    Proactive project scheduling in an R&D department: a bi-objective genetic algorithm

    In this paper, we present part of a study on stochastic, dynamic project scheduling in an R&D Department of a leading home appliances company in Turkey. The problem under consideration is the preemptive resource constrained multi-project scheduling problem with generalized precedence relations in a stochastic and dynamic environment. The model consists of three phases. Phase I of the model provides a systematic approach to assess uncertainty resulting in activity deviation distributions. In Phase II, proactive project scheduling is accomplished through two different scheduling approaches,which employ a bi-objective genetic algorithm. Phase III is the reactive project scheduling phase aiming at rescheduling the disrupted project activities. Here, we will limit our presentation to Phase II – the proactive project scheduling phase. The procedure is demonstrated through an implementation with real data covering 37 R&D projects. Computational study is performed to compare the two different scheduling approaches called single and multi-project scheduling approaches, as well as two different chromosome evaluation heuristics.     A survey of variants and extensions of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem

    The resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) consists of activities that must be scheduled subject to precedence and resource constraints such that the makespan is minimized. It has become a well-known standard problem in the context of project scheduling which has attracted numerous researchers who developed both exact and heuristic scheduling procedures. However, it is a rather basic model with assumptions that are too restrictive for many practical applications. Consequently, various extensions of the basic RCPSP have been developed. This paper gives an overview over these extensions. The extensions are classified according to the structure of the RCPSP. We summarize generalizations of the activity concept, of the precedence relations and of the resource constraints. Alternative objectives and approaches for scheduling multiple projects are discussed as well. In addition to popular variants and extensions such as multiple modes, minimal and maximal time lags, and net present value-based objectives, the paper also provides a survey of many less known concepts. --project scheduling,modeling,resource constraints,temporal constraints,networks

    A three-phase approach for robust project scheduling: an application for R&D project scheduling

    During project execution, especially in a multi-project environment unforeseen events arise that disrupt the project process resulting in deviations of project plans and budgets due to missed due dates and deadlines, resource idleness, higher work-in-process inventory and increased system nervousness. In this thesis, we consider the preemptive resource constrained multi-project scheduling problem with generalized precedence relations in a stochastic and dynamic environment and develop a three-phase model incorporating data mining and project scheduling techniques to schedule the R&D projects of a leading home appliances company in Turkey. In Phase I, models classifying the projects with respect to their resource usage deviation levels and an activity deviation assignment procedure are developed using data mining techniques. Phase II, proactive project scheduling phase, proposes two scheduling approaches using a bi-objective genetic algorithm (GA). The objectives of the bi-objective GA are the minimization of the overall completion time of projects and the minimization of the total sum of absolute deviations for starting times for possible realizations leading to solution robust baseline schedules. Phase II uses the output of the first phase to generate a set of non-dominated solutions. Phase III, called the reactive phase, revises the baseline schedule when a disruptive event occurs and enables the project managers to make “what-if analysis” and thus to generate a set of contingency plans for better preparation

    Scheduling and rescheduling with iterative repair

    This paper describes the GERRY scheduling and rescheduling system being applied to coordinate Space Shuttle Ground Processing. The system uses constraint-based iterative repair, a technique that starts with a complete but possibly flawed schedule and iteratively improves it by using constraint knowledge within repair heuristics. In this paper we explore the tradeoff between the informedness and the computational cost of several repair heuristics. We show empirically that some knowledge can greatly improve the convergence speed of a repair-based system, but that too much knowledge, such as the knowledge embodied within the MIN-CONFLICTS lookahead heuristic, can overwhelm a system and result in degraded performance

    Project management under uncertainty: a study on solution methods

    Project Management involves onetime endeavors that demand for getting it right the first time. On the other hand, project scheduling, being one of the most modeled project management process stages, still faces a wide gap from theory to practice. Demanding computational models and their consequent call for simplification, divert the implementation of such models in project management tools from the actual day to day project management process. Special focus is being made to the robustness of the generated project schedules facing the omnipresence of uncertainty. An "easy" way out is to add, more or less cleverly calculated, time buffers that always result in project duration increase and correspondingly, in cost. A better approach to deal with uncertainty seems to be to explore slack that might be present in a given project schedule, a fortiori when a non-optimal schedule is used. The combination of such approach to recent advances in modeling resource allocation and scheduling techniques to cope with the increasing flexibility in resources, as can be expressed in "Flexible Resource Constraint Project Scheduling Problem" (FRCPSP) formulations, should be a promising line of research to generate more adequate project management tools. In reality, this approach has been frequently used, by project managers in an ad-hoc way

    An equitable approach to the payment scheduling problem in project management

    This study reports on a new approach to the payment scheduling problem. In this approach, the amount and timing of the payments made by the client and received by the contractor are determined so as to achieve an equitable solution. An equitable solution is defined as one where both the contractor and the client deviate from their respective ideal solutions by an equal percentage. The ideal solutions for the contractor and the client result from having a lump sum payment at the start and end of the project respectively. A double loop genetic algorithm is proposed to solve for an equitable solution. The outer loop represents the client and the inner loop the contractor. The inner loop corresponds to a multi-mode resource constrained project scheduling problem with the objective of maximizing the contractor's net present value for a given payment distribution. When searching for an equitable solution, information flows between the outer and inner loops regarding the payment distribution over the event nodes and the timing of these payments. An example problem is solved and analyzed. A set of 93 problems from the literature are solved and some computational results are reported
