Visual-hint Boundary to Segment Algorithm for Image Segmentation
Image segmentation has been a very active research topic in image analysis
area. Currently, most of the image segmentation algorithms are designed based
on the idea that images are partitioned into a set of regions preserving
homogeneous intra-regions and inhomogeneous inter-regions. However, human
visual intuition does not always follow this pattern. A new image segmentation
method named Visual-Hint Boundary to Segment (VHBS) is introduced, which is
more consistent with human perceptions. VHBS abides by two visual hint rules
based on human perceptions: (i) the global scale boundaries tend to be the real
boundaries of the objects; (ii) two adjacent regions with quite different
colors or textures tend to result in the real boundaries between them. It has
been demonstrated by experiments that, compared with traditional image
segmentation method, VHBS has better performance and also preserves higher
computational efficiency.Comment: 45 page
Wavelets, ridgelets and curvelets on the sphere
We present in this paper new multiscale transforms on the sphere, namely the
isotropic undecimated wavelet transform, the pyramidal wavelet transform, the
ridgelet transform and the curvelet transform. All of these transforms can be
inverted i.e. we can exactly reconstruct the original data from its
coefficients in either representation. Several applications are described. We
show how these transforms can be used in denoising and especially in a Combined
Filtering Method, which uses both the wavelet and the curvelet transforms, thus
benefiting from the advantages of both transforms. An application to component
separation from multichannel data mapped to the sphere is also described in

Poisson multi-Bernoulli conjugate prior for multiple extended object filtering
This paper presents a Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) conjugate prior
for multiple extended object filtering. A Poisson point process is used to
describe the existence of yet undetected targets, while a multi-Bernoulli
mixture describes the distribution of the targets that have been detected. The
prediction and update equations are presented for the standard transition
density and measurement likelihood. Both the prediction and the update preserve
the PMBM form of the density, and in this sense the PMBM density is a conjugate
prior. However, the unknown data associations lead to an intractably large
number of terms in the PMBM density, and approximations are necessary for
tractability. A gamma Gaussian inverse Wishart implementation is presented,
along with methods to handle the data association problem. A simulation study
shows that the extended target PMBM filter performs well in comparison to the
extended target d-GLMB and LMB filters. An experiment with Lidar data
illustrates the benefit of tracking both detected and undetected targets
The identification of cellular automata
Although cellular automata have been widely studied as a class of the spatio temporal systems, very few investigators have studied how to identify the CA rules given observations of the patterns. A solution using a polynomial realization to describe the CA rule is reviewed in the present study based on the application of an orthogonal least squares algorithm. Three new neighbourhood detection methods are then reviewed as important preliminary analysis procedures to reduce the complexity of the estimation. The identification of excitable media is discussed using simulation examples and real data sets and a new method for the identification of

Symmetry sensitivities of Derivative-of-Gaussian filters
We consider the measurement of image structure using linear filters, in particular derivative-of-Gaussian (DtG) filters, which are an important model of V1 simple cells and widely used in computer vision, and whether such measurements can determine local image symmetry. We show that even a single linear filter can be sensitive to a symmetry, in the sense that specific responses of the filter can rule it out. We state and prove a necessary and sufficient, readily computable, criterion for filter symmetry-sensitivity. We use it to show that the six filters in a second order DtG family have patterns of joint sensitivity which are distinct for 12 different classes of symmetry. This rich symmetry-sensitivity adds to the properties that make DtG filters well-suited for probing local image structure, and provides a set of landmark responses suitable to be the foundation of a nonarbitrary system of feature categories
