    On the Impact of Information Technologies on Society: an Historical Perspective through the Game of Chess

    The game of chess as always been viewed as an iconic representation of intellectual prowess. Since the very beginning of computer science, the challenge of being able to program a computer capable of playing chess and beating humans has been alive and used both as a mark to measure hardware/software progresses and as an ongoing programming challenge leading to numerous discoveries. In the early days of computer science it was a topic for specialists. But as computers were democratized, and the strength of chess engines began to increase, chess players started to appropriate to themselves these new tools. We show how these interactions between the world of chess and information technologies have been herald of broader social impacts of information technologies. The game of chess, and more broadly the world of chess (chess players, literature, computer softwares and websites dedicated to chess, etc.), turns out to be a surprisingly and particularly sharp indicator of the changes induced in our everyday life by the information technologies. Moreover, in the same way that chess is a modelization of war that captures the raw features of strategic thinking, chess world can be seen as small society making the study of the information technologies impact easier to analyze and to grasp

    Using Technology to Enhance Pre-Service Teacher Preparation

    Use of the internet to deliver a portion of the content in an introductory science, education, and technology methods course for pre-service teachers provides an opportunity for a much needed introduction to basic computer literacy. A web page was developed for use in conjunction with the math, science, and technology educational methods courses at Brooklyn College. Students are introduced to this page as a group in the computer lab, and work in small groups with more experienced students serving as mentors to other students. The Brooklyn College Science Education Webpage is designed as a simple jump page with links to various resources for science education. It serves as a starting point to expose pre-service teachers to a wide range of resources available to them on the world wide web and in the real world. Students use their internet research skills in open-ended assignments throughout the semester. The web page continues to serve as a resource for students in the next courses in the math and science education sequence. The Brooklyn College Science Education Webpage helps education graduates to begin their teaching better prepared to use technology in the classroom

    Twenty years of "Lipid World": a fertile partnership with David Deamer

    "The Lipid World" was published in 2001, stemming from a highly effective collaboration with David Deamer during a sabbatical year 20 years ago at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. The present review paper highlights the benefits of this scientific interaction and assesses the impact of the lipid world paper on the present understanding of the possible roles of amphiphiles and their assemblies in the origin of life. The lipid world is defined as a putative stage in the progression towards life's origin, during which diverse amphiphiles or other spontaneously aggregating small molecules could have concurrently played multiple key roles, including compartment formation, the appearance of mutually catalytic networks, molecular information processing, and the rise of collective self-reproduction and compositional inheritance. This review brings back into a broader perspective some key points originally made in the lipid world paper, stressing the distinction between the widely accepted role of lipids in forming compartments and their expanded capacities as delineated above. In the light of recent advancements, we discussed the topical relevance of the lipid worldview as an alternative to broadly accepted scenarios, and the need for further experimental and computer-based validation of the feasibility and implications of the individual attributes of this point of view.     Using Spectral Radius Ratio for Node Degree to Analyze the Evolution of Scale Free Networks and Small World Networks

    In this paper, we show the evaluation of the spectral radius for node degree as the basis to analyze the variation in the node degrees during the evolution of scale-free networks and small-world networks. Spectral radius is the principal eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a network graph and spectral radius ratio for node degree is the ratio of the spectral radius and the average node degree. We observe a very high positive correlation between the spectral radius ratio for node degree and the coefficient of variation of node degree (ratio of the standard deviation of node degree and average node degree). We show how the spectral radius ratio for node degree can be used as the basis to tune the operating parameters of the evolution models for scale-free networks and small-world networks as well as evaluate the impact of the number of links added per node introduced during the evolution of a scale-free network and evaluate the impact of the probability of rewiring during the evolution of a small-world network from a regular network.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, Second International Conference on Computer Science and Information Technology, (COSIT-2015), Geneva, Switzerland, March 21-22, 201

    Theories for influencer identification in complex networks

    In social and biological systems, the structural heterogeneity of interaction networks gives rise to the emergence of a small set of influential nodes, or influencers, in a series of dynamical processes. Although much smaller than the entire network, these influencers were observed to be able to shape the collective dynamics of large populations in different contexts. As such, the successful identification of influencers should have profound implications in various real-world spreading dynamics such as viral marketing, epidemic outbreaks and cascading failure. In this chapter, we first summarize the centrality-based approach in finding single influencers in complex networks, and then discuss the more complicated problem of locating multiple influencers from a collective point of view. Progress rooted in collective influence theory, belief-propagation and computer science will be presented. Finally, we present some applications of influencer identification in diverse real-world systems, including online social platforms, scientific publication, brain networks and socioeconomic systems.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure

    Teaching Data Carving Using The Real World Problem of Text Message Extraction From Unstructured Mobile Device Data Dumps

    Data carving is a technique used in data recovery to isolate and extract files based on file content without any file system guidance. It is an important part of data recovery and digital forensics, but it is also useful in teaching computer science students about file structure and binary encoding of information especially within a digital forensics program. This work demonstrates how the authors teach data carving using a real world problem they encounter in digital forensics evidence processing involving the extracting of text messages from unstructured small device binary extractions. The authors have used this problem for instruction in digital forensics courses and in other computer science courses

    Using deterministic tourist walk as a small-world metric on Watts-Strogatz networks

    The Watts-Strogatz model (WS) has been demonstrated to effectively describe real-world networks due to its ability to reproduce the small-world properties commonly observed in a variety of systems, including social networks, computer networks, biochemical reactions, and neural networks. As the presence of small-world properties is a prevalent characteristic in many real-world networks, the measurement of "small-worldness" has become a crucial metric in the field of network science, leading to the development of various methods for its assessment over the past two decades. In contrast, the deterministic tourist walk (DTW) method has emerged as a prominent technique for texture analysis and network classification. In this paper, we propose the use of a modified version of the DTW method to classify networks into three categories: regular networks, random networks, and small-world networks. Additionally, we construct a small-world metric, denoted by the coefficient χ\chi, from the DTW method. Results indicate that the proposed method demonstrates excellent performance in the task of network classification, achieving over 90%90\% accuracy. Furthermore, the results obtained using the coefficient χ\chi on real-world networks provide evidence that the proposed method effectively serves as a satisfactory small-world metric.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
