    On Rearrangement of Items Stored in Stacks

    There are n2n \ge 2 stacks, each filled with dd items, and one empty stack. Every stack has capacity d>0d > 0. A robot arm, in one stack operation (step), may pop one item from the top of a non-empty stack and subsequently push it onto a stack not at capacity. In a {\em labeled} problem, all ndnd items are distinguishable and are initially randomly scattered in the nn stacks. The items must be rearranged using pop-and-pushs so that in the end, the kthk^{\rm th} stack holds items (k1)d+1,,kd(k-1)d +1, \ldots, kd, in that order, from the top to the bottom for all 1kn1 \le k \le n. In an {\em unlabeled} problem, the ndnd items are of nn types of dd each. The goal is to rearrange items so that items of type kk are located in the kthk^{\rm th} stack for all 1kn1 \le k \le n. In carrying out the rearrangement, a natural question is to find the least number of required pop-and-pushes. Our main contributions are: (1) an algorithm for restoring the order of n2n^2 items stored in an n×nn \times n table using only 2n2n column and row permutations, and its generalization, and (2) an algorithm with a guaranteed upper bound of O(nd)O(nd) steps for solving both versions of the stack rearrangement problem when dcnd \le \lceil cn \rceil for arbitrary fixed positive number cc. In terms of the required number of steps, the labeled and unlabeled version have lower bounds Ω(nd+ndlogdlogn)\Omega(nd + nd{\frac{\log d}{\log n}}) and Ω(nd)\Omega(nd), respectively

    Multi-Scale Hierarchical Conditional Random Field for Railway Electrification Scene Classification Using Mobile Laser Scanning Data

    With the recent rapid development of high-speed railway in many countries, precise inspection for railway electrification systems has become more significant to ensure safe railway operation. However, this time-consuming manual inspection is not satisfactory for the high-demanding inspection task, thus a safe, fast and automatic inspection method is required. With LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data becoming more available, the accurate railway electrification scene understanding using LiDAR data becomes feasible towards automatic 3D precise inspection. This thesis presents a supervised learning method to classify railway electrification objects from Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) data. First, a multi-range Conditional Random Field (CRF), which characterizes not only labeling homogeneity at a short range, but also the layout compatibility between different objects at a middle range in the probabilistic graphical model is implemented and tested. Then, this multi-range CRF model will be extended and improved into a hierarchical CRF model to consider multi-scale layout compatibility at full range. The proposed method is evaluated on a dataset collected in Korea with complex railway electrification systems environment. The experiment shows the effectiveness of proposed model

    Three dimensional perception is essential to the development of versatile robotics systems in order to handle complex manufacturing tasks in future factories and in providing high accuracy measurements needed in flexible manufacturing and quality control. A program is described which will develop the potential of Moire techniques to provide this capability in vision systems and automated measurements, and demonstrate artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to take advantage of the strengths of Moire sensing. Moire techniques provide a means of optically manipulating the complex visual data in a three dimensional scene into a form which can be easily and quickly analyzed by computers. This type of optical data manipulation provides high productivity through integrated automation, producing a high quality product while reducing computer and mechanical manipulation requirements and thereby the cost and time of production. This nondestructive evaluation is developed to be able to make full field range measurement and three dimensional scene analysis

    Planning manipulation movements of a dual-arm system considering obstacle removing

    The paper deals with the problem of planning movements of two hand-arm robotic systems, considering the possibility of using the robot hands to remove potential obstacles in order to obtain a free access to grasp a desired object. The approach is based on a variation of a Probabilistic Road Map that does not rule out the samples implying collisions with removable objects but instead classifies them according to the collided obstacle(s), and allows the search of free paths with the indication of which objects must be removed from the work-space to make the path actually valid; we call it Probabilistic Road Map with Obstacles (PRMwO). The proposed system includes a task assignment system that distributes the task among the robots, using for that purpose a precedence graph built from the results of the PRMwO.     Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age

    Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications, and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees, active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and Is SLAM solved

    The discrete dynamics of small-scale spatial events: agent-based models of mobility in carnivals and street parades

    Small-scale spatial events are situations in which elements or objects vary in such away that temporal dynamics is intrinsic to their representation and explanation. Someof the clearest examples involve local movement from conventional traffic modelingto disaster evacuation where congestion, crowding, panic, and related safety issue arekey features of such events. We propose that such events can be simulated using newvariants of pedestrian model, which embody ideas about how behavior emerges fromthe accumulated interactions between small-scale objects. We present a model inwhich the event space is first explored by agents using ?swarm intelligence?. Armedwith information about the space, agents then move in an unobstructed fashion to theevent. Congestion and problems over safety are then resolved through introducingcontrols in an iterative fashion and rerunning the model until a ?safe solution? isreached. The model has been developed to simulate the effect of changing the route ofthe Notting Hill Carnival, an annual event held in west central London over 2 days inAugust each year. One of the key issues in using such simulation is how the processof modeling interacts with those who manage and control the event. As such, thischanges the nature of the modeling problem from one where control and optimizationis external to the model to one where this is intrinsic to the simulation
