Complexity of Restricted and Unrestricted Models of Molecular Computation
In [9] and [2] a formal model for molecular computing was
proposed, which makes focused use of affinity purification.
The use of PCR was suggested to expand the range of
feasible computations, resulting in a second model. In this
note, we give a precise characterization of these two models
in terms of recognized computational complexity classes,
namely branching programs (BP) and nondeterministic
branching programs (NBP) respectively. This allows us to
give upper and lower bounds on the complexity of desired
computations. Examples are given of computable and
uncomputable problems, given limited time

On shuffle products, acyclic automata and piecewise-testable languages
We show that the shuffle L \unicode{x29E2} F of a piecewise-testable
language and a finite language is piecewise-testable. The proof relies
on a classic but little-used automata-theoretic characterization of
piecewise-testable languages. We also discuss some mild generalizations of the
main result, and provide bounds on the piecewise complexity of L
\unicode{x29E2} F
On computing fixpoints in well-structured regular model checking, with applications to lossy channel systems
We prove a general finite convergence theorem for "upward-guarded" fixpoint
expressions over a well-quasi-ordered set. This has immediate applications in
regular model checking of well-structured systems, where a main issue is the
eventual convergence of fixpoint computations. In particular, we are able to
directly obtain several new decidability results on lossy channel systems.Comment: 16 page
A nonmonotone GRASP
A greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) is an itera-
tive multistart metaheuristic for difficult combinatorial optimization problems. Each
GRASP iteration consists of two phases: a construction phase, in which a feasible
solution is produced, and a local search phase, in which a local optimum in the
neighborhood of the constructed solution is sought. Repeated applications of the con-
struction procedure yields different starting solutions for the local search and the
best overall solution is kept as the result. The GRASP local search applies iterative
improvement until a locally optimal solution is found. During this phase, starting from
the current solution an improving neighbor solution is accepted and considered as the
new current solution. In this paper, we propose a variant of the GRASP framework that
uses a new “nonmonotone” strategy to explore the neighborhood of the current solu-
tion. We formally state the convergence of the nonmonotone local search to a locally
optimal solution and illustrate the effectiveness of the resulting Nonmonotone GRASP
on three classical hard combinatorial optimization problems: the maximum cut prob-
lem (MAX-CUT), the weighted maximum satisfiability problem (MAX-SAT), and
the quadratic assignment problem (QAP)
User involvement in healthcare technology development and assessment: Structured literature review
Purpose – Medical device users are one of the principal stakeholders of medical device technologies. User involvement in medical device technology development and assessment is central to meet their needs.
Design/methodology/approach – A structured review of literature, published from 1980 to 2005 in peer-reviewed journals, was carried out from social science perspective to investigate the practice of user involvement in the development and assessment of medical device technologies. This was followed by qualitative thematic analysis.
Findings – It is found that users of medical devices include clinicians, patients, carers and others. Different kinds of medical devices are developed and assessed by user involvement. The user involvement occurs at different stages of the medical device technology lifecycle and the degree of user involvement is in the order of design stage > testing and trials stage > deployment stage > concept stage. Methods most commonly used for capturing users’ perspectives are usability tests, interviews and questionnaire surveys.
Research limitations/implications – We did not review the relevant literature published in engineering, medical and nursing fields, which might have been useful.
Practical implications – Consideration of the users’ characteristics and the context of medical device use is critical for developing and assessing medical device technologies from users’ perspectives.
Originality/value – This study shows that users of medical device technologies are not homogeneous but heterogeneous, in several aspects, and their needs, skills and working environments vary. This is important consideration for incorporating users’ perspectives in medical device technologies.
