    How HRM affects corporate financial performance: Evidence from Belgian SMEs.

    In this paper, we provide a summary of several results from a study of HRM in small and medium-sized enterprises in Belgium. The central issue is whether the investment in HRM practices for smaller organizations is 'profitable'. This study differs in three ways from existing research. (1) It deals with the results from a survey of organizations with between 10 and 100 employees from various sectors. (2) In composing an index for 'HRM intensity', we started with a different interpretation of HRM practices, which also fits in more closely with the Belgian institutional context. (3) The operationalization of performance is based on a number of financial indicators which also help determine the 'state of health' of a company. Using the results of the survey, we examined the link between the score for HRM intensity, some performance outcomes and the financial performance of the organization using structural equation modeling. The results show that intensive HRM also offers added value for smaller organizations. Firstly, HRM intensification has a highly positive effect on productivity and, through productivity, reduces personnel costs/added value. This effect is sufficiently strong to compensate for the increased costs associated with intensive HRM. On top of this 'compensation effect', HRM intensity also has major effects on the profitability of the company.

    This paper compares and contrasts higher education with professional services firms. It considers what (if anything) leaders in higher education may gain from reflecting on how other sectors are evolving and the extent to which lessons can be learned by looking outwards. We structure the paper by outlining the world of PSFs, its many manifestations and some of the current challenges in Section 2. We then move on to compare and interpret one particular leadership framework we developed to understand PSFs, and use this to identify some potential questions for higher education leaders. Finally, we conclude by exploring how, in the light of some of the current drivers of change, our view of the higher education sector may evolve as a new ‘eco-system’ emerges

    Cost-benefit Analysis of a Genetic Marker on Cow-calf Operations Differentiated by Pasture and Breed

    Genetic sequencing in beef cattle (Bos taurus L.) is expected to aid producers with selecting breeding stock. Using data from experimental trials conducted with Angus, Brahman, and their reciprocal cross, the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) P450 C994G marker expression was investigated for use in selecting genetics suited to grazing endophyte-infected tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. L.) compared to bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) pasture. The study is unique in the sense that actual cow-calf breeding failure rates (open cows were not culled) were tracked from 1991 to 1997 on herds that were bred to calf in spring and were either exposed to fungal endophyte-infected (Acremonium coenophialum L.) tall fescue grazing and hay or not. The study used the Forage and Cattle Analysis and Planning (FORCAP) decision support software to assess economic performance driven by birth weight, weaning weight, and breeding failure rate differences across treatment. Results suggest that for reciprocal cross herds primarily grazing bermudagrass pastures, the P450 C994C genotype (CC) was most favorable; whereas, the P450 G994C genotype (GC) was more profitable with tall fescue. Adding genetic market information when selecting a production strategy led to approximately 15/headinaddedprofitability.Incomparisontotheproratedcostof15/head in added profitability. In comparison to the prorated cost of 2.40/head over the life of a dam, the collection, interpretation, and management of genetic information under the conditions observed in this study may be worthwhile

    This paper follows the report on the “Quality of Urban Design: Study of the Influence of Private Property Decision Maker in Urban Design” (RICS 1996). It focuses on one of the findings in the report, namely that decisions made in development, investment and occupation seemed overly influenced by short term considerations. In this paper, the authors review the Report and examine the concept of short termism as it affects urban design decisions. The paper concludes that although it is difficult to establish whether or not short termism exists in many decisions, there are grounds for believing that a priori short termism might particularly influence property orientated decisions. The paper ends with some implications for policy both at the economy and local level

    [Excerpt] Human Resources as a function is not broadly recognized for the significant role that it plays in the development and execution of corporate business strategy because, in many cases, it plays more of a facilitator role than a director role. In order to increase the credence given to HR on the macro level, practitioners need to play a more active role in the promotion of HR as a career. The approach to increase brand equity on a micro level should include HR practitioners on a more local level having a strong presence in the local community. Giving people a clearer idea of what HR is and what it can actually do, not only to add value to the company but also to make employees outside of HR more effective, will lead to an across-the-board increase in the respect given to HR practitioners
