Use of a Laser Scanning System for Professional Preparation and Scene Assessment of Fire Rescue Units

    Get PDF
The paper presents results of a study focused on usability of a 3D laser scanning system by fire rescue units during emergencies, respectively during preparations for inspection and tactical exercises. The first part of the study focuses on an applicability of a 3D scanner in relation to an accurate evaluation of a fire scene through digitization and creation of virtual walk-through of the fire scene. The second part deals with detailed documentation of access road to the place of intervention, including a simulation of the fire vehicle arrival

Valuing the Attributes of Freight Transport Quality: Results of the Stated Preference Survey

    Get PDF
This paper presents the results of a survey of fifty firms transporting ten commodity groups, using an interactive stated preference game to obtain values of the rate reduction necessary to compensate for longer transit times, poorer reliability and the use of intermodal systems. Generally, the pattern of results is as expected, with the quality of the transport service being less important for low value products in industries with high levels of stockholding, and vice versa. Quality requirements are also generally less stringent when products are moving to depots than to customers. In a critique of the method, some reservations are expressed both about the reliability of the results, andabout the high cost and time of the survey method. Nevertheless, we conclude that overall the approach has worked reasonably well, and yielded much valuable data; we know of no alternative method which could have yielded quantitative valuations in these circumstances

A Hybrid MCDM Approach to Transshipment Port Selection

Port selection is an intrinsic supply-chain problem that has substantial impact on development of local economies. Shipping business environment developed into complex system where decision making is derived from uncertain and incomplete data. In this study we present a conceptual integrated Multi-Criteria Decision solution to transshipment port selection problem based on Best-Worst MCDM and Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm. Through literature review and expert analysis, 50 relevant criteria have been identified as relevant to the transshipment port selection problem. Decision makers within liner shipping companies evaluate transshipment port selection criteria and establish ranking that is used to determine crisp solution with lowest consistency ratio. ABC based algorithm is used to reduce computational complexity and deliver a single optimal solution by solving both objective and constraint violation functions

The Hong Kong parking demand study

    Get PDF
This paper describes the objectives, methodology, findings, recommendations and implementation programme of a parking demand study which was conducted in Hong Kong during the period 1993-1995. The study comprises extensive surveys to establish parking characteristics and parking inventory, a stated preference survey to estimate the influence of parking space availability on modal choice, development of parking demand models for private cars and goods vehicles, identification of problems related to parking, and formulation of remedial measures.published_or_final_versio

A Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm for the Vehicle Routing with Time Windows and Loading Problem

    Get PDF
This work presents the Vehicle Routing with Time Windows and Loading Problem (VRTWLP) as a multi-objective optimization problem, implemented within a Genetic Algorithm. Specifically, the three dimensions of the problem to be optimized – the number of vehicles, the total travel distance and volume utilization – are considered to be separated dimensions of a multi-objective space. The quality of the solution obtained using this approach is evaluated and compared with results of other heuristic approaches previously developed by the author. The most significant contribution of this work is our interpretation of VRTWLP as a Multi-objective Optimization Problem
