Performance of DA/FDMA architecture proposed for MSS

    Get PDF
The system architecture proposed for the Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/JPL is presented. The demand assigned Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) scheme is described, and results for the associated network access protocol developed by JPL are presented. Both the total number of users that the system can support and the system spectral efficiency are given for a variety of traffic conditions, including those postulated for the Mobile Satellite System Architectures and Multiple Access Techniques Workshop. The results are given for both first- and second-generation one- and two-satellite systems

Comparison of a Calan gate and a conventional feed barrier system for dairy cows: feed intake and cow behaviour

peer-reviewedThere is little published information on comparisons of individual and group feeding systems for dairy cows. Twenty-four dairy cows were used in a three-period incompletely balanced, change-over design study, to examine food intake and feeding behaviour of dairy cows offered their food via group-access electronic Calan gates, or via a conventional feed-barrier system. The food offered was in the form of a complete diet, and comprised grass silage and concentrates (60:40 dry matter (DM) basis). With the conventional feed-barrier system a maximum of eight animals were able to feed at any one time, while the Calan-gate system allowed a maximum of three animals to feed at any one time. Method of offering the ration had no effect on daily DM intake. During the 8-h period after animals were given access to fresh food, the mean number of animals feeding at any one time was 5.4 and 3.0 for the conventional and Calan-gate systems, respectively, while total intake over this period was 11.0 and 9.2 kg DM per cow, respectively. When access to feed was restricted by the use of Calan gates, animals responded by increasing their intake rate. It is concluded that total DM intake was unaffected by the use of a group Calan-gate feeding system as animals modified their feeding behaviour to maintain food intake

Creation and implementation of customised production scheduling software in a processed cheese factory : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology in Manufacturing and Industrial Technology at Massey University

This project investigated creating computer algorithms and friendly software interfaces to assist with the scheduling of single stage operations with sequence dependant set-ups and crew rostering problems across multiple lines. Various techniques and approaches were investigated for reducing the total solution space including, grouping similar items and orders and bucket scheduling. The principles of the Goldratt Method of Scheduling were used. A Tabu Search algorithm was implemented to search for solutions where total make-span was minimised and probability of missing orders was taken into account in an unreliable production system. Microsoft Access and Microsoft Visual Basic were used to create a stand alone application that interfaced with a Manufacturing Resource Planning system

Patient and Health System Experience With Implementation of an Enterprise-Wide Telehealth Scheduled Video Visit Program: Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Real-time video visits are increasingly used to provide care in a number of settings because they increase access and convenience of care, yet there are few reports of health system experiences. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to report health system and patient experiences with implementation of a telehealth scheduled video visit program across a health system. METHODS: This is a mixed methods study including (1) a retrospective descriptive report of implementation of a telehealth scheduled visit program at one large urban academic-affiliated health system and (2) a survey of patients who participated in scheduled telehealth visits. Health system and patient-reported survey measures were aligned with the National Quality Forum telehealth measure reporting domains of access, experience, and effectiveness of care. RESULTS: This study describes implementation of a scheduled synchronous video visit program over an 18-month period. A total of 3018 scheduled video visits were completed across multiple clinical departments. Patient experiences were captured in surveys of 764 patients who participated in telehealth visits. Among survey respondents, 91.6% (728/795) reported satisfaction with the scheduled visits and 82.7% (628/759) reported perceived quality similar to an in-person visit. A total of 86.0% (652/758) responded that use of the scheduled video visit made it easier to get care. Nearly half (46.7%, 346/740) of patients estimated saving 1 to 3 hours and 40.8% (302/740) reported saving more than 3 hours of time. The net promoter score, a measure of patient satisfaction, was very high at 52. CONCLUSIONS: A large urban multihospital health system implemented an enterprise-wide scheduled telehealth video visit program across a range of clinical specialties with a positive patient experience. Patients found use of scheduled video visits made it easier to get care and the majority perceived time saved, suggesting that use of telehealth for scheduled visits can improve potential access to care across a range of clinical scenarios with favorable patient experiences

Control of energy density inside disordered medium by coupling to open or closed channels

We demonstrate experimentally an efficient control of light intensity distribution inside a random scattering system. The adaptive wavefront shaping technique is applied to a silicon waveguide containing scattering nanostructures, and the on-chip coupling scheme enables access to all input spatial modes. By selectively coupling the incident light to open or closed channels of the disordered system, we not only vary the total energy stored inside the system by 7.4 times, but also change the energy density distribution from an exponential decay to a linear decay and to a profile peaked near the center. This work provides an on-chip platform for controlling light-matter interactions in turbid media

General specifications for the development of a PC-based simulator of the NASA RECON system

    Get PDF
The general specifications for the design and implementation of an IBM PC/XT-based simulator of the NASA RECON system, including record designs, file structure designs, command language analysis, program design issues, error recovery considerations, and usage monitoring facilities are discussed. Once implemented, such a simulator will be utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of simulated information system access in addition to actual system usage as part of the total educational programs being developed within the NASA contract
