    Successful System-use: It’s not just who you are, but what you do

    Information and communication technologies are so embedded in modern society that we have arrived at the point at which learning to use technology successfully may affect our day to day lives as much as does learning to eat or exercise properly. While information systems scholars have studied interesting post-adoption constructs such as continuance intentions and IT-appropriation, research explaining and predicting successful system-use (i.e., system-use that adds value) has been scarce. A better understanding of successful system-use would benefit both research and practice – scholars’ knowledge of positive outcomes of human-computer interactions would expand and practitioners could gain insights toward improving employee added-value system-use. We pursue this study by theorizing around user characteristics, adaptive behaviors, and system-use outcomes. Our findings suggest that it is not only who you are, but what you do, that drives successful system-use

    Theory building is not only underdeveloped in IT services management research, but in general in IS. Given the paradigm shift that comes from the development away from a networked economy towards a network economy, the lack of spending enough attention to theorizing in IS becomes even more obvious. In the light of other "megatrends" in IS research, such as the increasing professionalization and use of statistical methods and the exploitation of extremely large sets of data (often harvested from social media sites), we might lose interest in theorizing in the presence of the tremendous amount of available empirical data. In this position paper, the author advocates that services science researchers should focus on rigor and relevance in their research approaches

    Life Cycle Costing Applications in Sustainable Building

    Life Cycle Costing (LCC) which is defined ISO 15686-5:2005 is used to assess the sustainable and renewable technology used in building. The results indicate that the premium cost of sustainable/renewable technology in building is surprisingly lower than many have expected. The life time saving benefits are mainly coming from energy savings. However benefits might also come from improved indoor environmental quality, greater employee comfort/productivity, reduced employee health costs and lower operations and maintenance costs. These benefits will normally greatly exceed any additional upfront premium costs. The information derived from this study will assist people to be aware of the life cycle cost and benefit of sustainable and renewable technology in building. It will also provide the architect/engineer the information about energy conservation potential acquired via energy saving and conservation

    Theorizing and Generalizing About Risk Assessment and Regulation Through Comparative Nested Analysis of Representative Cases

    This article provides a framework and offers strategies for theorizing and generalizing about risk assessment and regulation developed in the context of an on-going comparative study of regulatory behavior. Construction of a universe of nearly 3,000 risks and study of a random sample of 100 of these risks allowed us to estimate relative U.S. and European regulatory precaution over a thirty-five-year period. Comparative nested analysis of cases selected from this universe of ecological, health, safety, and other risks or its eighteen categories or ninety-two subcategories of risk sources or causes will allow theory-testing and -building and many further descriptive and causal comparative generalizations

    Spatial Theorizing in Comparative and International Education Research

    The authors argue for a critical spatial perspective in comparative and international education. We briefly summarize how time and space have been conceptualized within our field. We then review mainstream social science literature that reflects a metanarrative, which we critique for contributing to false dichotomies between space and place and oversimplified views of the relationship between the global and the local. We present some of the key ideas associated with the “spatial turn,” including a relational understanding and productive capacity of space. In the final part of this article, we analyze the significance of new spatial theorizing for comparative and international education by reviewing examples of both comparative and educational researchers who are engaging with critical spatial theorizing. We argue that a possible way to confront binary thinking about space and place is by shifting attention to the relational conceptions of space, through analyses of networks, connections, and flows.Fil: Larsen, Marianne A..     Organizational Institutionalism and Sociology: A Reflection

    [Excerpt] In 1991, DiMaggio and Powell observed: Institutional theory presents a paradox. Institutional analysis is as old as Emile Durkheim\u27s exhortation to study \u27social facts as things\u27, yet sufficiently novel to be preceded by new in much of the contemporary literature. (1991: 1) We argue that this paradox is, at least in part, the result of a long-standing tension in sociology between more materialist, interest-driven explanations of behavior and ideational, normative explanations, a tension that has often driven oscillating waves of sociological theorizing. It underlies many classical debates (e.g., between Spencer and Durkheim, Weber and Marx, and even Parsons and Mills), and the waves of theory associated with it have produced a variety of \u27neo-isms\u27, including neo-Marxist as well as neo-institutionalist theories. This distinction in explanatory approaches is linked to a more general theoretical problematic for sociologists: how to provide a single, coherent account of both stable, persisting patterns of social behavior, and the breakdown and elimination of what were once deeply-entrenched patterns. In this chapter, we examine the history of these distinctive explanatory approaches in sociology, and locate the origins of contemporary institutional work on organizations within this context. We also consider how more recent organizational analyses in the tradition of institutional theory have been driven by and reflect this basic tension

    Sociomateriality and disabled individuals’ identity work: a critical poststructuralist research agenda

    This paper responds to calls to rebalance the role of materiality in identity work. Taking a critical poststructuralist approach to identity work and a relational ontology perspective on sociomateriality, we explore how a ‘disabled’ person’s identity work is shaped by and responds to the influences of embodied practices and material arrangements within the workplace. We achieve this by reviewing the notion of sociomateriality as a "constitutive entanglement" (Orlikowski, 2007: 1437) of the material and the human. More specifically, we discuss how disabled individuals are constituted through sociomaterial relations and practices involving the body, assistive technology and mundane artefacts. This paper, therefore, contributes to the emerging interest, in identity studies, on the role of the material within identity work, and, in Disability Studies, to the entanglement of the social and material in constructions of disability as difference

    This article discusses the potential of the use of blog technology in supporting research students at the university, and encourages its wider use. Individual blogs open only to student and supervisors can focus and structure dialogue and discussion, helping students to develop their argument and ‘voice’. The general blog “Learn, Live, Thrive” models the development of a reflexive research diary so that students can develop their own. It also encourages students to begin the process of theorization by sharing reading and ideas, and modelling theory. By being open and available to all students, general blogs add to the breadth, depth, effectiveness and efficiency of the supervision process, informing tutorials on the student’s particular topic
