    Triple correlation for detection of damage-related nonlinearities in composite structures

    Nonlinear effects in vibration responses are investigated for the undamaged composite plate and the composite plate with a delamination. The analysis is focused on higher harmonic generation in vibration responses for various excitation amplitude levels. This effect is investigated using the triple correlation technique. The dynamics of composite plate was modelled using two-dimensional finite elements and the classical lamination theory. The doubled-node approach was used to model delamination area. Mode shapes and natural frequencies were estimated based on numerical models. Next, the delamination divergence analysis was used to obtain relative displacements for delaminated plies. Experimental modal analysis test was carried out to verify the numerical models. The two strongest vibration modes as well as two vibration modes with the smallest and largest motion level of delaminated plies were selected for nonlinear vibration test. The Fisher criterion was employed to verify the effectiveness and confidence level of the proposed technique. The results show that the method can be used not only to reveal nonlinearities, but also to reliably detect impact damage in composites. These results are confirmed using the statistical analysis

    Diesel engine fuel injection monitoring using acoustic measurements and independent component analysis

    Air-borne acoustic based condition monitoring is a promising technique because of its intrusive nature and the rich information contained within the acoustic signals including all sources. However, the back ground noise contamination, interferences and the number of Internal Combustion Engine ICE vibro-acoustic sources preclude the extraction of condition information using this technique. Therefore, lower energy events; such as fuel injection, are buried within higher energy events and/or corrupted by background noise. This work firstly investigates diesel engine air-borne acoustic signals characteristics and the benefits of joint time-frequency domain analysis. Secondly, the air-borne acoustic signals in the vicinity of injector head were recorded using three microphones around the fuel injector (120° apart from each other) and an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) based scheme was developed to decompose these acoustic signals. The fuel injection process characteristics were thus revealed in the time-frequency domain using Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) technique. Consequently the energy levels around the injection process period between 11 and 5 degrees before the top dead center and of frequency band 9 to 15 kHz are calculated. The developed technique was validated by simulated signals and empirical measurements at different injection pressure levels from 250 to 210 bars in steps of 10 bars. The recovered energy levels in the tested conditions were found to be affected by the injector pressure settings

    Influence of Sensor Position and Low-Frequency Modal Shape on the Sensitivity of Vibro-Acoustic Modulation for Impact Damage Detection in Composite Materials.

    Very sensitive structural health monitoring methods are needed to detect barely visible impact damage in composite materials. Based on extracting non-linear modulated components from the frequency response of the damaged system, vibro-acoustic modulation (VAM) has shown to be effective in identifying the presence of damage at its early stage. A decisive role in the success of this technique is played by the choice of the high-frequency probe and the low-frequency pump sinusoidal signals that simultaneously excites the system. This study explores how the position of the sensing transducer, with respect to the modal shape of the pump excitation, may influence the sensitivity of the VAM technique for impact damage detection in composite laminates. This aspect has been scarcely investigated in previous research works, as other studies have focused more on the role of the probe frequency. Here, VAM tests were performed on a composite beam by using a frequency-swept pump vibration simultaneously with a high frequency probe excitation. The results of the experimental tests indicate that the VAM technique is capable of clearly revealing the presence of impact damage only when the sensor is placed on appropriate locations, which are directly related to the shape of the deformation activated by the applied excitation. These results suggest the adoption of low frequency excitations that activate multiple modal shapes to improve the effectiveness and reliability of VAM approaches

    AN INNOVATIVE NUMERICAL APPROACH FOR TRAIN PASS-BY NOISE FORECASTING

    This paper deals with an engineering method for the prediction of vehicle pass-by noise based on a FEM/ BEM exterior acoustic calculation in the frequency domain. The researchers simulate, in a virtual environment, the experimental outdoor pass-by noise measurement. The simulated pass-by noise campaign is synthesized from multiple acoustic transfer functions between a line of virtual microphones located 7.5m on the side of the vehicle and each noise source. A numerical FEM/BEM train bogie acoustic model has been created within the MSC ACTRAN commercial softwares. Wheel-rail rolling noise, engine and powertrain noise acoustic source have been implemented and posi-tioned inside the FEM and BEM model to demonstrate the validity of the proposed methods. The contribu-tion from noise sources, expressed both in terms of sound pressure level and overall value, to the pass-by noise were evaluated up to 5 kHz. The virtual pass-by-noise assessment has been then validated by experi-mental measurement of the complete four coach’s train with respect to different speed regimes

    Fluid-structure interaction on the combustion instability

    The multi-domain problem, the limit cycle behaviour of unstable oscillations in the LIMOUSINE model combustor has been investigated by numerical and experimental studies. A strong interaction between the aerodynamics-combustion-acoustic oscillations has been observed during the operation. In this regime, the unsteady heat release by the flame is the acoustic source inducing pressure waves and subsequently the acoustic field acts as a pressure load on the structure. The vibration of the liner walls generates a displacement of the flue gas near the wall inside the combustor which generates an acoustic field proportional to the liner wall acceleration. The two-way interaction between the oscillating pressure load in the fluid and the motion of the structure under the limit cycle oscillation can bring up elevated vibration levels, which accelerates the degradation of liner material at high temperatures. Therefore, fatigue and/or creep lead the failure mechanism. In this paper the time dependent pressures on the liner and corresponding structural velocity amplitudes are calculated by using ANSYS workbench V13.1 software, in which pressure and displacement values have been exchanged between CFD and structural domains transiently creating two-way fluid-structure coupling. The flow of information is sustained between the fluid dynamics and structural dynamics. A validation check has been performed between the numerical pressure and liner velocity results and experimental results. The excitation frequency of the structure in the combustor has been assessed by numerical, analytical and experimental modal analysis in order to distinct the acoustic and structural contribution

    A Review of Structural Health Monitoring Techniques as Applied to Composite Structures.

    Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the process of collecting, interpreting, and analysing data from structures in order to determine its health status and the remaining life span. Composite materials have been extensively use in recent years in several industries with the aim at reducing the total weight of structures while improving their mechanical properties. However, composite materials are prone to develop damage when subjected to low to medium impacts (ie 1 – 10 m/s and 11 – 30 m/s respectively). Hence, the need to use SHM techniques to detect damage at the incipient initiation in composite materials is of high importance. Despite the availability of several SHM methods for the damage identification in composite structures, no single technique has proven suitable for all circumstances. Therefore, this paper offers some updated guidelines for the users of composites on some of the recent advances in SHM applied to composite structures; also, most of the studies reported in the literature seem to have concentrated on the flat composite plates and reinforced with synthetic fibre. There are relatively fewer stories on other structural configurations such as single or double curve structures and hybridised composites reinforced with natural and synthetic fibres as regards SHM

    Structural Health Monitoring in Composite Structures: A Comprehensive Review.

    This study presents a comprehensive review of the history of research and development of different damage-detection methods in the realm of composite structures. Different fields of engineering, such as mechanical, architectural, civil, and aerospace engineering, benefit excellent mechanical properties of composite materials. Due to their heterogeneous nature, composite materials can suffer from several complex nonlinear damage modes, including impact damage, delamination, matrix crack, fiber breakage, and voids. Therefore, early damage detection of composite structures can help avoid catastrophic events and tragic consequences, such as airplane crashes, further demanding the development of robust structural health monitoring (SHM) algorithms. This study first reviews different non-destructive damage testing techniques, then investigates vibration-based damage-detection methods along with their respective pros and cons, and concludes with a thorough discussion of a nonlinear hybrid method termed the Vibro-Acoustic Modulation technique. Advanced signal processing, machine learning, and deep learning have been widely employed for solving damage-detection problems of composite structures. Therefore, all of these methods have been fully studied. Considering the wide use of a new generation of smart composites in different applications, a section is dedicated to these materials. At the end of this paper, some final remarks and suggestions for future work are presented

    Knowledge-based support in Non-Destructive Testing for health monitoring of aircraft structures

    Maintenance manuals include general methods and procedures for industrial maintenance and they contain information about principles of maintenance methods. Particularly, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods are important for the detection of aeronautical defects and they can be used for various kinds of material and in different environments. Conventional non-destructive evaluation inspections are done at periodic maintenance checks. Usually, the list of tools used in a maintenance program is simply located in the introduction of manuals, without any precision as regards to their characteristics, except for a short description of the manufacturer and tasks in which they are employed. Improving the identification concepts of the maintenance tools is needed to manage the set of equipments and establish a system of equivalence: it is necessary to have a consistent maintenance conceptualization, flexible enough to fit all current equipment, but also all those likely to be added/used in the future. Our contribution is related to the formal specification of the system of functional equivalences that can facilitate the maintenance activities with means to determine whether a tool can be substituted for another by observing their key parameters in the identified characteristics. Reasoning mechanisms of conceptual graphs constitute the baseline elements to measure the fit or unfit between an equipment model and a maintenance activity model. Graph operations are used for processing answers to a query and this graph-based approach to the search method is in-line with the logical view of information retrieval. The methodology described supports knowledge formalization and capitalization of experienced NDT practitioners. As a result, it enables the selection of a NDT technique and outlines its capabilities with acceptable alternatives
