Technical, Allocative, and Economic Efficiency in Swedish Dairy Farms: The Data Envelopment Analysis Versus the Stochastic Frontier Approach
Technical, allocative, and economic input efficiency scores were estimated for an unbalanced panel of Swedish dairy farms, using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the stochastic frontier approach (SFA). By comparing the results it was concluded that when the entire dairy farm is studied the DEA is more appropriate to use since it does not require any particular parametric form to be chosen. The average DEA technical, allocative and economic efficiency indices were eventually found to be 0.77, 0.57, and 0.43 respectively. The influence of size on the efficiency scores was analyzed and significant evidence indicating a positive relationship between size and efficiency was found. Fatores determinantes da eficiĂȘncia do setor bancĂĄrio em Portugal: uma aplicação atravĂ©s de modelos de regressĂŁo fracional
The participation in the Euro area and the current financial crisis substantially conditioned the development of the Portuguese banking industry, for which is expected a continuous fall in income and a growing competitive pressure, improving the need to look carefully to issues as efficiency as an essential survival factor. Efficiency indicators of the main banks operating in Portugal were measured through DEA methodology. The application of two-stage models allowed circumventing the usual problems inherent to the coexistence of the production and intermediation approaches. The application of regression for proportions, more appropriate than traditional linear and Tobit regressions, to deal with the fractional nature of the DEA scores, allowed the identification of efficiency determinant factors for the main banks operating in Portugal. The fractional regression models demonstrate evidence of improved specification comparing to traditional regression models. The variables that appear to major influence on overall efficiency are internationalization, size and type of ownership of capital.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Incorporating Both Undesirable Outputs and Uncontrollable Variables into DEA: the Performance of Chinese Coal-Fired Power Plants
There are two difficulties in doing an objective evaluation of the performance of decision-making units (DMUs). The first one is how to treat undesirable outputs jointly produced with the desirable outputs, and the second one is how to treat uncontrollable variables, which often capture the impact of the operating environment. Given difficulties in both model construction and data availability, very few published papers simultaneously consider the above two problems. This article attempts to do so by proposing six DEA-based performance evaluation models based on a research sample of the Chinese coal-fired power plants. Measuring efficiency with neural networks. An application to the public sector
In this note we propose the artificial neural networks for measuring efficiency as a complementary tool to the common techniques of the efficiency literature. In the application to the public sector we find that the neural network allows to conclude more robust results to rank decision-making units.DEA
Estimating Vessel Efficiency Using a Bootstrapped Data Envelopment Analysis Model
Technical efficiency, which measures how well a firm transforms inputs into outputs, gives fishery managers important information concerning the economic status of the fishing fleet and how regulations may be impacting vessel profitability. Data envelopment analysis (DEA), and the stochastic production frontier (SPF) have emerged as preferred methods to estimate efficiency in fisheries. Although each of the approaches has strengths and weaknesses, DEA has often been criticized because it is "deterministic" and fails to account for noise in the data. This paper presents a method for examining the underlying statistical structure of DEA models using bootstrap methods and readily available software. The approach is then applied to a case study of the U.S. mid-Atlantic sea scallop dredge fleet. Measuring efficiency of Tunisian schools in the presence of quasi-fixed inputs: A bootstrap data envelopment analysis approach
The objective of this paper is to measure the efficiency of high schools in Tunisia. We use a statistical Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)-bootstrap approach with quasi-fixed inputs to estimate the precision of our measure. To do so, we developed a statistical model serving as the foundation of the Data Generation Process (DGP). The DGP is constructed such that we can implement both smooth homogeneous and heterogeneous bootstrap methods. Bootstrap simulations were used to estimate and correct the bias, and to construct confidence intervals for the efficiency measures. The simulation results show that the efficiency measures are subject to sampling variations. The adjusted measure reveals that high schools with residence services would have to give up less than 12.1 percent of their resources on average to be efficient.Educational economics; Efficiency; Productivity; Data Envelopment Analysis; Bootstrap; Quasi-fixed inputs
A Comparative Analysis of the Efficiency of Romanian Banks
In this paper, we analyze the efficiency of the main banks in Romania, the Czech Republic and Hungary for the period 2000-2006, by using the frontier analysis. For the estimation of efficiency of banking we used a nonparametric method â the DEA Method (Data Envelopment Analysis) and a parametric method - the SFA Method (Stochastic Frontier Analysis). The results of the analyses show that the banks in the three East-European countries reach low levels of technical efficiency and cost efficiency, especially the ones in Romania, and that the main factors influencing the level of banks efficiency in these countries are: quality of assets; bank size, annual inflation rate; banking reform and interest rate liberalisation level and form of ownership.efficiency, banking, DEA method, SFA method
