    SPECIAL ISSUE ON MEMBRANE COMPUTING, Seventh Brainstorming Week on Membrane Computing

    The present volume contains a selection of papers resulting from the Seventh Brainstorming Week on Membrane Computing (BWMC7), held in Sevilla, from February 2 to February 6, 2009. The meeting was organized by the Research Group on Natural Computing (RGNC) from Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence of Sevilla University. The previous editions of this series of meetings were organized in Tarragona (2003), and Sevilla (2004 – 2008). After the first BWMC, a special issue of Natural Computing – volume 2, number 3, 2003, and a special issue of New Generation Computing – volume 22, number 4, 2004, were published; papers from the second BWMC have appeared in a special issue of Journal of Universal Computer Science – volume 10, number 5, 2004, as well as in a special issue of Soft Computing – volume 9, number 5, 2005; a selection of papers written during the third BWMC has appeared in a special issue of International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science – volume 17, number 1, 2006); after the fourth BWMC a special issue of Theoretical Computer Science was edited – volume 372, numbers 2-3, 2007; after the fifth edition, a special issue of International Journal of Unconventional Computing was edited – volume 5, number 5, 2009; finally, a selection of papers elaborated during the sixth BWMC has appeared in a special issue of Fundamenta Informatica

    We provide an overview of theories of continuous time computation. These theories allow us to understand both the hardness of questions related to continuous time dynamical systems and the computational power of continuous time analog models. We survey the existing models, summarizing results, and point to relevant references in the literature

    Monte Carlo simulation of recrystallization

    A Monte Carlo computer simulation technique, in which a continuum system is modeled employing a discrete lattice, has been applied to the problem of recrystallization. Primary recrystallization is modeled under conditions where the degree of stored energy is varied and nucleation occurs homogeneously (without regard for position in the microstructure). The nucleation rate is chosen as site saturated. Temporal evolution of the simulated microstructures is analyzed to provide the time dependence of the recrystallized volume fraction and grain sizes. The recrystallized volume fraction shows sigmoidal variations with time. The data are approximately fit by the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation with the expected exponents, however significant deviations are observed for both small and large recrystallized volume fractions. Under constant rate nucleation conditions, the propensity for irregular grain shapes is decreased and the density of two sided grains increases

    On computing fixpoints in well-structured regular model checking, with applications to lossy channel systems

    We prove a general finite convergence theorem for "upward-guarded" fixpoint expressions over a well-quasi-ordered set. This has immediate applications in regular model checking of well-structured systems, where a main issue is the eventual convergence of fixpoint computations. In particular, we are able to directly obtain several new decidability results on lossy channel systems.Comment: 16 page

    Efficient Instantiation of Parameterised Boolean Equation Systems to Parity Games

    Parameterised Boolean Equation Systems (PBESs) are sequences of Boolean fixed point equations with data variables, used for, e.g., verification of modal μ-calculus formulae for process algebraic specifications with data. Solving a PBES is usually done by instantiation to a Parity Game and then solving the game. Practical game solvers exist, but the instantiation step is the bottleneck. We enhance the instantiation in two steps. First, we transform the PBES to a Parameterised Parity Game (PPG), a PBES with each equation either conjunctive or disjunctive. Then we use LTSmin, that offers transition caching, efficient storage of states and both distributed and symbolic state space generation, for generating the game graph. To that end we define a language module for LTSmin, consisting of an encoding of variables with parameters into state vectors, a grouped transition relation and a dependency matrix to indicate the dependencies between parts of the state vector and transition groups. Benchmarks on some large case studies, show that the method speeds up the instantiation significantly and decreases memory usage drastically

    Measurement of electron screening in muonic lead

    Energies of the transitions between high-lying (n≥6) states of muonic lead were accurately determined. The results are interpreted as a ∼2% test of the electron screening. The agreement between experiment and theory is good if it is assumed that the refilling of the electron K shell is fast. The present results furthermore severely restrict possible ionization of the electron L shell
