This paper considers the origins of his ‘big ideas’ as he lived through the most amazing innovations in technology that have changed our lives more in a generation than in many centuries before. His vision continues as is exemplified by the collected papers in this tribute to his life and work

    Architectural building safety and health performance model for stratified low-cost housing: education and management tool for building managers

    The safety and health performances aspects of a building are the most challenging aspect of facility management. It requires a deep understanding by the building managers on the factors that contribute to health and safety performances. This study attempted to develop an explanatory architectural safety performance model for stratified low-cost housing in Malaysia. The proposed Building Safety and Health Performance (BSHP) model was tested empirically through a survey on 308 construction practitioners using partial least squares (PLS) and structural equation modelling (SEM) tool. Statistical analysis results supports the conclusion that architecture, building services, external environment, management approaches and maintenance management have positive influence on safety and health performance of stratified low-cost housing in Malaysia. The findings provide valuable insights for construction industry to introduce BSHP model in the future where the model could be used as a guideline for training purposes of managers and better planning and implementation of building management

    Preparing Secondary Mathematics Teachers: Focus on Modeling in Algebra

    This study addressed the opportunities to learn (OTL) modeling in algebra provided to secondary mathematics pre-service teachers (PSTs). To investigate these OTL, we interviewed five instructors of required mathematics and mathematics education courses that had the potential to include opportunities for PSTs to learn algebra at three universities. We also interviewed a group of three to four PSTs at each of the universities. We coded the interview transcripts using an analytic framework developed based on related literature and policy documents. We report the similarities and differences in perspectives among instructors and PSTs related to modeling at each university, along with comparisons of OTL across universities

    Improving The Understanding Of The Arithmetic Concept Through Realistic Mathematic Education (RME)

    This study aims to improve the arithmetic concept understanding of the second grade students of Percobaan 2 Yogyakarta elementary school through Realistic Mathematic Education (RME). This study was a classroom action research. This study was conducted in two cycles. The participants were the students and teacher of second grade (IIA) of Percobaan 2 Yogyakarta Elementary School. The data were collected by observation form, manual interview, and test. Observations were used to collect the data of the students’s activities in mathematics teaching and learning. The test was used to collect the data of the students’s arithmetic concept understanding. The results of the study show that RME improve the students’s arithmetic concept understanding of Percobaan 2 Yogyakarta Elementary School. There are the improvements of arithmetic concept understanding after doing mathematic teaching and learning through RME. The improvements are: (a) repeating a concept ability increases from 79.9798% to 84.3434%, (b) classifying objects according their characteristics increases from 70,9090% to 86.3636% , (c) giving the example and non-example ability increase from 94.8864% to 95.4545%, (d) presenting the concept in all of represented mathematics increases from 73.8634% to 89.3939%, (e) developing the sufficient and necessary condition ability of a concept increases from 46.9697% to 79.5454%, (f) Using and deciding a particular procedure increases from 71.9697% to 78.0303%, (g) aplying concept increases from 71.2121% to 78,7879%.     Living-learning communities improve first-year engineering student academic performance and retention at a small private university

    Living-Learning Communities (LLCs), in which students share a residence, one or more classes, and extracurricular activities, have been shown to improve first-year student engagement, academic performance, and retention in non-engineering fields. Research on Engineering LLCs has focused primarily on student engagement. Two studies to examine performance and retention found that LLCs had little effect on first-semester grades but increased first-year retention in engineering by 2 to 12%. Unfortunately, one of these studies did not control for differences in incoming student characteristics, and another used a comparison group that differed little from the LLC group, possibly causing them to understate the LLC’s true effects. To improve our understanding, this paper examines performance and retention in the inaugural Engineering LLCs at a small, private non-profit, regional university in the northeastern United States. Results indicate that 82% of the Engineering LLC participants were retained within the engineering program, compared to 66% of first-year engineering students who chose not to participate. More strikingly, the average first-semester GPA of the LLC participants was 0.31 points (nearly a third of a letter grade) higher than that of the non-participants. To address the possibility that these improvements were caused by differences in incoming student characteristics, linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to control for gender, race/ethnicity, SAT scores, and other factors. These analyses suggest that LLC participation increased GPA by 0.35 points compared to first-year engineering students from prior years, while non-participation lowered GPA by 0.07 points. LLC participation increased the odds of retention in the major by 2.3 times compared to first-year students from prior years, while nonparticipation lowered the odds of retention by 1.35 times

    (m,n)-Semirings and a Generalized Fault Tolerance Algebra of Systems

    We propose a new class of mathematical structures called (m,n)-semirings} (which generalize the usual semirings), and describe their basic properties. We also define partial ordering, and generalize the concepts of congruence, homomorphism, ideals, etc., for (m,n)-semirings. Following earlier work by Rao, we consider a system as made up of several components whose failures may cause it to fail, and represent the set of systems algebraically as an (m,n)-semiring. Based on the characteristics of these components we present a formalism to compare the fault tolerance behaviour of two systems using our framework of a partially ordered (m,n)-semiring.Comment: 26 pages; extension of arXiv:0907.3194v1 [math.GM
