A Multimedia Approach to Improving Retention in Undergraduate Anatomy and Physiology
This research compared differences in grades among students who utilized an adaptive instructional system (AIS) to study for their undergraduate anatomy and physiology exams. The AIS implemented multimedia techniques by combining machine-generated cloze questions with images drawn from the A&P textbook, specifically chapters 9 (musculature) and 10 (nervous system). The AIS adapted to the performance of each student and optimally chose which question they should see next. Participants studied using this AIS before the exam and were given extra credit for participation. I hypothesized that students who practiced using the AIS will perform better on their exams than those that did not. I hypothesized that multimedia practice will lead to higher scores on questions that directly correspond to trials in the system. A series of ANOVAs did not show significant results. An exploratory regression revealed that lecture-basd questions were easier than lab-based, indicating the importance of the multimedia component
Collocations in ESL writing: head verb frequency effects and malformed collocations responses
Collocations are words that commonly occur together or near each other in a text (Coxhead, 2006), for example, make a decision and foot the bill. Collocations and phrases are important because they help with fluency in writing and even speaking. This study explores the vocabulary knowledge of speakers of Malaysian English as it is assumed that non-native speakers of standard English do not share similar advantages to native speakers. It is due to the fact that non-native speakers, particularly adult learners, are normally expected to acquire words rather than phrases (Kuiper, Columbus & Schmitt, 2009). In addition to that, Wray (2002) claims that non-native speakers acquire individual words separately which later pair for correct collocations. Thus, this study examined the collocations acquired by Malaysian learners with exposure to local English. The study is looking at restricted verb-noun collocations of written English. The objective of the study is to assess the effect of head verb frequency on the acquisition of English restricted collocations. A group of foundation students who participated in the study have answered a set of cloze tests (Halim, 2014) and produced an essay each. The results show that there is a moderate and positive relationship between the head verb frequency and the test scores in the case high (light) frequency verbs of giving, stop make, get, and one medium frequency head verb, clear. The set of malformed collocations revealed the types of responses learners tend to come up with and indirectly illustrate the challenge the learners encounter in mastering restricted collocations. What is observed is that many of the non-idiomatic responses are from high light frequency and high frequency verbs. This suggests that the second hypothesis, that the verb choice made for the non-idiomatic answers would be at the high end of the frequency spectrum, was supported

Corpus-aided language pedagogy : the use of concordance lines in vocabulary instruction
Ankara : The Program of Teaching English as a Foreign Language Bilkent University, 2015.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 2015.Includes bibliographical references leaves 83-91.This study investigated the effectiveness of the use of a concordance software
and concordance lines as a pedagogical tool to learn the target vocabulary of a text
book. The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of corpus-aided
vocabulary instruction with traditional vocabulary teaching methods. This study also
examined the extent to which students used the target vocabulary in paragraph
writing exercises. Students’ perception as to the use of concordance lines in their
vocabulary learning was explored as well.
Eighty-two students from four intermediate level EFL classes at Karadeniz
Technical University School of Foreign Languages participated in the study. The
quantitative data were collected through the administration of three tests, three
writing assignments and a student questionnaire.
The statistical analysis of the test results revealed that results revealed that using concordance
lines in vocabulary instruction was more effective and yielded higher scores when
compared to traditional vocabulary instruction with the text book. Additionally, it
was found that using concordance lines in learning the target vocabulary produced
similar results when compared to using a text book in less controlled paragraph
writing exercises. The analysis of the student questionnaire showed that the students
had positive perception about using concordance lines in learning English
vocabulary.

Individual Differences and Instructed Second Language Acquisition: Insights from Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning
The present dissertation focuses on the role of cognitive individual difference factors in the acquisition of second language vocabulary in the context of intelligent computer assisted language learning (ICALL). The aim was to examine the association between working memory and declarative memory and the learning of English phrasal verbs in a web-based ICALL-mediated experiment. Following a pretest-posttest design, 127 adult learners of English were assigned to two instructional conditions, namely meaning-focused and form-focused conditions. Learners in both conditions read news texts on the web for about two weeks; learners in the form-focused condition additionally interacted with the texts via selecting multiple-choice options.
The results showed that both working memory and declarative memory were predictive of vocabulary acquisition. However, only the working memory effect was modulated by the instructional context, with the effect being found exclusively in the form-focused condition, and thus suggesting the presence of an aptitude-treatment interaction. Finally, findings also revealed that learning during treatment in the form-focused group was nonlinear, and that paying attention to form and meaning simultaneously impeded global reading comprehension for intermediate, not advanced learners.
From a theoretical perspective, the findings provide evidence to suggest that individual differences in both working memory and declarative memory affect the acquisition of lexical knowledge in ICALL-supported contexts. Methodologically, the current study illustrates the advantages of conducting interdisciplinary work between ICALL and second language acquisition by allowing for the collection of experimental data through a web-based, all-encompassing ICALL system. Overall, the present dissertation represents an initial attempt at characterizing who is likely to benefit from ICALL-based interventions
Illuminating variation:Individual differences in entrenchment of multi-word units

An investigation of some differences in A-level mathematics syllabuses in England and Wales
At the time when this study began, there were nine boards offering Advanced Level Mathematics syllabuses. Some of the boards offered three, and sometimes four versions of A-level Mathematics. The study looks at these various forms from a number of different standpoints. The first of these is a consideration of the 'readability' of the question papers themselves, using the Cloze Procedure. The data is analysed by a three-way, fully crossed, analysis of variance. The work then moves on to consider the structure of the various papers. It then proceeds to analyse questions from the papers under various headings. The method is a substantial modification of a method used by the GCE examination boards in cross-moderation studies.A questionnaire was developed to explore the opinions of sixth form teachers, regarding the various versions of A-level Mathematics. The opinions of university staff were also sought. The question as to whethersome A-level courses are better preparation for university mathematics courses is addressed. Results of students at A-level and in the first year university mathematics examinations are compared. The students who participated in the 'readability' exercise were also interviewed, after looking at further questions from a selection of A-level Mathematics papers.During the course of this study, a number of boards have started to offer modular, or unit based, courses. This significant development is considered towards the end of the study. Two schools and a sixth form college were visited, each one using a different modular A-level syllabus. An account of the observations is given. The study closes with a discussion of the findings from the various themes and makes suggestions for possible improvements
