fitness gain for a specified number of generations

    A NOVEL APPROACH FOR DETECTION FAULT IN THE AIRCRAFT EXTERIOR BODY USING IMAGE PROCESSING

    The primary objective of this thesis is to develop innovative techniques for the inspection and maintenance of aircraft structures. We aim to streamline the entire process by utilizing images to detect potential defects in the aircraft body and comparing them to properly functioning images of the aircraft. This enables us to determine whether a specific section of the aircraft is faulty or not. We achieve this by employing image processing to train a model capable of identifying faulty images. The image processing methodology we use involves the use of images of both defective and operational parts of the aircraft\u27s exterior. These images undergo a preprocessing phase that preserves valuable details. During the training period, a new image of the same section of the aircraft is used to validate the model. After processing, the algorithm grades the image as faulty or normal. To facilitate our study, we rely on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) approach. This technique collects distinguishing features from a single patch created by the frame segmentation of a CNN kernel. Furthermore, we use various filters to process the images using the image processing toolbox available in Python. In our initial trials, we observed that the CNN model struggled with the overfitting of the faulty class. To address this, we applied image augmentation by converting a small dataset of 87 images to an augmented dataset of 4000 images. After passing the data through multiple convolutional layers and executing multiple epochs, our proposed model achieved an impressive training accuracy of 98.28%. In addition, we designed a GUI-based interface that allows users to input an image and view the results in terms of faulty or normal. Finally, we propose that the application of this research in the field of robotics would be an ideal area for future work
