Towards a pricing strategy for the South African electricity supply and distribution industry
Bibliography: leaves 253-260.The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a strategy for electricity pricing in the South African electricity supply and distribution industry. To achieve this, the thesis focuses on three specific areas: Electricity pricing theory; past and present electricity pricing in South Africa; and a review of electricity pricing in the United Kingdom, France and Zimbabwe. Using this research as a basis, various thoughts are presented on a pricing strategy for the South African electricity industry. The essence of the strategy is that optimal pricing will occur in a truly competitive industry. The thesis does not seek to prove this hypothesis. Instead a three phase development process is proposed whereby electricity pricing in the South African industry may be transformed from its currently fragmented and decentralised position, to a state in which the force of fair competition will be the prime determinant of the pricing policy of the competing suppliers and distributors

Telecommunications networks for remote electricity supply metering and load control
The aims and objectives of this thesis are to investigate remote electricity supply metering and load control in terms of the now availble UK Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) private and national telecommunications networks, the intelligent building, the home computer and domestic energy management concepts.
This work commences with an overview of private telecommunications systems utilised within the U.K. electricity supply industry together with those network services provided by Public Telecommunications Service Operators (PTO's) for customer access (Chapters 1 and 2). The thesis continues by describing the meter reading and billing processes (Chapter 3) and introduces the concepts of remote metering, the consumer billing interface (Chapters 4 and 5), load control and spot pricing theory (Chapter 6). A review of recent load control and remote metering field trials, conducted in the UK, including feasibility studies are then detailed (Chapter 7). A mathematical analysis of two basic approaches to the principle of 'idle-line' working is also considered (Chapter 7).
The 'intelligent home' concept and the customer billing interface are then considered in conjunction with the development of a 'home computer' applications strategy (Chapter 8). The development of text, communications and control simulation on the BBC microcomputer, are then detailed by reference to the 'Adaptive Microprocessor based System for Experimentation in the Transmission of Text' (AMTEXT) developed to test the feasibility of the home computer applications strategy developed in Chapter 8 (Chapter 9). The concept of 'idle-time working is then introduced coupled with the concept of 'integration' by way of the national telecommunications network services. Proposals for a Modular Integrated Data Aquisition System (MIDAS) are then considered as a means of illustrating a practical application of both integration and idle-time working (Chapter 10).
The thesis continues by considering network integrity, security and reliability in terms of network architecture and the development of a strategy for quantifying network resilience as a design parameter (Chapter 11).
Finally, the thesis concludes by summarisirig the work undertaken and the results obtained with respect to the initial objectives, and details potential areas for further research

Energy cooperation in Southern Africa: What role for Norway?
This Working Paper contains a full report from a Seminar on Regional Energy Co-operation, Luanda, 12-14 February 2002. Norwegian involvement in the energy sector in Southern Africa is considerable. Energy is a major area in Norwegian co-operation and includes a number of countries within SADC. There has been rapid change in the sector, which has moved from being an infrastructure sector to a commodity production sector. Also, the ongoing institutional changes in SADC will have an effect on its relation to energy. The donors' role must change accordingly. Important objectives of the seminar were to discuss the changes in the sector in the region and to improve the level of information in order to make better decisions.
Creating a market: Victorian electric vehicle trial mid-term report
Since the Electric Vehicle trial commenced in October 2010, more than 3,500 people have subscribed to the EV newsletter, 139 charging outlets have been installed across metro Melbourne, and EVs involved in the trial have travelled more than 300,000 kilometres.
The report captures the involvement of more than 80 organisations, 120 Victorian households and around 40 corporate fleets.
The Electric Vehicle trial will run until mid-2014, and there will be more findings to follow once it concludes
An investigation into the costs of active power transmission transactions and methods for evaluation of costs
Includes bibliographical references. The power supply industry of South Africa is currently engaged in the process of restructuring, in a move from traditional vertically integrated and regulated structures to the unbundled, deregulated marketing of electric energy and power. Since this is a new process for South Africa, the investigation was commissioned with the aim of introducing this new area of research, to get an international perspective on the topic, and to build up a theoretical background for further studies. In this new deregulated environment, the transmission segment of the supply industry is seen as an independent business, which can provide services at the appropriate terms and conditions. A transmission utility offers services at costs that can be evaluated by various methods. In this context, the thesis has three objectives. The first objective of the thesis is to consider different types of transmission services and costs associated with these services. The second objective is to analyse existing methods for evaluation of costs of transmission transactions and to define advantages and drawbacks of these methods. The third objective of the thesis is to test selected methods for illustration by means of case studies
Information Society, Work and the Generation of New Forms of Social Exclusion (SOWING): National Report (Portugal)
The choice over the Portuguese case studies was based on the sample constructed for the application of the firm questionnaires, during the second year of the SOWING project, 1999. This sample was fulfilled of firms among several activity sectors: textile, manufacturing, electronics, transports and software industry, based on NACE – codes (2 – digit level). Thus, we agreed to include in a new database the remaining questionnaires and construct a sample with 113 observations. Concerning the organisational change we make a distinction of three categories of change. First we analyse changes taking place at the inter-firm level (outsourcing, subcontracting, geographic relocation), followed by changes at the organisational level (deconcentration/decentralisation, reduction of hierarchical levels, introduction of cost and profit centres). The third kind of changes analysed will be those taking place at the workplace level (job enlargement/enrichment, changing character of work, work load). The Portuguese studied companies presents a relative uniform pattern considering the variables social competencies, practical knowledge, responsibility and specialized professional qualifications.industry; information technologies; qualification; organisation; work
