    Exact and Heuristic Algorithms for Risk-Aware Stochastic Physical Search

    We consider an intelligent agent seeking to obtain an item from one of several physical locations, where the cost to obtain the item at each location is stochastic. We study risk-aware stochastic physical search (RA-SPS), where both the cost to travel and the cost to obtain the item are taken from the same budget and where the objective is to maximize the probability of success while minimizing the required budget. This type of problem models many task-planning scenarios, such as space exploration, shopping, or surveillance. In these types of scenarios, the actual cost of completing an objective at a location may only be revealed when an agent physically arrives at the location, and the agent may need to use a single resource to both search for and acquire the item of interest. We present exact and heuristic algorithms for solving RA-SPS problems on complete metric graphs. We first formulate the problem as mixed integer linear programming problem. We then develop custom branch and bound algorithms that result in a dramatic reduction in computation time. Using these algorithms, we generate empirical insights into the hardness landscape of the RA-SPS problem and compare the performance of several heuristics

    Risk-Aware Planning for Sensor Data Collection

    With the emergence of low-cost unmanned air vehicles, civilian and military organizations are quickly identifying new applications for affordable, large-scale collectives to support and augment human efforts via sensor data collection. In order to be viable, these collectives must be resilient to the risk and uncertainty of operating in real-world environments. Previous work in multi-agent planning has avoided planning for the loss of agents in environments with risk. In contrast, this dissertation presents a problem formulation that includes the risk of losing agents, the effect of those losses on the mission being executed, and provides anticipatory planning algorithms that consider risk. We conduct a thorough analysis of the effects of risk on path-based planning, motivating new solution methods. We then use hierarchical clustering to generate risk-aware plans for a variable number of agents, outperforming traditional planning methods. Next, we provide a mechanism for distributed negotiation of stable plans, utilizing coalitional game theory to provide cost allocation methods that we prove to be fair and stable. Centralized planning with redundancy is then explored, planning for parallel task completion to mitigate risk and provide further increased expected value. Finally, we explore the role of cost uncertainty as additional source of risk, using bi-objective optimization to generate sets of alternative plans. We demonstrate the capability of our algorithms on randomly generated problem instances, showing an improvement over traditional multi-agent planning methods as high as 500% on very large problem instances

    Solving school bus routing and student assignment problems with heuristic and column generation approach.

    In this dissertation, we solve a school bus routing problem of transporting students including special education (handicapped) students and assigning them in Oldham county education district. The main contribution of this research is that we consider special education students (Type-2) along with other students (Type-1) and design a comprehensive school bus schedule to transport both kinds of students at the same time. Also, a student assignment mathematical model is presented to optimize the number of bus stops in use as well as one important measure of service quality, the total student walking distance. Comparing to the classic clustering methods, heuristic methods, or other methods from previous literatures, a mathematical optimization model is developed to solve a student assignment problem and to obtain the global optimal solution. The modeling constraints include budget limit, travel time limit, equity, school time window, and etc. Especially, the main difference between our model and other models is that it takes Type-2 students into consideration along with critical constraints accordingly, and solves the resulting more complex problem. Moreover, the school bus routing model in this work is one of the most general optimization models representing the school bus routing problem. On the other hand, similar to all existing models, the developed model considers the total system cost as the objective function value to minimize, different bus capacities, and common vehicle routing constraints such as flow conservation on routes and subtour elimination. Furthermore, another main difference is that the bus scheduling and school time window is also considered and solved in the model. With two different types of students, both Type-1 and Type-2, the time restrictions are varying, resulting in more complexity and additional constraints. The results in this work present the difficulties of meeting the requirement of Type-2 student riding time limit and school time window simultaneously. Also, the constraints regarding service equity and quality are provided and they can be used by decision makers if necessary. Either densely populated urban areas or sparsely populated rural areas, the school bus routing problem is difficult to solve due to a large number of students or long travel distance. The school bus routing problem falls under vehicle routing problem (VRP) with additional requirements because each student represents one unit of capacity. In this dissertation, we present a modeling framework that solves a student assignment problem with bus stop selection, and subsequently a school bus routing problem with school time window constraints. We demonstrate the efficacy of heuristic methods as well as a column generation technique implemented to solve the problems using real data

    Mathematical formulations and optimization algorithms for solving rich vehicle routing problems.

    Objectives and methods of study: The main objective of this work is to analyze and solve three different rich selective Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs). The first problem is a bi-objective variant of the well-known Traveling Purchaser Problem (TPP) in which the purchased products are delivered to customers. This variant aims to find a route for which the total cost (transportation plus purchasing costs) and the sum of the customers’s waiting time are simultaneously minimized. A mixed integer bi-objective programming formulation of the problem is presented and tested with CPLEX 12.6 within an ǫ-constraint framework which fails to find non-dominated solutions for instances containing more than 10 nodes. Therefore, a heuristic based on relinked local search and Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) is proposed to approximate the Pareto front for large instances. The proposed heuristic was tested over a large set of artificial instances of the problem. Computational results over small-sized instances show that the heuristic is competitive with the ǫ-constraint method. Also, computational tests over large-sized instances were carried out in order to study how the characteristics of the instances impact the algorithm performance. The second problem consists of planning a selective delivery schedule of multiple products. The problem is modeled as a multi-product split delivery capacitated team orienteering problem with incomplete services, and soft time windows. The problem is modeled through a mixed integer linear programming formulation and approximated by means of a multi-start Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) metaheuristic. Computational results show that the multi-start metaheuristic reaches better results than its classical implementation in which a single solution is build and then improved. Finally, an Orienteering Problem (OP) with mandatory visits and conflicts, is formulated through five mixed integer linear programming models. The main difference among them lies in the way they handle the subtour elimination constraints. The models were tested over a large set of instances of the problem. Computational experiments reveal that the model which subtour elimination constraints are based on a single-commodity flow formulation allows CPLEX 12.6 to obtain the optimal solution for more instances than the other formulations within a given computation time limit. Contributions: The main contributions of this thesis are: • The introduction of the bi-objective TPP with deliveries since few bi-objective versions of the TPP have been studied in the literature. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, there is only one more work that takes into account deliveries in a TPP. • The design and implementation of a hybrid heuristic based on relinked local search and VNS to solve the bi-objective TPP with deliveries. Additionally, we provide guidelines for the application of the heuristic when different characteristics of the instances are observed. • The design and implementation of a multi-start adaptive large neighborhood search to solve a selective delivery schedule problem. • The experimental comparison among different formulations for an OP with mandatory nodes and conflicts

    Cal Poly WOW: Week of Welcome’s Leader Android Application

    The Week of Welcome Android application aims to improve the efficiency and ease at which Orientation Leaders function during the week long program designed to aid in new studentassimilation to the San Luis Obispo campus and community. It focuses on four utilities combined inone easy location that Leaders use on a regular basis. They are maps, the online guidebook, budget keeper, and contact list. These four utilities are commonly used by Leaders in their day to dayguidance of new students, making one single application with each tool very desirable to the WOW Program.Currently there are no alternatives for Orientation Leaders at Cal Poly to use, except the possibility of utilizing four individual applications available either through the Android market or the internet. The origin of this project comes from many years of personal involvement in almost everyaspect of the Program, from new student to Executive Board as well as the input from many current participants.The initial functionality of the WOW Application comes from four of the top needed utilities asked for by Orientation Leaders throughout the years. Because of time constraints, not every need can be serviced through this application. Instead, the goal was to get a start on a continuously growing WOW application that would keep improving the functionality of Leaders as they guide incoming freshman. After selecting the functions this project will aim to complete, the next step involves the implementation of the code required to accomplish these four tasks. This code will be broken up into four smaller programs that the main program will call when each is selected.Lastly, testing becomes a major factor in judging the success rate of the application. The tests will be administered to a select group of individuals that will directly relate to the needs serviced with this utility. Getting feedback from these users generates the next steps to producing the “perfect” WOW utility app

    Linking loss aversion and present bias with overspending behaviour of tourists: insights from a lab-in-the-field experiment

    Building upon Prospect Theory and Hyperbolic Time Discounting models, we explore how behavioral factors influence the probability of overspending among outbound leisure travelers. We construct our data in two steps. First, we collect demographics and travel-related variables from a random sample of 314 Singaporean tourists across different age groups and income levels. Second, we conduct a field experiment to measure their risk and time preferences, specifically loss aversion and present bias. We then explore the link between the measured preferences to overspending behaviour. The findings reveal an interesting link between loss aversion, present bias and traveling expenditure patterns: outbound tourists with high loss aversion and high present bias are more likely to overspend. Finally, our study also highlights the role of group identity in de-biasing. Specifically, individuals are more likely to behave according to standard economic models when making decisions in groups

    A New Hybrid Parallel Simulated Annealing Algorithm for Travelling Salesman Problem with Multiple Transporters

    In today’s competitive transportation systems, passengers search to find traveling agencies that are able to serve them efficiently considering both traveling time and transportation costs. In this paper, we present a new model for the traveling salesman problem with multiple transporters (TSPMT). In the proposed model, which is more applicable than the traditional versions, each city has different transporting vehicles and the cost of travel through each city is dependent on the transporting vehicles type. The aim is to determine an optimal sequence of visited cities with minimum traveling times by available transporting vehicles within a limited budget. First, the mathematical model of TSPMT is presented. Next, since the problem is NP-hard, a new hybrid parallel simulated annealing algorithm with a new coding scheme is proposed. To analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, 50 numerical examples with different budget types are examined and solved using the algorithm. The computational results of these comparisons show that the algorithm is an excellent approach in speed and solution quality
