The logistics implications of emerging business models
The network structure has expanded the nature of organisational economics from a limited perspective, based upon economies of scale (within which the firm became volume oriented striving to achieve its minimum cost/volume position on its long-run average cost curve (Chandler: 1962), to a âcollectiveâ perspective based upon a notion of dispersed operations (i e, the complete range of value creation, production, delivery and service provision). It is no longer sufficient to be the lowest cost provider in a market but rather it is now essential to be the most effective and efficient solution provider: end-user markets are product-service dominated. These may be PRODUCT-service markets, however in the New Economy many industrial markets are product-SERVICE markets: the customers are aware of product application performance but are often more influenced by service-maintenance availability rather low prices, hence the approach by major manufacturers of such products as aero-engines which are priced by the hour of serviceable use. To be effective it is essential that suppliers and customers understand each otherâs expectations (value drivers) and costs (value driver response costs). The complexities of markets encourage a network approach, one in which âsolutionsâ to customersâ âproblemsâ may take on a PRODUCT-service format or (increasingly) a product-SERVICE offer and the solutions will cross a number of international borders as well as a number of intra and inter-organisational boundaries during the process
Innovative Tokyo
This paper compares and contrasts Tokyo's innovation structure with the industrial districts model and the international hub model in the literature on urban and regional development. The Tokyo model embraces and yet transcends both industrial districts and international hub models. The paper details key elements making up the Tokyo model-organizational knowledge creation, integral and co-location systems of corporate R&D and new product development, test markets, industrial districts and clusters, participative consumer culture, continuous learning from abroad, local government policies, the national system of innovation, and the historical genesis of Tokyo in Japan's political economy. The paper finds that the Tokyo model of innovation will continue to evolve with the changing external environment, but fundamentally retains its main characteristics. Smart Manufacturing Technology Adoption for Improving Productivity: A Systematic Literature Review
This paper is to present a review of the Smart manufacturing application as Industry 4.0, specifically on the conceptual approaches to define it. Two conceptual approaches to the application of the concept of smart manufacturing are distinguished. The method using the previous articles of scientific journals from 2017-2022 (thirty-two international paper) were selected based on previous works, with the scope to investigate and analyze in-depth the extent to which literature used to discuss results in the selected studies of applying the Smart Manufacturing Technology in manufacture enterprises. The results of the previous studies are discussed and investigated in a table format

This document is the first deliverable of CHOICE project task 2.2 Bringing together European and Chinese Industrial Associations. This task will, at the end of the second year of the project, have delivered a final version of an online database of relevant Chinese and European ICT industrial associations. This document is a report on the progress towards an online database of relevant Chinese and European ICT industrial associations. It maps Chinese industrial associations to European industrial associations in ICT. It does this by providing details of the Chinese industrial associations and other relevant bodies that are a Chinese priority for collaboration with their EU counterparts related to EU-China collaborative ICT R&D&I. Other such Chinese bodies that are not a Chinese priority for such collaboration that map to European industrial associations in ICT are then summarised so that a complete mapping of Chinese industrial associations and related bodies to European industrial associations in ICT can be made
Late Innovation Strategies in Asian Electronics Industries: A Conceptual Framework and Illustrative Evidence
This paper was published in Oxford Development Studies special issue in honor of the late Professor Linsu Kim. The paper reviews evidence on the evolution of electronics design in Asia's leading electronics exporting countries, to establish what capabilities have been developed, and to shed light on the forces that are driving "late innovation" strategies. It also reviews intellectual sources that can be used to theoretically ground these hypotheses. Using a well-known taxonomy of innovation that distinguishes incremental, modular, architectural and radical innovations, and the concept of "disruptive technologies", I argue that Asian firms may have realistic chances to engage in incremental innovations as well as in architectural innovations. However, to sustain "late innovation" strategies over a longer period, "complex system integration" capabilities are necessary to provide the missing link.

This document is a deliverable of CHOICE project task 2.2 Bringing together European and Chinese Industrial Associations. This task will, at the end of the project, have delivered a final version of an online database of relevant Chinese and European ICT industrial associations. This document is a report on the information gathered for the development of the online database of relevant Chinese and European ICT industrial associations. It maps Chinese industrial associations to European industrial associations in ICT. It does this by providing details of the Chinese industrial associations and other relevant bodies that are a Chinese priority for collaboration with their EU counterparts related to EU-China collaborative ICT R&D&I. Other such Chinese bodies that are not a Chinese priority for such collaboration that map to European industrial associations in ICT are then summarised so that a complete mapping of Chinese industrial associations and related bodies to European industrial associations in ICT can be made. Mappings are made based on the best matches in terms of the subject matter covered by the associations, in each case the best match based on this criteria is identified and highlighted by being given in bold type. If a mapped Chinese association is not a priority for collaboration it is identified in italics. The Chinese selection of Chinese bodies that are a priority for collaboration with EU counterparts reflects the relevant policy guidance provided on behalf of the Chinese government on how the aims of the "Twelfth Five-Year" National Strategic Emerging Industry Development Plan are to be achieved. An overview of the policy guidance relevant to ICT R&D&I is given in section one of CHOICE deliverable D2.4: Handbook for China ICT Industrial Support Services. Based on this mapping opportunities to foster interaction between the associations in China and Europe are identified. A DVD of the modest database that exists on the basis of the mapping presented in this report accompanies the report
