On Binary Matroid Minors and Applications to Data Storage over Small Fields
Locally repairable codes for distributed storage systems have gained a lot of
interest recently, and various constructions can be found in the literature.
However, most of the constructions result in either large field sizes and hence
too high computational complexity for practical implementation, or in low rates
translating into waste of the available storage space. In this paper we address
this issue by developing theory towards code existence and design over a given
field. This is done via exploiting recently established connections between
linear locally repairable codes and matroids, and using matroid-theoretic
characterisations of linearity over small fields. In particular, nonexistence
can be shown by finding certain forbidden uniform minors within the lattice of
cyclic flats. It is shown that the lattice of cyclic flats of binary matroids
have additional structure that significantly restricts the possible locality
properties of -linear storage codes. Moreover, a collection of
criteria for detecting uniform minors from the lattice of cyclic flats of a
given matroid is given, which is interesting in its own right.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
Results on Binary Linear Codes With Minimum Distance 8 and 10
All codes with minimum distance 8 and codimension up to 14 and all codes with
minimum distance 10 and codimension up to 18 are classified. Nonexistence of
codes with parameters [33,18,8] and [33,14,10] is proved. This leads to 8 new
exact bounds for binary linear codes. Primarily two algorithms considering the
dual codes are used, namely extension of dual codes with a proper coordinate,
and a fast algorithm for finding a maximum clique in a graph, which is modified
to find a maximum set of vectors with the right dependency structure.Comment: Submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, May 2010 To

Distance-regular graphs
This is a survey of distance-regular graphs. We present an introduction to
distance-regular graphs for the reader who is unfamiliar with the subject, and
then give an overview of some developments in the area of distance-regular
graphs since the monograph 'BCN' [Brouwer, A.E., Cohen, A.M., Neumaier, A.,
Distance-Regular Graphs, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1989] was written.Comment: 156 page
Quantum Stabilizer Codes and Classical Linear Codes
We show that within any quantum stabilizer code there lurks a classical
binary linear code with similar error-correcting capabilities, thereby
demonstrating new connections between quantum codes and classical codes. Using
this result -- which applies to degenerate as well as nondegenerate codes --
previously established necessary conditions for classical linear codes can be
easily translated into necessary conditions for quantum stabilizer codes.
Examples of specific consequences are: for a quantum channel subject to a
delta-fraction of errors, the best asymptotic capacity attainable by any
stabilizer code cannot exceed H(1/2 + sqrt(2*delta*(1-2*delta))); and, for the
depolarizing channel with fidelity parameter delta, the best asymptotic
capacity attainable by any stabilizer code cannot exceed 1-H(delta).Comment: 17 pages, ReVTeX, with two figure
Coding Theory and Algebraic Combinatorics
This chapter introduces and elaborates on the fruitful interplay of coding
theory and algebraic combinatorics, with most of the focus on the interaction
of codes with combinatorial designs, finite geometries, simple groups, sphere
packings, kissing numbers, lattices, and association schemes. In particular,
special interest is devoted to the relationship between codes and combinatorial
designs. We describe and recapitulate important results in the development of
the state of the art. In addition, we give illustrative examples and
constructions, and highlight recent advances. Finally, we provide a collection
of significant open problems and challenges concerning future research.Comment: 33 pages; handbook chapter, to appear in: "Selected Topics in

50 Years of the Golomb--Welch Conjecture
Since 1968, when the Golomb--Welch conjecture was raised, it has become the
main motive power behind the progress in the area of the perfect Lee codes.
Although there is a vast literature on the topic and it is widely believed to
be true, this conjecture is far from being solved. In this paper, we provide a
survey of papers on the Golomb--Welch conjecture. Further, new results on
Golomb--Welch conjecture dealing with perfect Lee codes of large radii are
presented. Algebraic ways of tackling the conjecture in the future are
discussed as well. Finally, a brief survey of research inspired by the
conjecture is given.Comment: 28 pages, 2 figure
