Geometric lattice structure of covering-based rough sets through matroids
Covering-based rough set theory is a useful tool to deal with inexact,
uncertain or vague knowledge in information systems. Geometric lattice has
widely used in diverse fields, especially search algorithm design which plays
important role in covering reductions. In this paper, we construct four
geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets through matroids, and
compare their relationships. First, a geometric lattice structure of
covering-based rough sets is established through the transversal matroid
induced by the covering, and its characteristics including atoms, modular
elements and modular pairs are studied. We also construct a one-to-one
correspondence between this type of geometric lattices and transversal matroids
in the context of covering-based rough sets. Second, sufficient and necessary
conditions for three types of covering upper approximation operators to be
closure operators of matroids are presented. We exhibit three types of matroids
through closure axioms, and then obtain three geometric lattice structures of
covering-based rough sets. Third, these four geometric lattice structures are
compared. Some core concepts such as reducible elements in covering-based rough
sets are investigated with geometric lattices. In a word, this work points out
an interesting view, namely geometric lattice, to study covering-based rough
sets
Detection of compact objects by means of gravitational lensing in binary systems
We consider the gravitational magnification of light for binary systems
containing two compact objects: white dwarfs, a white dwarf and a neutron star
or a white dwarf and a black hole. Light curves of the flares of the white
dwarf caused by this effect were built in analytical approximations and by
means of numerical calculations. We estimate the probability of the detection
of these events in our Galaxy for different types of binaries and show that
gravitational lensing provides a tool for detecting such systems. We propose to
use the facilities of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to search for these
flares. It is possible to detect several dozens compact object pairs in such a
programme over 5 years. This programme is apparently the best way to detect
stellar mass black holes with open event horizons.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures; Accepted for publication in Astronomy &

A unified theory of granularity, vagueness and approximation
Abstract: We propose a view of vagueness as a semantic property of names and predicates. All entities are crisp, on this semantic view, but there are, for each vague name, multiple portions of reality that are equally good candidates for being its referent, and, for each vague predicate, multiple classes of objects that are equally good candidates for being its extension. We provide a new formulation of these ideas in terms of a theory of granular partitions. We show that this theory provides a general framework within which we can understand the relation between vague terms and concepts and the corresponding crisp portions of reality. We also sketch how it might be possible to formulate within this framework a theory of vagueness which dispenses with the notion of truth-value gaps and other artifacts of more
familiar approaches. Central to our approach is the idea that judgments about reality involve in every case (1) a separation of reality into foreground and background of attention and (2) the feature of granularity. On this basis we attempt to show that even vague judgments made in naturally occurring contexts are not marked by truth-value indeterminacy. We distinguish, in addition to crisp granular partitions, also vague partitions, and reference partitions, and we explain the role of the latter in the context of judgments that involve vagueness. We conclude by showing how reference partitions provide an effective means by which judging subjects are able to temper the vagueness of their judgments by means of approximations
