de Sitter gravity from lattice gauge theory

    Get PDF
We investigate a lattice model for Euclidean quantum gravity based on discretization of the Palatini formulation of General Relativity. Using Monte Carlo simulation we show that while a naive approach fails to lead to a vacuum state consistent with the emergence of classical spacetime, this problem may be evaded if the lattice action is supplemented by an appropriate counter term. In this new model we find regions of the parameter space which admit a ground state which can be interpreted as (Euclidean) de Sitter space.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. email address update

An extension of the characteristic angle method to the easy-plane spin-3/2 ferromagnet

The Characteristic Angle (CA) method [Lei Zhou and Ruibao Tao, J. Phys. A, {\bf 27} 5599] developed previously for the easy-plane spin-1 magnetic systems has been successfully extended to the spin-3/2 case. A compact form of the CA spin-3/2 operator transformation is given, then the ground state energy, the magnon dispersion relation and the spontaneous magnetization are discussed for an easy-plane spin-3/2 ferromagnet by using the CA method. Comparisons with the old theoretical methods are made in the end.Comment: LaTex formatted. To be published in the forthcoming issue of Physics Letters A (1996). 3 figures. Read, White, and Blue: Prosecutors Reading Inmate Emails and the Attorney-Client Privilege, 48 J. Marshall L. Rev. 1119 (2015)

This Comment addresses whether the attorney-client privilege should extend to emails exchanged between an inmate and his or her attorney over TRULINCS, the prison email system. Section II describes the history of the attorney-client privilege, and compares and contrasts the federal privilege with the New York state privilege in order to directly address Dr. Ahmed’s conflict. Section III juxtaposes other forms of privileged attorney-client contact with inmate emailing, and discusses the confidentiality agreement provided through the prison email system, TRULINCS. Finally, Section IV proposes a fiscally responsible, efficient, and convenient solution to the possible extension of the attorney-client privilege to inmate email

The use of electronic mail in the communication practices of community colleges : an evaluation of current practice between faculty and administration

Electronic mail is one of most popular uses of information technology. This study examined the use, fit and effect of email communication within thirteen community colleges in Tennessee. Four specific research questions were addressed: 1) How is email being used in faculty/administration communication within community colleges in the state of Tennessee? 2) Are there differences in the way email is used for communication between faculty in different disciplines and their administrators? 3) Is email communication changing access of faculty to administrators and vice versa at the community college level in Tennessee? 4) Do faculty and administrators perceive that the processes of professional communication are being changed by email? The researcher created a survey for the assessment of the research questions. The survey instrument was distributed to a sample of administrators and faculty from each of the thirteen institutions during the spring semester 2002. The responses to the survey were analyzed to address the research questions

Attribute Exploration of Discrete Temporal Transitions

Discrete temporal transitions occur in a variety of domains, but this work is mainly motivated by applications in molecular biology: explaining and analyzing observed transcriptome and proteome time series by literature and database knowledge. The starting point of a formal concept analysis model is presented. The objects of a formal context are states of the interesting entities, and the attributes are the variable properties defining the current state (e.g. observed presence or absence of proteins). Temporal transitions assign a relation to the objects, defined by deterministic or non-deterministic transition rules between sets of pre- and postconditions. This relation can be generalized to its transitive closure, i.e. states are related if one results from the other by a transition sequence of arbitrary length. The focus of the work is the adaptation of the attribute exploration algorithm to such a relational context, so that questions concerning temporal dependencies can be asked during the exploration process and be answered from the computed stem base. Results are given for the abstract example of a game and a small gene regulatory network relevant to a biomedical question.Comment: Only the email address and reference have been replace

Spin-one ferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy in a perpendicular external field

In this paper, the conventional Holstein-Primakoff method is generalized with the help of the characteristic angle transformation [Lei Zhou and Ruibao Tao, J. Phys. A {\bf 27} 5599 (1994)] for the spin-one magnetic systems with single-ion anisotropies. We find that the weakness of the conventional method for such systems can be overcome by the new approach. Two models will be discussed to illuminate the main idea, which are the ``easy-plane" and the ``easy-axis" spin-one ferromagnet, respectively. Comparisons show that the current approach can give reasonable ground state properties for the magnetic system with ``easy-plane" anisotropy though the conventional method never can, and can give a better representation than the conventional one for the magnetic system with ``easy-axis" anisotropy though the latter is usually believed to be a good approximation in such case. Study of the easy-plane model shows that there is a phase transition induced by the external field, and the low-temperature specific heat may have a peak as the field reaches the critical value.Comment: Using LaTex.
