The Operational Process Dashboard for Manufacturing
AbstractAgility is a critical success factor for manufacturers in today's volatile global environment and requires employees monitoring their performance and reacting quickly to turbulences. Thus, comprehensive information provisioning on all hierarchy levels is neces- sary. Yet, existing IT systems, e. g., Manufacturing Execution Systems, scarcely address information needs of workers on the shop floor level. This causes uncoordinated waiting times, inflexibility and costly communication. To address these issues, we present the Operational Process Dashboard for Manufacturing (OPDM), a mobile dashboard for shop floor workers. We identify process- oriented information needs, develop technical dashboard services and define IT requirements for an implementation
Mobile Glaucoma Detection Application
Glaucoma is a debilitating optical degeneration disease that can lead to vision loss and eventually blindness. Given its asymptomatic nature, most people with Glaucoma aren’t even aware that they have the disease. As a result, the disease is often left untreated until it is too late. Detecting the presence of Glaucoma is one of the most important steps in treating Glaucoma, but is unfortunately also the most difficult to enforce. The Mobile Glaucoma Detection application aims to reduce the growing number of individuals who are unaware that they have Glaucoma by providing a simple detection mechanism to notify users if they are at risk. The system does this by enabling its users to independently conduct Tonometry exams through the application. Tonometry examinations allow doctors to determine if the intra-ocular pressure levels in a person’s eyes put them at risk for Glaucoma. The M.G.D.A(Mobile Glaucoma Detection Application) allows users to determine their intra-ocular pressure levels from the comfort of their own home via a special contact lens paired with a smartphone application. The system also offers users the opportunity to monitor, regulate, and track their use and progress through the system
Dashboard indicators for the Northeast Ohio economy: prepared for the Fund for Our Economic Future
The Fund for Our Economic Future (The Fund) is a multiyear collaborative effort “to encourage and advance a common and highly focused regional economic development agenda that can lead to a long-term economic transformation of the Northeast Ohio (NEO) economy.” One of the strategies pursued by the Fund is to create and regularly update Dashboard Indicators for the Northeast Ohio Regional Economy. The Dashboard is intended to provide a framework for understanding the regional economic process and to track the region’s economic progress. This report presents the methodology used to construct and design the dashboard. The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland is publishing this paper as part of our working paper series in order to further academic discussion of regional economic growth factors.Regional economics ; Economic development ; Economic conditions - Ohio

Digital Systems Teaching and Research (DSTR) Robot: A Flexible Platform for Education and Applied Research
The DSTR (pronounced “Disaster”) robot has a strong history of being adaptable to different user’s needs, and there are many opportunities ahead that indicate that the sky, quite literally, is not the limit for this robust platform. This paper provides a historical perspective on the development of the DSTR robot as a collaborative design developed by the Mobile Integrated Solutions Laboratory (MISL) at Texas A&M University and ASEP 4X4 Inc. Texas Instruments has been a major partner in the integration of the control electronics, and Texas Space Technology Applications and Research (T STAR) LLC has played a significant role in the propagation of the DSTR robot as an adaptable applied research/education/STEM outreach platform. The paper will present examples of the strong industry-academic relationships that allow the DSTR robot to be utilized in a multitude of experiential learning environments. In addition to a number of STEM outreach activities, the DSTR robots are being used in the Introduction to Engineering course at Blinn College and in the Freshman Engineering curriculum at Texas A&M University. DSTRs have also been selected by NASA scientists as a low-cost lunar sample collector. The paper will also discuss the newly developed DSTR-E (DSTR Engineering) unit which requires students to perform several engineering tasks during the build process. The paper will also include the lessons learned from initial design through its transfer to the private sector for commercialization and future plans.Cockrell School of Engineerin
An Analysis and Design of Mobile Business Intelligence System for Productivity Measurement and Evaluation in Tire Curing Production Line
AbstractBusiness intelligence (BI) system as an architecture of competencies, processes, technologies, applications and practices to support productivity measurement. It obviously needs a BI that support organization to declare any production constraints that currently or already occurred in such as tire curing industry. Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is used as a quantitative productivity measurement and become the base of company continuous improvement and evaluation. The objectives of this study are to identify critical parameters of production line in effectiveness measurement and machine utilization, analyze the requirement of information system as an Android based mobile BI System and to integrate the design into a mobile system. System requirement analyzed each interdependent measure in the real world of complexity by using BPMN 2.0. These measures are part of dashboard components in the proposed BI. The acquired data from a National forefront tire industry shows the OEE in three ratio measurement of availability, performance, and quality with 78%, 82.5% and 99.8% of scorecard respectively. In order to determine the status of production, the deployment of k-nearest neighbour (k-NN) gives 67.5% of accuracy rate. The critical parameters identification results to 8 (eight) significant constraints, which calculated using distance-based RELIEF attribute selection. Eventually this approach results big four constraints to be noted: (a) mold repair, (b) mold setting, (c) green tire shortage and (d) defect cure
Cloud service-oriented dashboard for work cell management in RFID-enabled ubiquitous manufacturing
This article aims at developing a service-oriented dashboard for operators and supervisors of manufacturing shopfloor work-cells to realize information visibility and traceability effectively with cloud and RFID (radio frequency identification) technologies. The work is based on a case of an illustrative assembly line consisting of a number of work cells. The dashboard is deployed for facilitating assembly operations in ubiquitous manufacturing environment. The utilization of the system leads to significant improvements in work cell productivity and quality, operational flexibility and decision efficiency. © 2013 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Immigrants and Billion Dollar Startups
Immigrants play a key role in creating new, fast-growing companies, as evidenced by the prevalence of foreignborn founders and key personnel in the nation's leading privately-held companies. Immigrants have started more than half (44 of 87) of America's startup companies valued at 168 billion, which is close to half the value of the stock markets of Russia or Mexico. The research involved conducting interviews and gathering information on the 87 U.S. startup companies valued at over 1 billion or more and have received venture capital (equity) financing
