The shift in the role of teachers in the learning process.

    Get PDF
Numerous studies have established that active participation in the learning process is more effective in a learning environment that emulates a real-world learning environment. In a traditional teaching and learning environment, only little learning is taking place in the classroom even though there appears to be an active shift of information. Studies have also clearly established that the role of the teacher alone is able to crush or nurture a student’s participation in the learning process. Hence, it is necessary to bring about a two-way transfer of knowledge between students and teachers as it requires optimum students’ participation. This paper brings into discussion the shift in the role of teachers in the learning process, from the traditional teaching and learning environment to a learning environment that encourages active students’ participation in the learning process. Respectively, this paper puts emphasis on the important role a teacher shoulders in shifting students from a passive role to an active role in a teaching and learning process. These characteristics of an effective teacher are grounded in the constructivism theory of learning, prior to which a brief description of the behaviorism and cognitivism theories is provided

In the context of globalization and explosion of knowledge, engineering practices have to make a shift from mere problem solving towards more innovative solutions embedded in an array of social, economic, cultural and ethical issues.  Innovation is a key differentiator in an increasingly global economy.  The role of our engineering schools in providing human capital, necessary to meet future national needs, new orientation. Today’s learners perceive learning as a “plug and play” experience.  They want to plunge in and learn through participation and experimentation. Traditional approaches emphasize the presentation of information and consider learning as mere absorption of information.  In contrast an effective student centered learning requires different perspectives from students and the teachers.  The lecture dominated system encourages a passive learning environment, a highly compartmentalized curriculum and instills neither motivation nor skills for lifelong learning.  It leaves no time for critical thinking, creative thinking and association with reality.  Students today are active learners.  The need of the hour is knowledge construction that can be achieved through active learning strategies like discussions, role play, group work, problem based learning, and project based learning.  Students’ engagement is seen as a successful indicator of classroom instruction. It depends on the level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences and a supportive learning environment.  This paper reports the various faculty training programmes organized in a university environment on the use of alternative learning approaches like discussions, role play and group work and its impact on students’ engagement. Global citizenship and the role of education in the twenty-first century

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to define concepts such as ‘citizenship’ and ‘global citizenship’ in a democracy and what it means to be ‘a good citizen’. It also seeks to explain that every individual can be ‘a good citizen’ in different situations and scenarios. Of the many agents responsible for the development of an individual, education, together with the home environment and culture, play an important part. Education is also the key to liberty and freedom, while the media is the key to accessing a wealth of information and knowledge. While referring to different modern-day scenarios and the positive and negative effects of globalization, one hopes to create or contribute to a dialogue, an inward and an outward dialogue, in order to understand further the role of education in the 21st century and the implications on active global democratic citizenship.peer-reviewe

Explaining semantic short-term memory deficits:evidence for the critical role of semantic control

    Get PDF
Patients with apparently selective short-term memory (STM) deficits for semantic information have played an important role in developing multi-store theories of STM and challenge the idea that verbal STM is supported by maintaining activation in the language system. We propose that semantic STM deficits are not as selective as previously thought and can occur as a result of mild disruption to semantic control processes, i.e., mechanisms that bias semantic processing towards task-relevant aspects of knowledge and away from irrelevant information. We tested three semantic STM patients with tasks that tapped four aspects of semantic control: (i) resolving ambiguity between word meanings, (ii) sensitivity to cues, (iii) ignoring irrelevant information and (iv) detecting weak semantic associations. All were impaired in conditions requiring more semantic control, irrespective of the STM demands of the task, suggesting a mild, but task-general, deficit in regulating semantic knowledge. This mild deficit has a disproportionate effect on STM tasks because they have high intrinsic control demands: in STM tasks, control is required to keep information active when it is no longer available in the environment and to manage competition between items held in memory simultaneously. By re-interpreting the core deficit in semantic STM patients in this way, we are able to explain their apparently selective impairment without the need for a specialised STM store. Instead, we argue that semantic STM patients occupy the mildest end of spectrum of semantic control disorders

Pengaruh Perkembangan Teknologi Terhadap Kurangnya Literasi Budaya Dan Kewarganegaraan Siswa SD

This article explores the impact of technological advances on elementary school students' cultural and civic knowledge. Even though it provides broad access to information, the negative impacts of technology such as social isolation and lack of direct interaction with cultural diversity make understanding cultural values and citizenship difficult. Reduced social engagement is also a challenge, limiting students' role as active citizens. The proposed solution involves collaboration between teachers, parents, and communities to create an educational environment that balances technology and hands-on experiences grounded in cultural and civic values. This article emphasizes the importance of preparing elementary school students to acquire strong cultural knowledge and a deep sense of citizenship, helping them become active and responsible members of society

Environment and participation of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: a multi-perspective study

    Get PDF
The influence of a person’s environment and its modifying potential on participation (at home, at school or in the community) is well recognized for most childhood disabilities, but scarcely studied for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim of this dissertation was to deepen the understanding of the role of environment on the participation of adolescents with ASD. Within a mixed method methodology, five consecutive studies were conducted. The empirical parts were performed in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Results highlight the importance of the parental and family environment and adolescents’ need for company during participation. They further point to the special role that information and knowledge play for adolescents with ASD, the effect of physical aspects of the environment, and adolescents’ need for motivation and nudges to connect and engage socially. Combatting negative attitudes is another important characteristic of an engaged, active, and supportive environment. The main role of environments is to make adolescents feel secure and help them to connect

Universities have a relevant and essential key role to ensure knowledge and development of competencies in the current fourth industrial revolution called Industry 4.0. The Industry 4.0 promotes a set of digital technologies to allow the convergence between the information technology and the operation technology towards smarter factories. Under such new framework, multiple initiatives are being carried out worldwide as response of such evolution, particularly, from the engineering education point of view. In this regard, this paper introduces the initiative that is being carried out at the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, called Industry 4.0 Technologies Laboratory, I4Tech Lab. The I4Tech laboratory represents a technological environment for the academic, research and industrial promotion of related technologies. First, in this work, some of the main aspects considered in the definition of the so called engineering education 4.0 are discussed. Next, the proposed laboratory architecture, objectives as well as considered technologies are explained. Finally, the basis of the proposed academic method supported by an active learning approach is presented.Postprint (published version
