Potential Replacement of the US Navy\u27s Rapid Penetration Test with the Method of Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves

Get PDF
The United States Navy (USN) currently utilizes a Rapid Penetration Test (RPT) on both land and in water as the means to determine whether sufficient soil bearing capacity exists for piles in axial compression, prior to construction of the Elevated Causeway System (Modular) [ELCAS(M)] pile-supported pier system. The USN desires a replacement for the RPT because of issues with the method incorrectly classifying soils as well as the need to have a less labor-and-equipment-intensive method for geotechnical investigation. The Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) method is selected herein as the potential replacement for the RPT. The MASW method is an existing, geophysical method for determining soil properties based upon the acquisition and analysis of seismic surface waves used to develop shear wave velocity profiles for the soils at specific sites. Correlations between shear wave velocity and Cone Penetration Testing are utilized to classify soils, develop pile blow count estimates, and calculate soil bearing capacity. This researcher found that the MASW method was feasible and reliable in predicting the required properties for terrestrial sites. However, it was not successful in predicting those properties for underwater marine sites due to issues with equipment and field setup. Future areas of improvement are recommended to address these issues and, due to the success of the method on land, it is expected that once the issues are addressed the MASW method will be a reliable replacement for the RPT method across the entire subaerial and subaqueous profile

Delay Bound: Fractal Traffic Passes through Network Servers

Get PDF
Delay analysis plays a role in real-time systems in computer communication networks. This paper gives our results in the aspect of delay analysis of fractal traffic passing through servers. There are three contributions presented in this paper. First, we will explain the reasons why conventional theory of queuing systems ceases in the general sense when arrival traffic is fractal. Then, we will propose a concise method of delay computation for hard real-time systems as shown in this paper. Finally, the delay computation of fractal traffic passing through severs is presented

Simulation of queue with cyclic service in signalized intersection system

Get PDF
The simulation was implemented by modeling the queue with cyclic service in the signalized intersection system. The service policies used in this study were exhaustive and gated, the model was the M/M/1 queue, the arrival rate used was Poisson distribution and the services rate used was Exponential distribution. In the gated service policy, the server served only vehicles that came before the green signal appears at an intersection. Considered that there were 2 types of exhaustive policy in the signalized intersection system, namely normal exhaustive (vehicles only served during the green signal was still active), and exhaustive (there was the green signal duration addition at the intersection, when the green signal duration at an intersection finished). The results of this queueing simulation program were to obtain characteristics and performance of the system, i.e. average number of vehicles and waiting time of vehicles in the intersection and in the system, as well as system utilities. Then from these values, it would be known which of the cyclic service policies (normal exhaustive, exhaustive and gated) was the most suitable when applied to a signalized intersection syste

The 30/20 GHz fixed communications systems service demand assessment. Volume 2: Main report

Get PDF
A forecast of demand for telecommunications services through the year 2000 is presented with particular reference to demand for satellite communications. Estimates of demand are provided for voice, video, and data services and for various subcategories of these services. The results are converted to a common digital measure in terms of terabits per year and aggregated to obtain total demand projections

Polling models with multi-phase gated service

Get PDF
In this paper we introduce and analyze a new class of service policies called multi-phase gated service. This policy is a generalization of the classical single-phase and two-phase gated policies and works as follows. Each customer that arrives at queue i will have to wait K_i cycles before it receives service. The aim of this policy is to provide an interleaving scheme to avoid monopolization of the system by heavily loaded queues, by choosing the proper values of interleaving levels Ki. In this paper, we analyze the effectiveness of the interleaving scheme on the queueing behavior of the system, and consider the problem of identifying the proper combination of interleaving levels (K_1,...,K_N) that minimizes a weighted sum of the mean waiting times at each of the N queues. Obviously, the proper choice of the interleaving levels is most critical when the system is heavily loaded. For this reason, we to obtain closed-form expressions for the asymptotic waiting-time distributions in heavy trafficc, and use these expressions to derive simple heuristics for approximating the optimal interleaving scheme. Numerical results with simulations demonstrate that the accuracy of these approximations is extremely high

Innovative Tools For Planning, Analysis, and Management of UAV Photogrammetric Surveys

Get PDF
The Unmanned Aerial System (UAV) is widely used in the photogrammetric surveys both for structures and small areas. The geomatics approach, for the several applications where the 3D modeling is required, focuses the attention on the metric quality of the final products of the survey. As widely known, the quality of results derives from the quality of images acquisition phase, which needs an accurate planning phase. Actually, the planning phase is typically managed using dedicated tools, adapted from the traditional aerial-photogrammetric flight plan. Unfortunately, UAV flight has features completely different from the traditional one, hence the use of UAV for photogrammetric applications today requires a growth in the planning knowledge. The basic idea of the present research work is to provide a tool for planning a photogrammetric survey with UAV, called “Unmanned Photogrammetric Office” (U.Ph.O.), that considers the morphology of the object, the effective visibility of its surface, in the respect of the metric precisions. The usual planning tools require the classical parameters of a photogrammetric planning: flight distance from the surface, images overlaps and geometric parameters of the camera. The created “Office suite” U.Ph.O. allows a realistic planning of a photogrammetric survey, requiring additionally an approximate knowledge of the Digital Surface Model (DSM) and the attitude parameters, potentially changing along the route. The planning products will be the realistic overlapping of the images, the Ground Sample Distance (GSD) and the precision on each pixel taking into account the real geometry. The different tested procedures, the solution proposed to estimates the realistic precisions in the particular case of UAV surveys and the obtained results, are described in this thesis work, with an overview on the recently development of UAV surveys and technologies related to them
