Next Generation M2M Cellular Networks: Challenges and Practical Considerations
In this article, we present the major challenges of future machine-to-machine
(M2M) cellular networks such as spectrum scarcity problem, support for
low-power, low-cost, and numerous number of devices. As being an integral part
of the future Internet-of-Things (IoT), the true vision of M2M communications
cannot be reached with conventional solutions that are typically cost
inefficient. Cognitive radio concept has emerged to significantly tackle the
spectrum under-utilization or scarcity problem. Heterogeneous network model is
another alternative to relax the number of covered users. To this extent, we
present a complete fundamental understanding and engineering knowledge of
cognitive radios, heterogeneous network model, and power and cost challenges in
the context of future M2M cellular networks
Fly-By-Wireless for Next Generation Aircraft: Challenges and Potential solutions
”Fly-By-Wireless” paradigm based on wireless connectivity in aircraft has the potential to improve efficiency and flexibility, while reducing weight, fuel consumption and maintenance costs. In this paper, first, the opportunities and challenges for wireless technologies in safety-critical avionics context are discussed. Then, the assessment of such technologies versus avionics requirements is provided in order to select the most appropriate one for a wireless aircraft application. As a result, the design of a Wireless Avionics Network based on Ultra WideBand technology is investigated, considering the issues of determinism, reliability and security
State of the Art, Taxonomy, and Open Issues on Cognitive Radio Networks with NOMA
The explosive growth of mobile devices and the rapid increase of wideband
wireless services call for advanced communication techniques that can achieve
high spectral efficiency and meet the massive connectivity requirement.
Cognitive radio (CR) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are envisioned
to be important solutions for the fifth generation wireless networks.
Integrating NOMA techniques into CR networks (CRNs) has the tremendous
potential to improve spectral efficiency and increase the system capacity.
However, there are many technical challenges due to the severe interference
caused by using NOMA. Many efforts have been made to facilitate the application
of NOMA into CRNs and to investigate the performance of CRNs with NOMA. This
article aims to survey the latest research results along this direction. A
taxonomy is devised to categorize the literature based on operation paradigms,
enabling techniques, design objectives and optimization characteristics.
Moreover, the key challenges are outlined to provide guidelines for the domain
researchers and designers to realize CRNs with NOMA. Finally, the open issues
are discussed.Comment: This paper has been accepted by IEEE Wireless Communications

Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges
With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing
number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed
and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected.
Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime
satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency
and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base
stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks
using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services.
Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs.
Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient
maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated
electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS
sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications,
conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be
tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the
demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key
technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage,
and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an
environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to
be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and
atmosphere conditions, are also discussed
Identification of key research topics in 5G using co-word analysis
Project Work presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Knowledge Management and Business IntelligenceThe aim of this research is to better understand the field of 5G by analyzing the more than 10000 publications found in the Web of Science database. To achieve this, a co-word analysis was performed to identify research topics based on the author keywords and a strategic diagram was used to measure their level of maturity and relevance to the field. In total this analysis identified that all the articles can be grouped into seven topics, from which, two are mature but peripheral, one is both well developed and central to the field, and the rest are central, but underdeveloped. The value of this research, was the usage of a well-established technique that has been used in many fields, but never in the field of 5G which is growing in relevance
