Het Midden-Oosten: the times they are a-changing

The times they are a changing - post qualifying training needs of social work managers

    Get PDF
The article will focus on the changing role of social work managers in the light of recent legislation and policy; the integration agenda; the changing relationship between statutory and voluntary agencies; and the rising expectations of service users and carers. It will link these changes to the ongoing political and societal context in which social work is practised. The importance of effective social work management will be emphasised in the context of the recent enquiries into the deaths and long-term abuse of service users. It will consider the issues for training and development of social work managers and will conclude by considering the issues for providers of training and development, with particular reference to post qualifying academic social work management courses. It will highlight the types of learning experiences social work managers require, outline consultations with students and agencies, and suggest issues for the future

“The Times They are a Changing” 1 : Undertaking Qualitative Research in Ambiguous, Conflictual, and Changing Contexts

This article explores qualitative research issues that arise when researchers engage in study within their own ambiguous, unstable, conflictual, and rapidly changing society. We explore the topics of the relationship between the researcher and the context, the difficulty in choosing relevant research quest ions under such conditions, and the relevance of generalizing or transferring findings from such contexts to other sites and populations. We present two research cases from the Israeli context: one that demonstrates an external conflict (between Israelis and Palestinians) and one that demonstrates an internal conflict (between Israelis and Israelis), analyzing them according to these three main issues. Our conclusions focus on the methodological implications that researching one’s ambiguous and conflictual “backyard” have for qualitative researchers

The Times They are (Not?) A-Changing: Recent Trends of Knowledge Management Literature

After almost 3 decades, the literature on knowledge management (KM) has gained importance. Today, many journals and international conferences are explicitly oriented to KM research, and many others propose special issues or special tracks on KM. The increasing number of studies and publications raises the question of what direction KM research is taking. This paper aims to explore the current trends in KM research by providing an analysis of the literature. It is based on two sources of data: first, some existing reviews of the KM literature, with the goal to analyse if these studies converge towards consistent conclusions; second, the proceedings of a long-running and popular international Conference on KM (the European Conference on Knowledge Management), where a quantitative analysis was carried out to understand the main streams in this field of study. The overall picture is that of a field of study with a flourishing literature and lively debate, but that it is still struggling to define its \u201cidentity\u201d

The New Techie: The Times They Are A-Changing, and Techies Along with Them

It’s great to be a former English teacher working in the world of technology — although it hasn’t always been pretty. When I first started working in technology (in the late 1980s), techies greeted me with wary disdain. I didn’t know the lingo, I didn’t live to be the first to know about the next hardware release, and my idea of a good time on Saturday night was to spend time with a warm, breathing being, not a keyboard and a screen. Furthermore, I was much too verbal, too in-your-face. I lacked that certain je ne c’est quoi, that cool detachment so apparent in most techies with whom I worked at the beginning of this adventure

The Times They Are A-Changing: Generational Renewal and Political Transformations in France

    Get PDF
The impact of generational renewal on political and civic life is often neglected in public and scientific debates. The disinterest is due, among other things, to the contributions and overall pervasiveness of research on primary socialization and life-cycle effects, as well as a tendency in research to adopt a Mannheimian perspective on political generations. In fact, cohort analysis of French self-placement on the left or right of the political spectrum since the 1970s brings to light major changes. Generational renewal is not politically neutral: it handicaps the right while bringing about an increase in the proportion of “non-aligned.” Moreover, studying generational renewal reveals a profound transformation of the notions of left and right in France, due to the new importance of cultural issues and redefined attitudes toward politics generally and voting in particular
