Implementation of Automatic DC Motor Braking PID Control System on (Disc Brakes)
The vital role of an automated braking system in ensuring the safety of motorized vehicles and their passengers cannot be overstated. It simplifies the braking process during driving, enhancing control and reducing the chances of accidents. This study is centered on the design of an automatic braking device for DC motors utilizing disc brakes. The instrument employed in this study was designed to accelerate the vehicle in two primary scenarios - before the collision with an obstacle and upon crossing the safety threshold. It achieves this by implementing the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control method. A significant part of this system comprises ultrasonic sensors, used for detecting the distance to obstructions, and rotary encoder sensors, which are utilized to measure the motor's rotational speed. These distance and speed readings serve as essential reference points for the braking process. The system is engineered to initiate braking when the distance value equals or falls below 60cm or when the speed surpasses 8000rpm. During such events, the disc brake is activated to reduce the motor's rotary motion. The suppression of the disc brake lever is executed pneumatically, informed by the sensor readings. Applying the PID method to the automatic braking system improved braking outcomes compared to a system without the PID method. This was proven by more effective braking results when the sensors detected specific distance and speed values. Numerous PID tuning tests achieved optimal results with K_p = 5, K_i = 1, and K_d = 3. These values can be integrated into automatic braking systems for improved performance. The PID method yielded more responsive braking outcomes when applied in distance testing. On the contrary, the braking results were largely unchanged in the absence of PID. Regarding speed testing, the PID method significantly improved the slowing down of the motor speed when it exceeded the maximum speed limit of 8000 rpm. This eliminates the possibility of sudden braking, thus maintaining the system within a safe threshold. The average time taken by the system to apply braking was 01.09 seconds, an indication of its quick responsiveness. This research is a valuable addition to control science, applying the PID control method to automatic DC motor braking. It provides valuable insights and concrete applications of PID control to complex mechatronic systems. It is also noteworthy for its development and optimization of suitable PID parameters to achieve responsive and stable braking. The study, therefore, offers a profound understanding of how PID control can be employed to manage braking systems on automatic DC motors, thereby advancing knowledge and application of control in control science and mechatronics
Proceedings of SIRM 2023 - The 15th European Conference on Rotordynamics
It was our great honor and pleasure to host the SIRM Conference after 2003 and 2011 for the third time in Darmstadt. Rotordynamics covers a huge variety of different applications and challenges which are all in the scope of this conference. The conference was opened with a keynote lecture given by Rainer Nordmann, one of the three founders of SIRM “Schwingungen in rotierenden Maschinen”. In total 53 papers passed our strict review process and were presented. This impressively shows that rotordynamics is relevant as ever. These contributions cover a very wide spectrum of session topics: fluid bearings and seals; air foil bearings; magnetic bearings; rotor blade interaction; rotor fluid interactions; unbalance and balancing; vibrations in turbomachines; vibration control; instability; electrical machines; monitoring, identification and diagnosis; advanced numerical tools and nonlinearities as well as general rotordynamics. The international character of the conference has been significantly enhanced by the Scientific Board since the 14th SIRM resulting on one hand in an expanded Scientific Committee which meanwhile consists of 31 members from 13 different European countries and on the other hand in the new name “European Conference on Rotordynamics”. This new international profile has also been
emphasized by participants of the 15th SIRM coming from 17 different countries out of three continents. We experienced a vital discussion and dialogue between industry and academia at the conference where roughly one third of the papers were presented by industry and two thirds by academia being an excellent basis to follow a bidirectional transfer what we call xchange at Technical University of Darmstadt. At this point we also want to give our special thanks to the eleven industry sponsors for their great support of the conference. An MPC-based Optimal Motion Control Framework for Pendulum-driven Spherical Robots
Motion control is essential for all autonomous mobile robots, and even more
so for spherical robots. Due to the uniqueness of the spherical robot, its
motion control must not only ensure accurate tracking of the target commands,
but also minimize fluctuations in the robot's attitude and motors' current
while tracking. In this paper, model predictive control (MPC) is applied to the
control of spherical robots and an MPC-based motion control framework is
designed. There are two controllers in the framework, an optimal velocity
controller ESO-MPC which combines extend states observers (ESO) and MPC, and an
optimal orientation controller that uses multilayer perceptron (MLP) to
generate accurate trajectories and MPC with changing weights to achieve optimal
control. Finally, the performance of individual controllers and the whole
control framework are verified by physical experiments. The experimental
results show that the MPC-based motion control framework proposed in this work
is much better than PID in terms of rapidity and accuracy, and has great
advantages over sliding mode controller (SMC) for overshoot, attitude

Technology for Low Resolution Space Based RSO Detection and Characterisation
Space Situational Awareness (SSA) refers to all activities to detect, identify and track objects in Earth orbit. SSA is critical to all current and future space activities and protect space assets by providing access control, conjunction warnings, and monitoring status of active satellites. Currently SSA methods and infrastructure are not sufficient to account for the proliferations of space debris. In response to the need for better SSA there has been many different areas of research looking to improve SSA most of the requiring dedicated ground or space-based infrastructure. In this thesis, a novel approach for the characterisation of RSO’s (Resident Space Objects) from passive low-resolution space-based sensors is presented with all the background work performed to enable this novel method. Low resolution space-based sensors are common on current satellites, with many of these sensors being in space using them passively to detect RSO’s can greatly augment SSA with out expensive infrastructure or long lead times. One of the largest hurtles to overcome with research in the area has to do with the lack of publicly available labelled data to test and confirm results with. To overcome this hurtle a simulation software, ORBITALS, was created. To verify and validate the ORBITALS simulator it was compared with the Fast Auroral Imager images, which is one of the only publicly available low-resolution space-based images found with auxiliary data. During the development of the ORBITALS simulator it was found that the generation of these simulated images are computationally intensive when propagating the entire space catalog. To overcome this an upgrade of the currently used propagation method, Specialised General Perturbation Method 4th order (SGP4), was performed to allow the algorithm to run in parallel reducing the computational time required to propagate entire catalogs of RSO’s. From the results it was found that the standard facet model with a particle swarm optimisation performed the best estimating an RSO’s attitude with a 0.66 degree RMSE accuracy across a sequence, and ~1% MAPE accuracy for the optical properties. This accomplished this thesis goal of demonstrating the feasibility of low-resolution passive RSO characterisation from space-based platforms in a simulated environment
Fuzzy-Immune-Regulated Adaptive Degree-of-Stability LQR for a Self-Balancing Robotic Mechanism: Design and HIL Realization
This letter formulates a fuzzy-immune adaptive system for the online adjustment of the Degree-of-Stability (DoS) of Linear-Quadratic-Regulator (LQR) procedure to strengthen the disturbance attenuation capacity of a self-balancing mechatronic system. The fuzzy-immune adaptive system uses pre-configured control input-based rules to alter the DoS parameter of LQR for dynamically relocating the closed-loop system's eigenvalues in the complex plane's left half. The corresponding changes in the eigenvalues are conveyed to the Riccati equation, which eventually yields the self-adjusting LQR gains. This arrangement allows for the flexible manipulation of the applied control effort and the response speed as the error conditions change. The efficacies of the self-tuning LQR scheme are verified by performing custom-designed hardware-in-the-loop experiments on the Quanser rotary inverted pendulum system. As compared to the DoS-LQR, the proposed controller improves the pendulum's transient recovery time, overshoots, input demands, and offsets by 32.3%, 50.5%, 33.9%, and 33.3%, respectively, under disturbances. These experimental outcomes verify that the proposed self-tuning LQR law considerably improves the system's disturbance attenuation capability
Contributions to improve the technologies supporting unmanned aircraft operations
Mención Internacional en el título de doctorUnmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in their smaller versions known as drones, are becoming increasingly important in today's societies. The systems that make them up present a multitude of challenges, of which error can be considered the common denominator. The perception of the environment is measured by sensors that have errors, the models that interpret the information and/or define behaviors are approximations of the world and therefore also have errors. Explaining error allows extending the limits of deterministic models to address real-world problems. The performance of the technologies embedded in drones depends on our ability to understand, model, and control the error of the systems that integrate them, as well as new technologies that may emerge.
Flight controllers integrate various subsystems that are generally dependent on other systems. One example is the guidance systems. These systems provide the engine's propulsion controller with the necessary information to accomplish a desired mission. For this purpose, the flight controller is made up of a control law for the guidance system that reacts to the information perceived by the perception and navigation systems. The error of any of the subsystems propagates through the ecosystem of the controller, so the study of each of them is essential.
On the other hand, among the strategies for error control are state-space estimators, where the Kalman filter has been a great ally of engineers since its appearance in the 1960s. Kalman filters are at the heart of information fusion systems, minimizing the error covariance of the system and allowing the measured states to be filtered and estimated in the absence of observations. State Space Models (SSM) are developed based on a set of hypotheses for modeling the world. Among the assumptions are that the models of the world must be linear, Markovian, and that the error of their models must be Gaussian. In general, systems are not linear, so linearization are performed on models that are already approximations of the world. In other cases, the noise to be controlled is not Gaussian, but it is approximated to that distribution in order to be able to deal with it. On the other hand, many systems are not Markovian, i.e., their states do not depend only on the previous state, but there are other dependencies that state space models cannot handle.
This thesis deals a collection of studies in which error is formulated and reduced. First, the error in a computer vision-based precision landing system is studied, then estimation and filtering problems from the deep learning approach are addressed. Finally, classification concepts with deep learning over trajectories are studied. The first case of the collection xviiistudies
the consequences of error propagation in a machine vision-based precision landing system. This paper proposes a set of strategies to reduce the impact on the guidance system, and ultimately reduce the error. The next two studies approach the estimation and filtering problem from the deep learning approach, where error is a function to be minimized by learning. The last case of the collection deals with a trajectory classification problem with real data. This work completes the two main fields in deep learning, regression and classification, where the error is considered as a probability function of class membership.Los vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV) en sus versiones de pequeño tamaño conocidos como drones, van tomando protagonismo en las sociedades actuales. Los sistemas que los componen presentan multitud de retos entre los cuales el error se puede considerar como el denominador común. La percepción del entorno se mide mediante sensores que tienen error, los modelos que interpretan la información y/o definen comportamientos son aproximaciones del mundo y por consiguiente también presentan error. Explicar el error permite extender los límites de los modelos deterministas para abordar problemas del mundo real. El rendimiento de las tecnologías embarcadas en los drones, dependen de nuestra capacidad de comprender, modelar y controlar el error de los sistemas que los integran, así como de las nuevas tecnologías que puedan surgir.
Los controladores de vuelo integran diferentes subsistemas los cuales generalmente son dependientes de otros sistemas. Un caso de esta situación son los sistemas de guiado. Estos sistemas son los encargados de proporcionar al controlador de los motores información necesaria para cumplir con una misión deseada. Para ello se componen de una ley de control de guiado que reacciona a la información percibida por los sistemas de percepción y navegación. El error de cualquiera de estos sistemas se propaga por el ecosistema del controlador siendo vital su estudio.
Por otro lado, entre las estrategias para abordar el control del error se encuentran los estimadores en espacios de estados, donde el filtro de Kalman desde su aparición en los años 60, ha sido y continúa siendo un gran aliado para los ingenieros. Los filtros de Kalman son el corazón de los sistemas de fusión de información, los cuales minimizan la covarianza del error del sistema, permitiendo filtrar los estados medidos y estimarlos cuando no se tienen observaciones. Los modelos de espacios de estados se desarrollan en base a un conjunto de hipótesis para modelar el mundo. Entre las hipótesis se encuentra que los modelos del mundo han de ser lineales, markovianos y que el error de sus modelos ha de ser gaussiano. Generalmente los sistemas no son lineales por lo que se realizan linealizaciones sobre modelos que a su vez ya son aproximaciones del mundo. En otros casos el ruido que se desea controlar no es gaussiano, pero se aproxima a esta distribución para poder abordarlo. Por otro lado, multitud de sistemas no son markovianos, es decir, sus estados no solo dependen del estado anterior, sino que existen otras dependencias que los modelos de espacio de estados no son capaces de abordar. Esta tesis aborda un compendio de estudios sobre los que se formula y reduce el error. En primer lugar, se estudia el error en un sistema de aterrizaje de precisión basado en visión por computador. Después se plantean problemas de estimación y filtrado desde la aproximación del aprendizaje profundo. Por último, se estudian los conceptos de clasificación con aprendizaje profundo sobre trayectorias. El primer caso del compendio estudia las consecuencias de la propagación del error de un sistema de aterrizaje de precisión basado en visión artificial. En este trabajo se propone un conjunto de estrategias para reducir el impacto sobre el sistema de guiado, y en última instancia reducir el error. Los siguientes dos estudios abordan el problema de estimación y filtrado desde la perspectiva del aprendizaje profundo, donde el error es una función que minimizar mediante aprendizaje. El último caso del compendio aborda un problema de clasificación de trayectorias con datos reales. Navigation of a compartmentalized robot system
After making progression in developing the fundamental problems related to single-robot control,
many researchers swerved and diverged their focus to studying multi-robot coordination. This
research aims to take the motion planning and control (MPC) problem of a multi-robot system
into a new space by considering a compartmentalized robot. An efficient variant of globally
rigid formation, in which multiple car-like units are adjoint and move in parallel without
collisions. The motion is governed by one of the sub-units acting as a leader, while other
units maintain the fixed distance amongst each other and the leader in a rigid formation.
The minimum distance technique is an important input to facilitate collision avoidance, robot
decision making, and robot navigation. In this study a novel method to analytically compute
the minimum distance between the closest point on the line segments of rectangular protective
region and the obstacle is presented. Utilizing the Lyapunov-based Control Scheme a set of
autonomous controllers are designed. Computer simulations of the proposed Lyapunov-based
controllers for the compartmentalized robot are presented in interesting scenarios to show the
efficacy of the unique set of controllers. In these simulations, the compartmentalized robot
shows strict maintenance of a rigid formation with efficient collision and obstacle avoidance. The
results open up research in the design and implementation of controllers by considering multiple
compartmentalized robots into swarm models, splitting and re-joining units, and applying
rotational leadership ideas
Synthesis of Hybrid Fuzzy Logic Law for Stable Control of Magnetic Levitation System
In this paper, we present a method to design a hybrid fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for a magnetic levitation system (MLS) based on the linear feedforward control method combined with FLC. MLS has many applications in industry, transportation, but the system is strongly nonlinear and unstable at equilibrium. The fast response linear control law ensures that the ball is kept at the desired point, but does not remain stable at that point in the presence of noise or deviation from the desired position. The controller that combines linear feedforward control and FLC is designed to ensure ball stability and increase the system's fast-response when deviating from equilibrium and improve control quality. Simulation results in the presence of noise show that the proposed control law has a fast and stable effect on external noise. The advantages of the proposed controller are shown through the comparison results with conventional PID and FLC control laws
Detection and Isolation of Faults and Cyberattacks in Nonlinear Cyber-Physical Systems using Neural Networks
The theory of Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) has applications in critical infrastructures such as smart grids, manufacturing systems, transportation systems, and autonomous systems such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs). In the CPS, there is a coordination between communication, computation, and control. The communication link in CPS can be subjected to malicious cyberattacks. On the other hand, the physical system in CPS can be faced with different faults such as sensor, actuator, and component faults. Therefore, two significant and challenging problems in CPS can be the detection of faults and cyberattacks. These two threats are intrinsically distinctive and need different strategies to deal with when they occur. This research mainly focuses on providing a methodology to detect and isolate faults and cyberattacks.
This work considers false data injection and replay attacks as security threats. Two different adaptive neural network-based detection methods are proposed in this thesis. These adaptive neural networks are able to detect, isolate, and estimate false data injection, and replay attacks.
Another contribution of this thesis is to provide a scheme for isolating faults and cyberattacks (false data injection and replay attacks) by using virtual sensors on the plant side, which makes the simultaneous detection of faults and false data injection cyberattacks possible.
A nonlinear model of a quadrotor is considered the case study, and the performance of the neural network-based schemes is evaluated through various numerical simulation scenarios
